Postby Niveous » Fri Apr 02, 2010 8:24 am

Welcome to the 5th edition of Songfight's Spring classic, the Nur Ein.

Here is how the Nur Ein works.

The Nur Ein (german for "Only One") is a music competition that runs in 8 rounds. Each round is 7 days long. It's a challenge of skill, creativity and a battle against time.

This year's Nur Ein will start on April 14th with Round Zero. Round Zero is open to all who wish to take on the Nur Ein. That day, participants will be given a song title and a challenge.

The Song title will not be a songfight title and will be chosen by the members of this year's Nur Ein Jury, which includes myself, last year's Nur Ein champion Frankie Big Face, JB, Ross Durand and Spud.

The challenge (also chosen by the Jury) is non-optional. Examples of past challenges: Must include handclaps. Must not rhyme. Must include a change in time signature.

The participants will have 5 days to create a song from the title and complete the challenge. When a competitor completes a song, it is to be e-mailed to nurein.sidefight AT gmail.com.

The songs will then be posted here in the forum as well at the new Nur Ein website, which will debut next week.

The last two days of the round are the Judging period where the members of the Nur Ein Jury listen to all the songs and rank the songs from best to worst.

Reviews and loud talking are encouraged but the jury will not be swayed.

On the last day, the jury will make their decision and competitors will be eliminated, leaving us with the 25 official Nur Ein competitors.

Round 1 will start right after that with a new title and new challenge and as the weeks go by the bands will be whittled down.

Round 1: 21 bands, 4 eliminations
Round 2: 17 bands, 3 eliminations
Round 3: 14 bands, 3 eliminations
Round 4: 11 bands, 3 eliminations
Round 5: 8 bands, 3 eliminations
Round 6: 5 bands, 3 eliminations

The final stage will be a battle between the two remaining competitors. The vote of the eliminated competitors and the Nur Ein Jury will choose the winner.

In rounds 1, 2 & 3, the jury's favorite song gets immunity.

Here is the projected dates for this year's Nur Ein: April 14th to June 9th

The title and challenge for Round Zero will be announced on the forum on 4/14, most likely around midnight EDT.

The game is on. Nur Ein!

So the "jury" (formerly "judges"?) will get to vote in the final round?

They've always been called "the Jury", though judges has been used synonymously.

And yes.

Niv,

before confusion sets in you should change that schedule to say:

Round Zero- Wednesday April 14th Title given, Monday April 19th Song due, Wednesday April 21st winner and eliminations announced.
Round One- Wednesday April 21st Title given, Monday April 26th Song due, Wednesday April 28th winner and eliminations announced.

etc.

although I move to have the writing cycle begin on Friday rather than Wednesday, so we write and record Friday to Wednesday, and the judges deliberate Wednesday to Friday.

Your version is actually more confusing since you have Round Zero twice. :P
I figure there's no need to say all that just yet.

Listen to what i mean, not what I say!
i fixed it.

I think you should post the due dates though, just like last year people are already assuming the songs are due on the day the next title is given.

Which people? I didn't see them post here.
Any which of way, if they're confused now, they'll understand when the Nur Ein starts because the announcements will include the Song due dates.

I am IN and I like the Wednesday - Monday thing. But that's just me. Fridays are my unique recording time, so that will give me Wednesday and Thursday to compose and think through it before sitting down in front of the microphone, then Saturday and Sunday to fiddle with the mix before the deadline.

If I wanted to name names, I would have named names, but I said "people" so they may remain nameless.

Wooo I'm so in this time! I've always loved this idea. I'll be doing this alone, but quesssssstion... can I collaborate with other artists/friends of mine, some of whom may take over major parts of songwriting (not all of it), but only on certain weeks? I'm fine with it either way, I'd just like to know.

Well there are precedents...opinions...and all sorts of rigmarole on the subject. I'm going to go the easiest road on this one. You know who your collaborators are, enter as a "group".

Tex Beaumont & the Dirty Hearts will not be entering this year. Tex has left the building.

An amicable agreement has been reached with this chap that there is only room in the world for one Tex. And he looks like the sort of bloke that probably carries a gun - so he can be the Nur Ein Tex if he wants.

I suspect that somebody as yet unnamed will step in to take Tex's place.
