This sounds like one of your tamer songs, Paco. It is only about plain old prostitution after all, not eating prostitutes, or something. I get Taxi Driver style images when I listen. I love the jangly jauntiness, especially in the riff towards the end. Ray Davies would be proud.

This is definitely Glen's nerdiest guitar solo yet, it takes a few listens to get used to. I've got a bag of chips* for anyone who can figure out what he's trying to do. I think it's worth mentioning that Melvin was awol for this song, which makes me a little bit sad.

Paco Del Stinko wrote:Whiffs of Jackson 5 (!) in certain guitar rhythms

Ha! You should hear the track we discarded for Heart Shaker. The phrase "thinly-veiled plagiarism" might be appropriate.

I agree about the vocals, I was unsure about whether to comment to my bandmates about that. I'm sure I've irritated the fuck out of them to the max already over the last few weeks. I wonder if there's a line? How close am I to stepping over it? Maybe I already have...

Nah, I'm sure your bandmates still love you, Pete. Too bad about Melvin. I thought he had a hand in the lyrics, but the production didn't sound quite him, good as it is. Of course, he could blame you if you somehow lost, and you can say "See? Who needs ya, Mel?"when you win. :)

All I can say about the guitar solo is maybe he's trying some kind of Jimi Hendrix "All Along The Watchtower" angle. Neat, whatever it is.

Also: Seems to be a BLT-ready bad joke in your comments above. See if he pops in.

I'd have to guess that he wanted to step on every button on his FX pedals.

It sounds like I remember hearing a lot of those fx throughout Nur Ein this year. So maybe he wanted one solo with each effect he used this year? shrugs

I think the music should stand on its own. So disregard my next post if you don't want to hear the thinking behind the solo. I'm talking to you Roymond, you don't want to read the next post until later. However, I think Spin will want to read it sooner than later.

DO NOT READ THIS if you want to be eligible for an English bag of chips. Or if you don't want to know the thinking behind my solo yet.

I wanted different voices as so to further distinguish the phrases. Basically it's a WSA Nur EIn VI medley. Transposed to 180bpm and Ab:

Fuzzy Wah says: “the First Blood was Sylvester Scott…”
Clean Wah says: “..this is one is for my brother, and this one is for the broken hearts..”
Captain E-Bow says: “You are, somebody I will always love…”
EVH –Women in Love Octave Tappy says: “ When the explosions cease and the smoke is clearing…”
Pigtronix says: “when the sun goes down..” Then the Guitarmony Girls sing: “I won’t go back again..”
Wes Montgomery Clean Octave chimes in : “..Prime the paddles until I revive..”
Fuzzy Pig says: “ They run into the sunset I remember when I used to do that”
Steve Vai Zoom Pitch shifter says: “Holy crap! This is the LAST CALL better get some shredding in!”

To whom it concerns: unless you already did so and I missed it, i suggest one of the mods e-mail each of the participants and remind them to vote. Those eliminated in round 2 or 3 may not necessarily be paying attention to the timing at this point.

Paco: I think you should do all your songs in your falsetto from now on. Reminds me of Our Lady Peace a little bit!

Glen: Did you intentionally rip off your blame it on ginger melody for the solo? Are you trying to be cute by tying in all the songs?

Manhattan Glutton inquired:
Glen: Did you intentionally rip off your blame it on ginger melody for the solo? Are you trying to be cute by tying in all the songs?

I don't know if cute is the right word. Basically this is a long and intense journey. I wanted this final round song to feel like a grand finale, or an ending to an album. Some of my heroes like Genesis and Yes will have these kinds of guitar solos at the end of their albums where you can hear melodic motifs re-appear from earlier in the album. So I was basically going for that. I picked my favorite little melodies from the 7 previous songs, not necessarily the hookiest of the hooks, but melodic moments I really liked. The patient #7 2 bars is admittedly going for cute or sass with the wah guitarmonies responding to the call. I thought a song called "Last Call" should have some call and response in the solo. I thought it it was fun, and I thought it was also okay if no one got it, because I think it's musical enough on its own without the concept in mind.

Anyway, I think Pete owes you a bag of chips.

So does Spintunes get a vote? I would think so (alternate). Or I guess his vote only counts if it decides the whole thing (breaks any ties).

My vote is still waiting to be bought this round.

You may have won this Nur Ein Paco, but Ken is the king of Nur Ein (he's got 37 Nur Ein songs, next highest is Ross at 29, (I'm at 28))

I'm very happy for you Paco! Every song was awesome, especially Colourblind! I can't feel bad about losing to such an awesome musician and super nice guy!

It was awesome to have the WSA bcak together again. I love all of our songs!
