Circle of Titles III

Post by Mike Lamb »

I'd like to continue the tradition of Jon Eric's "Circle of Titles." CoT 3 should have been last July, but it looks like it never happened.

I hope Jon won't mind if I poach his sidefight!

From Jon's post 2 years ago (edited for dates)

Here's the idea:

1.) Everyone who wants in announces their intention to participate.
2.) Each participant thinks up a title and submits it to me.
2a.) Please do not make your title purposely nonsensical or difficult for the recipient.
3.) I randomize stuff up so that each person gets someone else's title, and send those back.
4.) Each person records a song for the title they get.
5.) At the end, the songs will be posted, along with the revelation of who submitted what title.
6.) Titles are then up for grabs for whoever wants extra credit. Also, there will be an opportunity to for others to step up and record songs for the "stiffees."
7.) For the record, I'll be participating, too. Yes, that's a little unfair. Get over it.

Due dates:

Titles to me by 3/7. I'll shuffle em up and send em out on 3/8.

Songs due by 09:59 15 April 2013. PM me or email to mike lamb at sheep sound dot com.

Ah, yes, other things in my life have sort of intervened. Thanks for taking the reins, Mike!

My stitches come out tomorrow. I'll see how difficult the piano is for me at that point, and I'll decide whether to participate based on that.

I wanted to do this both previous times, but haven't been able to due to other commitments. I am happy to report that I am in this time.

I think half the fuun is trying gift someone with the coolest title you can come up with, that way you have the best chance of great music coming from it.

I got a great title last time. I'm probably in and I just figure if I get something that's so long and/or so nonsensical and/or so juvenile that it's not at all inspirational, I'll be enormously liberal with the rules.

I didn't know what the hell to do with "Bourgeois Orchestra" so the lyrics suffered a lot, but I had fun making it.

For a great example of this, look at Suckweasel's track from last year :-)

Here's the previous year as well:

http://joneric.table2.com/Circle.html

I will go ahead and add a "rule" (or at least a request) that your submitted title not be PURPOSEFULLY nonsensical and difficult for the recipient, as I think Heuristic's appeared to be for the first Circle.

i would like to partake, i had a blast last year... my title was a little nonsensical, but so was my song, which if i remember correctly was about the violent world of organized haberdashery. i no longer really have the time to record songs quickly for the regular fights, so these side fights are what i live for. count me in!

To be fair, though I can see why that title frustrated Bill, I didn't think it was a terrible title. I thought Irwin was the one who really got shafted (both times!).

For instance, would "Why Yes, I DO Have A Pistol In My Pocket, But That Does Not Necessarily Mean That I Am Still Not Pleased To See You" be considered "purposefully nonsensical and difficult for the recipient?"

Also, for the record, "Apodan," who suggested that title, turned out to be Weakest Suit, who hasn't been around lately as far as I can tell.

Finally, YES, count me in!

Tough call - Irwin's recording turned out so damn good, it'd have been a shame to not have it play out the way it did. I'm not going to editorialize people's titles. If I see a title that I feel was submitted for the purpose of being a goober, I might contact the submitter and ask them if that's really truly what they want. I'm not going to censor it, however. The titles will play out as submitted, so my "rule" is really more of an impassioned plea for sanity.

No, of course it wouldn't. It's a bloody good title that led to a bloody good song. Stop your whinging.

There are no stupid titles - there are only stupid people.

And here is one you can have for free:

I don't really want to do it - but I think it wouldn't be fair to the rest of you to deprive you of one of my titles

BTW: I just look back at the past thread of this - trying to remember what songs I go - and I found this excellent suggestion from some genius:

Caravan Ray wrote: Can I suggest that everyone gives 3 titles. Randomise and distribute - everyone will get titles from a few people - maybe even get one of their own back. And everyone gets 3 to choose from - like old skool SF! That way no one is stuck with just "Circle of Titties"

I still think that sound like a good idea.

BTW - you are all invited to join the special "Caravan Ray Double Circle of Titties Challenge":

For the first 2 years of this - each of my entries was a song written to 2 titles - the Circle of Titles on AND that weeks Songfight proper:

- Virgin Nancy (You are the Heatbeat of the Office for Sure)
- That's How I Feel (Front and Centre)

So - if I end up getting another crap title like I did from the last two idiots - I may do the same again

I did the first one doing a rap rock thing covering Abba's "I Saw the Sigh" for backing. It was fun. I tried to follow the same theme on the second one, but life happened and I couldn't get it finished. I see it still sitting in my unfinished songs file. It reminds me to not take on more that I can do. Unfinished songs leave tiny holes in my soul. Too many tiny holes might kill me. Sorry Jon. But at least now we both have a tiny hole in us from circular things. Image
