Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Three "Can't Let It Go"
Super short and to-the-point reviews. Sorry shadows - only got so much time in a day. Vom Vorton - I've been waiting for this song. Thank you for not writing about cats or boat contests. Strength: personality, hooks Weakness: some pitchiness, mastering The Alleviators - This is very nice. The story ...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"
I’m almost too embarrassed to share my realization that it’s a Song Fight song. Surely, you never heard Melvin’s Love Me a Little Bit More. Quite a lot of similarity when you put the surface aesthetics aside.

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"
Speaking of borrowed compositions, what does Stacking Theory remind me of this round? I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure it out.

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Two "Floating In the Water"
The intention is to give perspective from at least two different time periods significantly apart and weave them into a coherent song. Whether it’s fictional or not doesn’t matter so long as you aren’t so off-the-rails that it’s not recognizable as being different time periods. The original suggesti...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"
Welp, this is one of those rounds where as soon as I start listening to everyone else's songs, I immediately kick myself for not googling the most basic thing - how to fucken pronounce deified. I just assumed it was DAY-ified with a long "a" (like it is in Latin - Deus Ex Machina), but ha...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"
No ABBCBBA (7 notes, 3 tones)? I guess that's too similar to just being ABCBA. I’d give that a strong “depends” how well it’s done. If it feels like ABCBA with an awkward addition that doesn’t really belong there, not a huge fan. That said, I won’t be strongly indexing on the challenge as a penalty.

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"
I can’t speak for the other judges. I will accept any phrase that contains at least 3 distinct tones and is at least 6 notes in total length. In other words, I think the minimum phrases follow the forms ABCCBA (6 notes, 3 tones), ABCDCBA (7 notes, 4 tones), ABACABA (7 notes, 3 tones).

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"
I’ll also be pretty liberal in my judging, so don’t toss out whatever you were doing. Just saying, I’ll judge harder if it’s obviously part of another phrase. Because then I don’t consider it a phrase in and of itself, which means it doesn’t follow the text of the challenge “palindromic musical phra...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"
Any instrument or track. However, I will be looking for a complete phrase. For example: an 8 beat melody with 6 notes palindromic and 2 completing the phrase does *not* qualify.
Edit: removed the use of “measure”

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Zero "Friday the 13th"
At the risk of pissing everyone off, I figure I owe you all some thoughts. I listened to the songs multiple times and had different front-runners at different times. The things I looked for were: * execution - technically how well you composed, performed, engineered, produced * concept - how well th...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"
This pairing, in retrospect, screams Gregorian chant to me. To be clear, Gregorian chant should be chanted - not screamed.

C4D929B2-364C-436A-BAB7-4E406F948367.gif Yawn. If I’d known you didn’t know what you wanted I might have had time to make a better song. Instead, I bugged the heck out of Cybronica for her educated opinion on music theory. I knew I would get panned for only having 2 hours to record. I considered no...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Five "The Only Way Out"
However, you establish the key of C and then go up to Gm in both chords and melody. That's an upward modulation in my book. When you bike up and down a hill, and someone asks “did you bike down that hill?” do you say “no! I only biked up!”? I don’t really anticipate making it through this round for...

Re: Nur Ein XVI - The Only Way Out
Challenge: My verse is in C and my chorus is in Gm. The transition back to C involves Adim -> D7 -> C. Which is downward. I hope you didn’t mean to specify something else that isn’t a technical definition of modulation! Verse After years of repeating the same mistakes You’re convinced there is no es...

Thanks, judges, furrypedro, Tommy G, and everyone else who's shared their reaction to this song. I had no idea it would catch on. My wife has been singing "NEIN! WE ROW!" all week. At first I was going to do some lame Penny Lane inspired song and toss in some foreign lyrics - probably Fren...
