The Elephant Choir wrote:Hi all,
Need help! Wrote and recorded a song for current song fight, but when I mix down to MP3 with my new Pro Tools 10 setup, the mix is SUPER low. I don't understand because my gain staging was fine - hovering right around end of green/beginning of yellow (-12ish). I tried using the Maxim plugin on the masterfader and it gives it a bit of a boost, but not nearly enough. I've tried the limiter too (ratio up at 20/1 and boosting the gain), but it sounded horrible - all murky - and doesn't even give me the boost I need. I just don't understand why I'm having this problem since my input levels were fine. I'm not trying to get a super loud/compressed radio master - just something that isn't WAY, WAY lower than all the other Songfight tracks. I went to the other songs that I've been working on since I got this new Pro Tools set up (I haven't gotten to the mixing stage with any of them yet) and tried bouncing them down and same problem - gain staging fine, but mixdown crazy low. I don't get it?

Im pretty new at this but i would try duplicating the master track and EQ it and add some boost that may beef it up some?

Alright, got my piano part recorded, and most of the lyrics written. Two more lines and I'll be a lock.

Ps- that sounds much snarkier than I mean it to. Just meant to be a little nod/wink joke.

So bizarre you should say that. I'm entering this fight (but I'm not using the thread for lyrics). Funny you remember my "Get a Life", I thought of it this morning.

I'm trying something different, something my wife and I have talked about doing for a long time. She has a blog called The Heartbreak of Invention, and wrote a blog post called "A Conversation", which then I wrote the "score" to. So the idea is you're supposed to visit her blog and listen to my piece while you read. (There will be an embedded player you can play from on the blog, should be pretty straightforward.) The Song Fight-posted version of the song will start with a spoken explanation to help get you to the blog.

It was a fun project. Once her piece was done, it took me about 4 attempts to finally come up with something we're both happy with. First it was a song based on her piece with lyrics, but that didn't work, so we went back to the "scored blog" concept, but still I tried three entirely different approaches. I didn't even start the final one until last night at 10:00. Before that there was a lot of thrown out music, I gave up on the whole endeavor completely twice, and we got in exactly one argument over the project, (since resolved).

Someday we also want to make a graphic novel strip continuing story based on SF titles which would be these little sung scenes in mini-graphic novel form. We don't have an artist though.

Also, I turn 50 Wednesday.

I'm in, experimenting with recording direct to iPad.

Hi Jim, funny the coincidence, looking forward to hearing your entry.

Oh yeah...and I just wanted to say that I don't want people to think they have to vote for me just because this fight is due on my birthday.

I mean - if you have already posted me a present, that is is enough. Really. Of course...if you missed the post..then I guess a vote is the least you could do I suppose. Or if you sent me something crap - like less than $100 worth (proper Australian dollars - not $USD, I'm not dealing in 3rd world currency) - then, well, I'll leave it up to you.

Ooh, it's a birthday-off. My birthday isn't the day they are due, but this year it has a zero at the end, and it will likely be the day many people first hear the fight.

Happy Birthday Ray!

I only had two hours to write and record this one. Ah well, at least now I can say that I've written a song in 2012.

Some day I will enter a fight that is not a last minute rushed and crappy mix.

Maybe.
