Jeez- I didn't mean to stir up the pot....sorry Moboid!

I think that if you feel the "smooth" deep down in your soul, and the album that your song of choice is on was produced by the same folks who produced anyone from the YR episodes, it should fit well.

That's just a suggestion.

And Air Supply is pretty smooth, but is also an "Arena Rock" crossover band.
Tough call.

And Just because Loggins is on the list, doesn't mean that "Highway to the Danger Zone" should be covered.

Eeep-opp-orp-opp-opp...that means I love you!

Justin asks if "Right Down the Line" is sufficiently smooth enough for this cover fight.

ROCK!

Dan-O from Five-O wrote:At some point Moboid needs to lay down the letter of the law and take control of this project the way that Niveous did with Nur Ein. I personally don't care if it's a strictly boxed in set of rules or loosley interpreted set of guidelines, but clarification needs to happen.

Yacht Rock maybe Smooth, but it is not Simple. Particular artists are impossible to blanketly include or exclude. I assert that inclusion must be decided on a song-by-song basis, neither too loosely nor too tightly interpreted.

What I will request is that anyone who would like to do a song links to an MP3 of the original, or an excerpt. So that we can all listen and ascertain its Smoothness and Rockness.

Momentarily I will weigh in with my opinions on some recent suggestions.

So I just realized that in the episode, Michael McDonald actually is apalled by how hard Rosanna rocks. Nevertheless, I think it's pretty smooth. I submit it for judgement:

Please put Seamus and Evil-E down for Steely Dan's "Do It Again." Someone's keeping track of this, right?
"Evil" is simply a disclaimer.

Foolin'

Put me down for "What a Fool Believes" - I don't care if it is the most mainstream of the yacht-rock tunes! I like it.

You should check out Self's cover of this song, performed entirely on children's toys...excellent (as is the rest of the album).

Well if I can't do an Air Suppy song, I'm not doing ANYTHING!!! :x - youse can jam your Yachtfight up your dates...

(...that seems like a good enough excuse for me to back out of something I had no intention of doing in the first place. Seriously, anyone who covers Toto or Kenny Loggins songs, even in jest, will go to hell. Although I suppose I'm already going to hell - after all I did do a cover of a Barry Manilow song a few months ago...)

Self's WAFB cover

Ack! That is an excellent cover, and now I am feeling daunted. Though those don't sound like kid's drums...

It is Smooth AND it Rocks. Furthermore, it inspires homoerotic dance-rumbles. How much more IN the Yacht Rock Fight could you get?

The answer is None. None more In.

I looked it up and based on the evidence available I think it could have a chance (as does Baker Street), but I can't find a version of this song online anywhere. got one?

I opine that although those songs are awesome in their own right, they came from the Pop era of H&O's career, and are neither Yacht nor Rock. How about one of their late 70's hits such as "Sara Smile," "She's Gone," or "Rich Girl"?

Hrrrrrrrm.... No, please.
It's not personal. (Heck, I own a Winwood album.) It just doesn't fit.

I have to agree with Erin on this one. This is Rock for a Jet Fighter, not a Yacht.

Hey man, i was counting on you for LRB's "Reminiscing"!!
And honestly, after browsing YouTube a bit too much today, I discovered SOME Air Supply might count... want to do Sweet Dreams? You can't argue with a les-paul-three-part-harmony bridge. Seriously.

Lady begone

bwell wrote:Is there any way Chris de Burgh's "The Lady In Red" fits into this category? If so, count me in as I've wanted to cover that for years for some strange reason. Otherwise, I will have to do some digging around as I do find the idea intriguing.

That ditty is 80's soft pop, so it can't be in this fight. But it would be great if you could find a song! I bet the other songfighters could help make recommendations for your style and range. You can also check this list of songs that were featured in the video shorts. Keep in mind not all songs that were in the show are qualifying songs. (No Tull, no Van Halen, no Dre, etc)

The album cover lists every intsrument or toy played. Some of the instruments were child-sized actual instruments, which may be the case with the drums.

Does Journey qualify? They had actually come to mind, but I dunno...
