Re: Ancient Chinese Curse (Interesting Times reviews)
Hey Irwin! I see that you repeated a couple of reviews for people, and left some others out. Maybe a cut and paste error, or something? Not complaining, just pointing it out in case you missed it. Ergh. Probably. I edit offline and then copy in. I'll go back and try to re-paste. Thanks, I probably ...

Re: Drums or Pedals
So here's my recommendation for a blank check in a music store: forget the guitar multi-effects and the drum kit and pick up a decent microphone or two. Guitar multi-effects units are fun for practice and general wankery (and there's certainly a place for that), but it's often hard to get useful sou...

Re: Ancient Chinese Curse (Interesting Times reviews)
OK, let's try that again... Adam Dachis Drums feel stiff and robotic. Ends suddenly, I wanted it to keep going! Vocals sound good, and I like the Yaz-esque synth line. Berkeley Social Scene Jazz oddesey! I like the changing sections. Mix feels too wide, at least on headphones. Perhaps pan the guitar...

Re: Drums or Pedals
Although I doubt that this: http://guitargeek.com/rigview/476/ ..is what Tony Iommi was using in the 70s, which is probably what most people mean when they think "I want to sound like Sabbath". No, but this one is probably correct: http://guitargeek.com/rigview/495/ Jesus. I think I went ...

Re: Drums or Pedals
Well hell, you've got a blank-ish check. From what you've said, your primary noise-maker is the guitar so... Research time, yo. Think of the guitarist(s) whose sound you not only dig, but would like to sound like (at least for now). Go to the websites of the guitar magazines and search for articles...

Neither got much love in the votes or on the boards at the time, but I have always liked the Lunkhead tracks More Than Soup and Dirty Chucks.

What does it mean to "beat Gyruss", anyway?

Re: Drum Overheads
I've been looking into anew pair of overheads, and I was considering the Shure SM-81 vs. the Rode NT5 vs the Oktava MK-12.
Anyone have opinions on the relative merits of those?
I'd want something that functions reasonably well in a stereo pair on an acoustic guitar as well.

Re: Drunken ebaying.
Anyone used the BBE gear? Is it any good? There's a sonic maximizer sitting idle in my rack right now. For a while I'd strap it across the bus for final mixdown and think "Yeah this is awesome!" Then I started doing one mix with it in the loop and one without and A/B-ing them later and fo...

Re: real synths
Anybody else out there using real hardware synths? I've got a couple of Casio CZ-series synths that I fire up from time to time. In fact, my CZ-3000 can be heard doing a pad and solo in the Narcaloungers' Wedding Song. I agree, there's something about playing the Real Deal vs. a software simulation.

Indeed, a lot depends on what your use pattern is. For reference, I do most of my recording nowadays on a G4 Powerbook with 1G of RAM. For what I do, that is more than enough, though I tend to be more of the real instrument/microphone/multitrack kind of guy and less the super-duper plugin and softwa...

Anti-M I like the vocal effect in the verse. Perhaps just in contrast, but the vocals in the chorus sound flat. End is a little abrubt. Good song. B. Ellison Nicely done. The accordian in the chorus is a nice touch. The bridge sounds a little chaotic and discordant, which I suppose could be intentio...
