Fuckin. I mean, I love my job.. I like what I do generally, and the Air Force has given me a lot.. but fuck. I work anywhere between 9-14 hours a day, without lunch. I also work weekends and holidays virtually without exception. I know that being in the media and doing any kind of journalism/reporting type job will result in these kinds of hours, but god damn as the bottom-of-the-totem-pole enlisted peon, this shit is fucking taxing.

It's a Thursday night. I just got off an 11-hour day, because I said fuck it and left some shit undone. I have to be at work in 8 hours to prepare for the fuckin wing commander to come in and do live tv/radio for an hour. I do twice as much prep work as anyone else to make this a possibility, but only the radio dj interviewing him gets kudos.

Straight up, I am the best broadcaster the Department of Defense has in the Pacific, if not the world. There are emails coming from our HQ that say so. But I'll be god damned if that shit does me a bit of good. I could put out shit-ass product and leave work at 4pm every day, but that's not me.

Fuck. I don't know what I'm trying to say. I needed somewhere to vent, and I'm hammered, alone in my room, on a weeknight. I guess this thread makes sense. How do people deal with being ridiculously exemplary performers and no one giving a shit? It's not like I'm some back-room, behind-the-scenes guy, my shit gets played on the Pentagon channel every fucking day. I have less than six months of experience at this, and I'm a god damn genius. It doesn't mean shit, what the fuck am I doing?

Patience. If you're as good as you say you are, your seniority will catch up to your merit eventually.

(That is, assuming no one in your chain of command knows about your Songfightin' alter-ego and happens to see this rant...)

Yeah, basically sounds like how things were for me at the game company, and later at Amazon. I think it's how jobs tend to go, really. If it really bothers you (and it sounds like it does), talk to your supervisor about how you feel. It can do wonders.

Some thoughts:
- You love what you do. Stop complaining, based on that alone. It's all too rare and simply priceless to be able to do what you love.
- You're good but you're new. You're not seasoned. A year of experience? Still an infant in any industry. Entry level. Need some perspective? I worked for Time Inc. 10 years. I'd say I averaged 10 hour days, with months at a time pulling 10-16 hour days. The past 10 years I've been traveling about 50% of the time, I'm away from my family during those periods, and work really long hours with lots of pressure, jet lag and interrupted hobbies.
- You're always learning. You think it's "work" but it's really the best paid education you can get. When you find you're in a job that doesn't challenge you to learn constantly, that's ok, but you have other priorities and the job isn't all that important anymore.
- You're paying your dues. You're not a news desk director, nor bureau chief. Unless I'm missing something.
- Jon is correct, you don't "get" recognition, it comes to you. Often in unexpected ways, and with unexpected opportunities. If you're waiting for a slap on the back you're likely to be disappointed, dis-spirited, and soon unhappy. You said you love what you do and you work hard at it. That's the formula for success, so let it work its magic. Having said that, there are situations where you're obviously on someone's shit list and it's not your fault at all. That's not a reflection of your work, it's a reflection of how much of a dick that person is. And it's a sign that you need to move on.

I was not drunk when I wrote this, but I was drunk last night, FWIW.

Wow, I was fdrink. More than I've been in a while.

However, that wasn't a typo. Just something I probably wouldn't have brought up if I'd been sober. Since you asked, however...

My wife and I have what you might call an open marriage. (If you're fluent in hippy, you'd say that we practice polyamory.) We love each other, live together and have no intention of separating, but we also believe that this commitment should not exclude us from being able to pursue relationships with other people. She had a boyfriend for about a year and a half, and they broke up recently, which inspired my "Hardly a Moment." As for me, I've been dating another woman for about two months. Everyone involved knows about everyone else and is fully concentual in the arrangement.

So, uh... Surprise!

That's pretty common these days, actually. I know lots of people in open relationships and I'm kinda-sorta part of one myself. This generation, I tells ya.

Of course the guy from San Francisco gets it!

I've been going back and forth on whether or not to "come out" to my fellow Songfighters for a long time. It was particularly awkward when I was in SF with you guys and I kept getting texts from my girlfriend, whom I'd only been seeing for like a week at that point.

Oh well, I guess you're just most honest when you're drunk.
