Your favorite music podcast?

Post by ken »

Hey All,
I’m listening to podcasts more than anything else in the car now and want to have more music podcasts. Which ones do you listen to? I like NPR’s All Songs Considered most of all.

The Trap Set, which used to focus solely on drummers, is solid. Marc Maron often interviews musicians on his WTF podcast. The Talkhouse also has great moments.

Marc Maron interviewing David Lee Roth on WTF a couple weeks ago was an especially good episode ( especially for a Van Halen fan)

Thanks For Giving A Damn - Otis Gibbs - Less about music (writing, production) and more stories from musicians. Most of them are super cool stories, too. Even the stuff I didn't think I'd be interested in were interesting.

I'm currently loving Tales From No Man's Land, which is Frank Turner's podcast about his new album. He's going through track by track talking about the stories of the women who the songs are about. https://frank-turner.com/podcast/

I also love I Only Listen To The Mountain Goats, which is Joseph Fink (writer of Welcome to Nightvale) and John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats. The first series is about the album All Hail West Texas, and the second series is (mostly) about the new album, In League With Dragons. http://www.nightvalepresents.com/ionlyl ... ntaingoats

I also listen to another one made by Joseph Fink and his Nightvale cowriter Jeffrey Cranor which is less about music and more broadly about creativity in general, called Start With This. http://www.nightvalepresents.com/startwiththis

I've mentioned it before but the Questlove Supreme podcast is an amazing treasure trove for music lovers and nerds. You can get a few very brief samples of it here on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=P ... zIuamhJfeC

Unfortunately it's only on Pandora, although you can listen with a free account (you need to sign up but you don't need to pay).

Thanks for sharing this. I was aware of his music, did not know he had a podcast. Enjoying this.

Bad news for Pandora but good news for everybody else, the Questlove Supreme podcast I mentioned is going to relaunch on iHeartRadio, and won't be exclusive, so it should make its way to Apple/Spotify/etc. starting November 6th,

You’ll come around...

You just need three years working in close proximity to the biggest Mountain Goats fan in existence. Which probably isn’t going to happen, I realise. They’re also *great* live.

Wow, produced by Jad Abumrad from RadioLab!

I also found a podcast called Smart Music Business and downloaded a few episodes to check out. It seems like it could be useful if you are still a musician trying to "make it."

Really enjoying the "Listen Now" podcast about Australian band Cold Chisel (who I didn't know at all and not really my bag). Two fun hosts talk about the Chisel back catalogue track by track. Available on all good streaming services. Here is a link to a list of episodes - https://podcasts.google.com/?feed=aHR0c ... Q&hl=en-GB

(Sorry, long time no post and I've forgotten how to do the short url thing)

Oh wow. That’s gotta be an interesting podcast, regardless of how much you know about the band or if you even like their music at all.

Yep. I think it's a compliment to them that I've listened to them all DESPITE not knowing or caring for the band.

I actually find that it’s easier to get into backstories about people/bands I’m not so interested in - something about less opportunity to be disappointed perhaps?

Similarly, I found the Metallica film (?some kind of monster?) really fascinating, but have no interest in their music, and I watched the Wilco documentary before I’d really listened to them at all. Go figure.

April Richardson, a comedian, married to Martin Rossiter, a musician. Martin Rossiter (90s Britpop band: Gene) explains to his wife April - why she likes a song. Seems to get into writing and composition and stuff.

Holy fuck. I only just saw this. I have to listen to this podcast.

Cold Chisel are one of the greatest Australian bands of all time. We can talk about The Triffids, The Saints, The Easybeats, The Go-Betweens, Midnight Oil, INXS - the great Australian bands - Cold Chisel is in that group.

And personally - I love Cold Chisel.

And of course J$ is one of my favourite SongFight people. So - I must listen to that podcast.

I completely agree with this. Learning all about Rivers Cuomo's songwriting process ruined Weezer for me forever.

So this podcast is GREAT. They’re doing a Patreon/subscription model rather than ads, so there’s a couple of full episodes available and the rest are 15 minutes of an episode to hopefully interest you enough to subscribe, which I finally did yesterday when I saw the Don’t Dream It’s Over by Crowded House episode come up. For me, it’s definitely worth the $2 a month.
