If I recall correctly, someone here participated in the experiment Franck describes in this NYT article. It was years ago so I'm not going to dig through the archives to make sure. Anyone else remember a "rate the indie songs and pass along to your friends" website? I remember noticing that the front page looked a lot like a psychology experiment subject release form.
Anyhow, it looks like they found that if you're lucky enough to be rated highly by the first few people who hear it, your chance of success is much much higher than if the first few listeners don't like it. Social feedback amplifies initial conditions. Like an egg balanced on a rooftop: it's the tiny fluctuations will determine which way it ultimately falls.
