Re: Modern democracy (was: COVID-19 freakout thread)
When a president parts a sea of peaceful protesters with brute force so he can pose in front of a church holding a Bible, a tone of melodrama has already been struck; incredulous horror is the normal reaction. If your Constitution can put a stop to this obvious descent into fascism, good for it. So ...

Re: Modern democracy (was: COVID-19 freakout thread)
[edited for clarity] I think I get it. The election process involves the interminable Primaries, where the Republicans and Democrats decide who they will offer as President; and then the big election on Nov 4th, where people choose who they want to be President, among other things. To vote for a can...

Re: Modern democracy (was: COVID-19 freakout thread)
We can register as a Republican/Democrat/third party, and vote. . . Canadian here. This "registering as a Republican or Democrat"(or other -- that's news to me) is something I've never understood. In Canada, if you're a citizen, the government mails you a card around election time and you...

Re: Near enough to perfect... (Bent Straight reviews)
what is the instrument that kicks in at 1:45? That's the Flute patch from a Yamaha CP-40 Stage Piano. Played straight, it sounds a lot like a real flute. Played the way I did, it sounds like the Mellotron the Beatles used on Strawberry Fields. By using the 4/4 beat over a 6/8 backing, I hope I adde...

Mythical Creature -- James Owens They say to the North is a devious tribe Where the people do nothing but steal from the rich And the leaders tell lies to control what you think And the good are abandoned to die in the ditch Safer to stay home, my friend Safer to stay home They say to the East is a ...

I may update the site Sunday night, so, all y'all stragglers should aim closer to the deadline this time if you can. I am scheduled to have some dental surgery Monday that will have me laid up for a few days, so, I'll need to take care of the update before that so it doesn't sit around for days. I ...

Re: Near enough to perfect... (Bent Straight reviews)
As I wrote the reviews for Lichen Throat and Hot Pink Halo, I began wondering why I was more forgiving of Lichen Throat's pitchiness. Lichen Throat's work has always reminded me of an old friend, a genuinely engaged, highly creative person with a strange, somewhat alienating approach or style, and f...

Re: Near enough to perfect... (Bent Straight reviews)
It’s super interesting to me to hear how other people go about writing their lyrics. My approach is to think about the prompt for a while until I settle on an idea (in this case bending light > gravity > general relativity), then I choose a structure and write to it in no particular order. I'll gen...

Re: Lying just under the surface of (Uncharted Waters reviews)
James Owens : The melody works well here even if it reminds me of something very particular that I can't quite put my finger on. Not Fade Away, maybe? (I'm thinking of the Rolling Stones cover). As far as I know, it's kind of a general-purpose Bo Diddley riff, freely used for this kind of thing.

Re: Lying just under the surface of (Uncharted Waters reviews)
Some songs in this fight remind me of Procol Harum's "A Salty Dog": 'All hands on deck! We've run afloat!' I heard the captain cry. . . Amby Moho - Some very liquid sounds in this highly textured song, although the initial rhythm feels like riding a terrestrial animal. The fast tremolo is ...

Bent Straight You've been lying for so long now You don't even know what's true Everything is going wrong now And it's all coming down, down to you All you have is a hammer All you see are nails All you do is try to fix things And all you do is fail With all of your strength With all of your art You...

Uncharted Waters - James Owens I tried something new today Tuned my guitar in a whole new way Read all about it on the Internet And then sat down to see what I'd get Made up some chords without a chart I figured they would be a start Then I thought with three guitars I could take this kinda far Tune...

Re: Worse than nothing is not (Better Than Everything reviews)
Maybe earnest isn't the right word. The emotion felt overdone to me — like one of those overwrought 80s tunes. It didn't feel like you were actually emotional, just trying to sound emotional. If I could butt in here, "too earnest" was also used to describe the Mandibles entry for Love in ...

Re: We're really in (Uncharted Waters prefight)
A while back, furrypedro suggested I try open tuning, so this seems like the moment. I've tuned three guitars different ways, and now I'm messing around, but without any chord charts to guide me. (You can guess why.) I've also scrawled some meta lyrics about the whole thing, so with luck I'll have s...

Re: Worse than nothing is not (Better Than Everything reviews)
I haven't read any reviews of the other songs yet (of course I've read the reviews of mine). Not only that, I haven't proofread the following. I'll get around to that. These reviews were written over several days, in various states of consciousness. -- Amby Moho - It starts deceptively as synth-pop,...
