Yes, I'll put the link in my sig. I've been too busy to update audioshards lately anyway (but it will be back!)

I can tell you my chain and method. But I do it a little different from song to song depending on what I'm after. But the chain is always the same with a few tweaks. It might have to do with my old Porsche red flying-V Ibanez bass, lol.

Frankie, I too love your song.
In my book a refrain is a kind of chorus, but my book is welcome to editing.
Way to play lawyer ball!I have to say I am really counting on the judges to recognize that a refrain is different than a chorus. Any casual listener to my song would say it has a chorus, but it doesn't--it has a refrain. Don't disqualify me!

Re: Nur Ein VI: Round One
Wikipedia says ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Refrain ):
A pop chorus is not the same as a refrain. A writer on pop-song theory, Davis (1990), opines that a refrain musically and lyrically resolves a verse and therefore ends it, whereas a chorus begins a distinctively new music section of at least eight bars. A refrain is often a two line repeated lyrical statement commenting on and/or summarizing the preceding verse...:

For the record, I made a post with a joke about the chorus/refrain debate to which Glen is probably replying, but I deleted my post, because I didn't want anybody to misconstrue a probably poorly made attempt at humor as anything else. I have no opinion or interest in the chorus/refrain thing.

Re: Nur Ein VI: Round One
Round 1 was a very strong batch of songs. Impressive. It's going to be tough for the judges to choose as we go along with this many good players in the mix.
Here are a few thoughts on some of the entries...
Abbott & Hines
Liked the piano and lyrics for this one. You're making progress. There still needs to be a way to get you both on the same page for your performance. The timing just isn't there yet. Loved it was about a Wal-Mart greeter.
Billy's Little Trip
Nice little neo-punker. Reminded me of Klark Kent. Made me smile. In my top 5.
Bram Tant
Bram finds his guitar. Nice riff. Not the best choice to have the drums in stereo, and pan the vocals and guitar full L/R. You have some passion in the lyrics, but it's overmodulating the mic. Good effort.
DJ Ranger Den
Den goes back to her safe zone. Nothing wrong with it, but it's also very similar sonically to many of her other songs. I wonder how this would feel with a different keyboard preset? Easy to say, since we went back to the same blues tune well from Masters of Song Fu, harder to accomplish.
Embers of Autumn
I kinda lost the vocals in this mix. Are you using a standup piano with a condenser mic? Didn't come together for me.
Frankie Big Face
Nice production. Had me tapping my feet. Good guitars and drums. In my top 5.
Glen Raphael
I like this better than your last song. Lyrics build well. Vocals were a bit tinny on my speakers.
John Kloberdanz
You said it's an Alt 80's mix.. but it felt like a odd 60's mix between Peter, Paul & Mary and Zager & Evans with a fast paced 70's Harry Chapin riff tossed in for good measure. Didn't jell for me.
Jon Eric
I liked the metaphor and the use of cones to tie in colorblindness. Nice piano work. Vocals are a little off, but fit the mood for the song.
Luke Henley
Stream of conscious riff on death, Superman, and cola drinks. Kinda fell flat for me.
Manhattan Glutton
I liked the way this built up. The xylophone and guitar choice made it work for me. I had to download the extended version because I was curious where you went with the alternate ending. One of my top 5.
Mersian
Another solid effort. Sweet love song without being sappy. Another top 5 song
Paco del Stinko
You gotta love a song with Woahs in it. Nice production values. I felt some of The Tubes in the guitar solo...
Rabid Garfunkel
Interesting choice of keyboard presets - kind of piercing. It did go with the off key singing. I'm assuming it was intentional. Not my cup of tea this round.
Ross Durand
Wasn't expecting the keyboard solo in the middle. Solid production in the song, but wasn't inspired.
WreckdoM
Fun tune with a funky middle. Nice use of voices. A little over-modulated in places.
Good Guitar work.
WSA
Trippy look down memory lane. Sugar Ray inspired middle break. I liked how you tied the song together in the last stanza.
I'd like to see more of the entrants do some commentary - if you can write one, you can give feedback.

Concerning the panning, it was not intentional but caused by mono recording into stereo channels in Garageband, which I didn't notice until afterwards.

Re: Nur Ein VI: Round One
Reviews! I was a capricious judge 2 Eins back, and I'm still a capricious reviewer. And I suck at math.
Abbott and Hines
In headphones, the instruments overpower the lead vocals Clever lyrics, but the tempo's way draggy. Kinda turned the "Sentimental Journey" nod into a dirge.
Billy's Little Trip
Good bouncy meter action, yo. Dig it. Top 5
Boffo Yux Dudes
The heavy 'verb on the vox vs. the dry harp makes for a weird acoustic space for the mix. Punny (if you orange so sure) if I'm hearing it right.
Bram Tant
Drum intro made me think it was time for California Über Alles, heh. Rocking playing, but the panning stuff is, well, we've talked about that.
DJ Ranger Den
Gets the beatnik snap for applause, but less piano in the mix and more vox! Please!
Embers of Autumn
5:25? Please have something to say... more changes in the left hand on the piano would've made possibly some more interest. Sorry man, 3:00 and I'm out.
Frankie Big Face
Yeah, I'd say that's a reprise, all right. What fx are you using on your vocals, a phaser? Trippy in the headphones.
Glenn Raphael
I remember liking this on the computer at work... yeah, still do. Top 5
John Kloberdanz
Damnit, now I've got to dig out "How Soon is Now". Good Morrissey there.
Jon Eric
Couldn't hear this over the machines @ work, so, like a first listen. Lyrical delivery sounds really rushed, crammed, jam-packed. And somewhat restrained, from the "step back from the mike and let 'er rip" reviewer The air glitch at 2:09 was weird. Grim end chord there, heh. Dig it.
Luke Henley
Aside from the kick (?) in the left channel only, this is pretty diggable, even in its rough demo state. Top 5
Manhattan Glutton
Intense, slutty groove. Waiting for the tension release... you must be evil in foreplay, heh... 1:24, fuck yeah! Top of my Top 5
Merisan
Goddamnit... you're KILLING in the S&G vibe. Second in my Top 5.
Paco del Stinko
Paco at top form! Creepy and catchy! Top 5! Fuckin' tasty frenetic, yo.
Pop Machine
Waiting for it... waiting for it... and... not doing it for me, sorry.
Rabid Garfunkel
Ouch. Massive fail in the vocal delivery. Still, I dig that Rhodes patch, but "Gar-den"? What was I thinking? Kimi liked it, though, so the Round 1 love song is at least a success on that level.
Ross Durand
Solid, but it's not connecting with the Ross-love gene I have. I dunno, but hey, you're not gonna be in the bottom of the pack. The 128 colors/only using one was pretty damned good.
The Worldly Self Assurance
Meh. Not my thing. Solidly done, competent in all the musical stuff, but... @2:04, ah yes, my anti-Modest Mouse bias. Now my blahs make sense. Sorry.
WreckdoM
Who are you, and what have you done with WreckdoM? Totally unexpected '70s grooving here. The femme vox could have used some fxing to share close to the same space as the male vox. But shit, this is cool. Third in my (increasingly inaccurate) Top 5.

Re: Nur Ein VI: Round One
As long as people are posting the occasional alternate mix - here's mine.
I almost always have as the base of my track a solo-acoustic version recorded live. Here is the one from this round. Knowing I would be adding later means I left some spaces, but I like the way the song plays this way, as well.
