You stiffers, does Halloween sound like a good deadline for submittal?

In other news, I was starting to worry that nobody wanted to enter, but looking at last year's thread we only had 13 entrants as of the 30th so there is time yet :)
I count 9 so far this year.
I also see that Niv set 4 Nov as the due date for selecting songs. (that sentence makes me want to say Nav, Nev, Nuv)

Bill: I don't want to whine about it, but since you asked; I could have done a cover of any one of the songs that were requested last year, and enjoyed myself doing it. Except for the 4 choices I got. I was miserable for weeks, trying to even pick one to do that I hated less than the others, and when I finally chose one, it was beyond my musical abilities. I finally just decided that if someone is going to pick 4 songs like that, they have to know that they are most likely going to get stiffed. Yes, it sounds like I'm whining. I know. You can get the full story from Niv, we had a lengthy chat about it on facebook. I don't know if he agreed with me or not, but he certainly saw my point.

I think that someone (was it Phil?) did this on purpose back during the first Gift of Music. He picked three songs that were either unappealing or uncoverable, and then one that he really wanted. He then got stiffed, and posted publicly that he forgave the stiffer, because he knew exactly why it had happened.

What were the songs, Mark?

(Also, my two cents: if you join the campaign to serve up covers for people who didn't get gifts, you'll have a larger menu to choose from, and you'll be able to make up for past stiffs. Sounds like a win-win to me.)

FWiW, I got stiffed last year, too. Paco did an awesome make-up cover for me though. I don't want to offend anyone by saying what songs I got last year, Jon. I think I would like to join that committee, actually. But I still wanna do this too. But I don't wanna make good on my lack of song last year... I'M SO CONFUSED!

Here are youtube links and (where available) tabs for my song choices.
Frank Black - headache (the audio doesn’t quite synch with the video so close your eyes. You’re not missing much visually unless you’re a bearchaser.) Tab

The Kinks - Village Green (possibly the most abdorably crap animated fan-generated video ever.) Tab

The Last Shadow Puppets - Age of the Understatment (great video w/ tanks, cake and ice skaters – how can you go wrong? Also I want Alex Turner’s jacket. That is all.) Tab - single annoying pop-up when you click on the link, though.

Raefella Carra - Do It, Do It Again (check out the tw*tdancing at around 58 seconds. Awesome!) Tab: You’re on your own, I fear.

Definitely not too late. Last year, the entries had to be in by 4 Nov... we may want to go earlier than that (I would), but there is still time.

Lately I haven't felt up to much music making or music reviewing which doesn't make for a great Songfighter. But the mission is to try and living again and doing things I enjoy, or else I'm going to end up some sort of Henry Darger meets Syd Barrett recluse. So I'm back (in a slightly diminished capacity). Thanks for picking up the slack on this project HInc. I'm not exactly sure I'm ready to take this bad boy off your hands but I think I'm going to join the GOM.

A lot has gone on in my life over the last few weeks and a lot of was really not good. And everyone has songs that remind you of specific times in your life. I think I'm going to pick 4 songs that will probably always remind of this time. Why pick those? Because getting a cover of one of them will in some way reclaim the song for me, replacing something bad with something good. So, here are my four:

"Guitar Hero" by Amanda Palmer
"Maps" by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"Best of You" by the Foo Fighters
"The Passenger" by Iggy Pop and the Stooges
"I'd like to see 1984 redubbed with this in the soundtrack."- Furrypedro.

Warren Zevon - "My Ride's Here," from My Ride's Here (2002) (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JDEdDxloJk )

Billy Joel - "Miami 2017 (Seen the Lights Go Out on Broadway)," from Turnstiles (1976) (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0CgigVZefWQ )

Elton John - "Razor Face," from Madman Across the Water (1971) (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UyNKAJg9KA )

Elvis Costello - "Pidgin English," from Imperial Bedroom (1982) (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tnVF3Z9qgE )
The more I look at this list, the more I shake my head and wonder, "Jeez, do I honestly expect anyone to try to tackle 'Razor Face?'"

So I'm switching it out. Apologies if anyone was hoping to get my list specifically to do that song.

I'm replacing it with:

The Band - "Acadian Driftwood," from Northern Lights - Southern Cross (1975) (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZwkxHYM7lI )
