Better late than never!

Thanks, Niveous!

Oooh, what to do, what to do? The possibilities are endless....

*rubs hands evilly* Hey, incidentally, it's worth a passing mention that there is song of the same title from the Broadway musical Avenue Q which also seems to fit the challenge. How veeery interesting...

I know I promised 50% less whining this year, but I can't think of a title I have less interest in writing and the challenge makes it even worse by putting a stranglehold on the lyrics. I can "think outside the box" as much as the next guy but I will find it an unsatisfying chore to fulfill this round's requirements. [/whine]

Oh, don't worry Frankie. I expected to hear at least half of that whine. Schadenfreude is a hard word to wrap yourself around, but look at the meaning. It's shameful joy. It's joy at the misfortune of others. This is a loaded title. You don't have to sing "Sha-na-na-schadenfreude". Hell, I expect a few entries probably won't even use the word in the lyrics. It may be a hard word lyrically but a great concept to write about. Just look at Lily Allen's "Smile". A great example of a song that plays with the idea of schadenfreude. "When I see you cry, it makes me smile".

Hey that song even touches upon the challenge. The next line of the chorus is "At first, I feel bad for a while and then I just smile". There is definitely some potential in writing from two different points of view when it comes to a loaded topic like schadenfreude. As a lyricist, I feel like I could play with that all day.

I just think you need to look at this challenge with an open mind and you'll find that you can produce some great results.

Do you want to write my lyric this week? ;)

My main gripe (and then I'll shut up) is the combination of the title and challenge.

Yeah, it's a bit of a lyrical challenge, but it's very doable.

The biggest challenge I'll have is figuring out exactly "what" to write about. The title "Schadenfreude" is more wide open than most songfight songs, and since pretty much everything in life can be written with opposing viewpoints, the trick is to come up with a great idea out of thin air!

Edit: That's settled. I don't want to say what it is but I thought of something that happened in my life that meets the theme of "schadenfreude" perfectly.

This weeks title and challenge sound like a perfect job for KOMPRESSOR ! :D
I urge you all to look to the archives of KOMPRESSOR for inspiration, and also, for a laugh.

I seem to remember my Sophomore German Prof teaching us a really odd song called "The Schnitzelbank".

"A German-language ditty for children, "The Schnitzelbank Song", is popular among German Americans with an interest in learning or teaching German to their offspring. It is often sung by adults for entertainment and nostalgia."

Coincidently, in 1957, Bill Haley & His Comets recorded a rock and roll version called "Rockin' Rollin' Schnitzelbank".

If Bill can make a hit out of "Schnitzelbank", I think you all can deal with this title too. (says the person who does not have to write a song this week, but is tempted by the comical possibilities). Besides, didn't you write an awesome song for the title "Crinkle Binkle" Frankie? If you can make a hit out of Crinkle Binkle....I think you know what I am saying. I am hoping that your comedic genius will deliver. (no pressure)

Haha, there's no way I'm using that word in my tune. But yeah, time to get writing, I guess.

EDIT: Written and arranged. That was much easier than I anticipated. 8)

EDIT II: Lyrics and demo finished. This is going rather smoothly.

Bail out time...

... real life is throwing me a bit of a bender at the moment and tonight was the last chance I'd have of putting anything together and I'm not going to make it, I have work in the morning then will need to ferry stuff back and forward between Canterbury and Milton Keynes all weekend (step-daughter's stuff, we need to look after while she's in Barcelona for the coming year!!!), probably going to have to do three trips both ways over the next two days, so I'll be dead beat (rather than being a deadbeat!!!)... anyway everything I try to come up with sounds weirdly enough like 'Bowling for Soup's - Life after Lisa' and I've now past my own personal deadline.... s'pobably fair to say I'd be one of the favourites to get voted out this round so I'm not affecting the placings any...

...best of luck to all the remaining artistes, especially my personal favourite four, Paco del Stinko, Tex Beaumont & the Dirty Hearts, Ross Durand and the Tiny Robots!!

Ah sorry to see you go Nigel. You will be missed.

As for me, I have a cold so no singing (or signing for that matter), and I have to say I dislike the title, so there is not much schadenfreudery in the song. Done a first demo though so there'll be something of me in the fight.

instead of singing you could just make an instrumental and read some round one reviews and replies straight off the thread. i do believe that it would both apply to the title and fulfill the non-optional challenge.
