Post by JonPorobil »

It feels like it was only about a week ago that my wife was saying "Finally! April is over!" A bunch of people we know (ourselves included) wound up dealing with a lot of unlpeasant and unnecessary crap during April. The change in month didn't really seem to affect things much - our unemployed friend is still unemployed, our sick friend is still sick, and our friend whose dog needs surgery still can't afford his dog's surgery - but at least nothing seemed to get worse during May. I just can't believe how fast it seemed to go by. Perhaps it was because of Nur Ein?

Anyway, it's a new month! New stuff to do!

1.) Continue to apply for jobs and hopefully get to quit my current one.
2.) Re-record some recent songs for my next album.
3.) Enter a Songfight (or two, or three...)
4.) Replace my lost wedding ring.
5.) Finish hanging up the posters in the new apartment.
6.) Unpack that one last box...

(probably some other stuff I can't think of right now...)

Question of the Day: What do you want to get done during the month of June?

QotD: I only have one task to accomplish this month - learn how to play my own songs so I don't make a total ass of myself in Spokane next month.

You can learn your own songs, and I'm sure your set will be the better for it, but don't think it'll keep you from making an ass out of yourself. :P

OK - here's another tip for anyone that needs a day off work, and it's so simple!

First - convince your wife to take a job as the public health physician in a small, rural New Zealand town.

Then you go off on a 3 week tour of the USA during an emerging influenza pandemic.

Then, when you get home - all you need to do is make sure that your wife develops some "flu-like symptoms" within 24 hours of landing - and Bob's Your Uncle!!!! The whole family is quaranteened and no one can leave the house!

All you need to do then is settle back for some serious couch and TV time while you're waiting for the swab tests to come back from the lab at Christchurch.

Too easy!

QotD:

(1) Play out at least once each week this month.
(2) Submit at least one songfight song.
(3) Start losing weight for my highschool reunion (30 years!) in October.
(4) Update my website a couple of times.
(5) Begin album recording.

QotD: Figure out how to replicate in a live setting the same kind of bass effects I've been getting in Cubase. My recordings for Nur Ein used various distortion & 'rotary speaker effect' combinations. I'm hoping that overdrive & flanger pedals might get me pretty close?

Haha, I never come to this forum, but I just saw that Spud said he'd choose me as his backup in a bar fight here.

Barring any professional level fighters hiding on the forums, I'd say he's made a good choice. BIG DEAL, YOU WANNA FIGHT ABOUDIT?

QotD:
  • Get my Motif sold and buy a Nord
  • Maybe get a really nice mandolin
  • Start singing/playing guitar more (instead of just playing keys) with Gary Kyle, so that I can
  • Bang 1 chick for every 4 phone numbers I get at these country shows

Henrietta, you know you can get pedals that do rotary speaker effect, right? For example:

http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigation?q=univibe

You'll probably want stereo output, though, like a stereo amp or two amps or a stereo PA.

Nice!! I'd only come across a Hughes & Kettner pedal which cost nearly 3x as much. Thanks for the link! I hadn't even considered the stereo output/dual amp idea.

If you want to just make one purchase and be done with it, get the Bass POD XT Live. Not only does it have everything you need all in one, like foot volume, tuner, stereo and mono outs and USB to download FX paks. But it has the best cab, mic and amps mods I've ever heard, all the most famous FX, including a number of rotary speakers.

I use my POD XT Live exclusively for my guitar. I have my own custom FX chains programed into it. I have no need for anything else.

I'm hoping to continue my quest to enter every fight this year. Year's about halfway done, I reckon. Ayup. Also, spiff up my Spud designed website which I haven't had time to touch. Fear not, Spud, your efforts shan't go in vain! Buuuut, I also added a big learning curve to my git-fiddle understandings by winning a pedal steel on the Bay. Not gonna be easy, but I'll wrangle something listenable out of it. Should be able to get that on one of the upcoming fights. Listen, if you dare.

At work, I've started training at my new position as Unit Co-ordinator. Or as it is more commonly referred to, unit secretary. Go ahead BLT and Ray, laugh it up. Unit. Secretary.

More music! And hopefully buy some stuff with money.

If that's vague, it's probably because my future is clouded.

I'm sure they wouldn't do that for just me, but I'd have to rise to occasion. Or sink to it. I'd put it out as an album called "Cheap 'n Easy".

Also, I' m sure that many people have asked to have their spud spiffed. Maybe not so publicly, though. :)

Oh hey, I thought of something else on my June to-do list... Figure out how to enable the MIDI capabilities of my various electronic instruments on my computer. That was my post-Nur-Ein resolution...

Drat, too late. I just bought an analog OD stompbox. I narrowed down to a Fulltone Bassdrive or an EBS Multidrive... the Fulltone was more crunch mid-dy with an extra boost switch, while the EBS was more tube overdrive bass-y with a lot of low end. The Fulltone sounded better on its own, but I thought in a live band setting the EBS might work out better. My Ibanez has a lot more mid than a p-bass does, and I liked how the EBS cut some of that down. But in retrospect, maybe that's not such a good thing afterall?

The only thing the trashy little Danelectro "Rocky Road" pedal has going for it is the cheap & dirty factor. Still...
