Re: SpinTunes 18 Final Round: One-Two Punch

I know we all got a little upset and appreciated the harsher redactions, but I'm certainly not holding a grudge and I'd be surprised if anybody else was either. I think the reviews came from a good (and probably excited) place and I'd rather look back five weeks and say "fuck, Jim was right ab...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Final Round: One-Two Punch

when I dig into its substance, I come away feeling much less satisfied. The main thing that pulls me out of it is the lack of a POV. I get it. The intention is to be simple and I’m sure this song is about something because the emotions are there, but it feels like it’s designed to cast a super wide...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Final Round: One-Two Punch

Since I'm in the final round I'm only discussing the shadows. How will people deal with this challenge? and how was I going to approach it myself? I had all kinds of thoughts about it over the past week, and was super curious to hear the entries. First, I was thinking there would be some Working Cla...

Hey everybody, listened to everything. Lots of interesting things that this cruel, cruel challenge brought forth! If you are interested in any feedback, PM me and happy to go into however much detail you are interested in. Thanks for the fun hour!

Re: Spin Tunes 18 Round 3 - Tell Me What You Want

Jim of Seattle: Ow, I can hear so much hiss when your vocal tracks come in/out. Whether it's bus, room, or some kind of compression artefact, you gotta tame that. Or! You could lay a track of that hiss under the entire song, so that it's not as noticeable when vocals come in and out (fade your head...

Wow! As for what you're showing me, yeah that looks like a recipe for vocal issues. But beyond that, your EQ plugin is way more sophisticated looking than mine. I don't know if I'm jealous or relieved. Some of both.

Re: Spin Tunes 18 Round 3 - Tell Me What You Want

Jim of Seattle- I’m not One of Them - Jim you’re a Song Fight legend. You’re one of my favorite artists in these communities. This sounds professional, because you are a professional. I keep you to a higher standard, and this delivers. This is great. This is not my wheelhouse, not my favorite genre...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

But both the lead and the secondary vocalist have that same pinched quality to them, so the overall sonic experience of the song in the aggregate is akin to a fire alarm. So the whole song is this hot electric color, and it's grating after not very long at all. The drastic EQ on the vocals further ...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

Also, an interesting comment made by Owl in the podcast at around minute 41, regarding specificity of lyrics. I think you probably mean the section around 1:02 where we’re discussing The Dutch Widows? Oh. Yeah. That's weird. Paused podcast Looked at time marker said 41:00 Yet.... going back now it ...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

Pitch correction -- I've got Nectar and it always sounds very obviously badly horribly fake and artificial. I think I have some kind of melodyne license with my DAW. Maybe I'll try it. Part of the issue I'm having right now is that Spintunes is once again falling primary during the eight or so week...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

There are a lot of Tims Hinkle online who are not me, so when I put out an album in 2019 I was thinking that I should differentiate myself from the rest of that enormous bunch. I didn't have a band name I was really happy with so I wound up using my full name. Of course, even though it brings the n...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

OK, I think I'm coming across... let me start over. OK, I REALIZE I'm coming across here more judgmental than I mean to. Note to self. Specifically, in the podcast it was mentioned that I would want to disqualify songs for being borderline challenge-appropriate, and I realize that the light-hearted ...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

So hey everyobdy, I realize this forum isn't very well attended, but I just wanted to get a few things off my chest. After Brother Baker's take down of my review, I felt really badly, and so this morning I had to go back and tone them down a few notches. So if I gave you a nasty review, I'm sorry, a...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

I think you can make your criticism more constructive. Yeah, we didn't have enough time to perfect a song this round, and yes I agree the mix isn't up to the normal caliber (there is a lot of fuzz in the guitars). That is good feedback, but this review just sounds like a general distaste for a genr...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

Jim, Feel free to not subject yourself to my music for the remainder of Spintunes. I'm releasing us both. LOL, never gonna happen. Hope springs eternal. And while I didn't love Violet Lies either, it certainly doesn't assault my ears. Maybe the solution is for me to try harder to call out the goodn...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

(funny thing is my round one song has a ton of tempo changes - every section has one - I put them in there as it's something I've been experimenting a lot with lately, trying to do subtle tempo changes from section to section to create more energy.) Yeah, you know I have heard of that, never tried ...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

OK, here's the rest of them. Man, a whole lot of yelling over fuzz guitars this round. Huh... Timothy Patrick Hinkle - A Lost Love and a Roving Eye This song feels long. I say that because I'm not sure what you're talking about most of the time, so I'm kept at this far distance. This causes your tem...

SpinTunes 18 Round 2 Challenge: 'Escape the Grid'

First chunk, more to come. Daniel Sitler - Work in Progress I enjoyed your use of the challenge in service to the manic depressive theme. That was a great idea, and you mostly realized it. I didn't get the idea of you being in a manic state until you got to the slow down part. This might have been m...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 1 Challenge 'Color Me Impressed'

I mean the guitar is floaty too, just not in tempo. Maybe we define floaty differently? Anyway, I have a mind bursting with ideas for round #2, and some of that will be undeniably floatier. These are floaty to me https://open.spotify.com/track/1kAD3OQeKWZoT3oNj5bKLx?si=5c4b876cf7cc4812 https://open...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 1 Challenge 'Color Me Impressed'

it's in free time until you get to the chorus which is indeed in 4/4. If you follow the hand drums, they're super stop/start. The idea was to create an "impressionist" effect where the song is just kind of floating along (see what I did there...it's about painting...impressionism...) . Li...

Re: SpinTunes 18 Round 1 Challenge 'Color Me Impressed'

Hey all, some meta regarding my reviews. I like to go on, I know. I tend to rewrite people's songs, I know. They always say when reviewing, "don't rewrite their song, just give impressions", and I've spent years trying to do that. I'm giving up. Official apologies to the Universe of Music ...
