Mobile Internet

Postby Dan-O from Five-O » Tue Jul 15, 2008 10:18 pm

It's late, I'm tired and not looking to see if this has been addressed before. Sorry, call me a lazy ass. Anyway, I just got a Samsung Blackjack through work and of course the first thing I checked out was the Internet function. What I have found is that some sights support this, and A LOT don't including my work (how goofy is that?). I can still access the sights, but the content is so messed up it's not often worth the effort. For instance, I can access Songfight but the main page (and everything else) is too wide for my screen and there's a lot of fiddling that needs to be done in order to read the current week's title and such. Then there's the issue of not being able to stream the audio even though the phone has Windows Media Player. When researching some functions of the phone, I stumbled upon a "Tips and Tricks" page in which the 5th commenter is listed as "JB" and my hope was, cool, I should be able to get Songfight on my phone easily. Alas, that is not the case.

So my question / complaint / suggestion is can we get Songfight mobile please?

sorry, I paid too much for my mobile device, so I'm embarrassed to admit it handles pretty much any site really, really well. You get what you paid for, I guess ;)

(ok, except flash sites)

There is a Song Fight RSS feed. Here is a mobile RSS reader that supports enclosures: http://www.codeplex.com/beyondpod

I found that link on a page dedicated to Samsung Blackjack hacks, which makes me think it should work on your phone.

Of course, you'll have to use a real browser to vote... try Opera Mini 4. Works great on my piece of shit Helio Ocean.

I'm confused. It is some sort of new cool l33t-speak to call web sites "sights", or is this just a common error?

Ha, it's not real common for me. I'm usually a real stickler for spelling. I did say that it was late and that I was feeling tired and lazy though. But to heck with that, it was a good catch and you can feel free to mock me about it (or anything else, like the following question to JB for instance) anytime

JB; I went to download Opera Mini and it looks like it did it, from what I could tell anyway, but I can't find anything listed to actually install it or run it. Here's a loaded question teed up for anyone that would derive pleasure from making fun of the not so tech-savvy Dan-O. Am I just an idiot or do you think the phone (and my company that provided it) is blocking an actual download and installation of the browser?

Exactly. You know, you're cruising on down the "information superhighway" and along the way you stop and check out the sights. It isn't "browsing" or "surfing" anymore; they call it "sight-seeing".

Sorry, my primary language is English, where "you" can be singular or plural, with no real way to distinguish which meaning is intended unless context makes it clear.

It's all good man, I did invite mockery. You just didn't read the fine print which DID NOT include the fact that their might be a rebuttal.

Samsung Blackjack is a Windows Mobile device, so make sure you get the Windows Mobile version of Opera (they might have one specifically for the Blackjack), not the Java version.

It's possible that the device was locked out from downloading third-party apps though. A lot of phone companies do that. It's aggravating. T-Mobile and Verizon are the worst about it, and Cingular/AT&T has been known to do that at times too (especially on their more popular Windows devices). I think the only current smartphone platform which is generally NOT locked down in that way is BlackBerry.

Put that into whatever mobile or otherwise RSS reader app you have (Google Reader, FeedOnFeeds, NetNewsWire, Safari, Mail.app, Outlook, Bloglines, etc.)

Also, tweets and Facebook wall posts are going out every time about: a) new title b) new songs c) fight results. Check Song Fight! on Facebook or @songfight on Twitter.

And Manhattan Glutton is working on an iOS app. I don't have a link for it though.
