Nice job Paco!

I'll put it into the mix of videos for SFL (And it fits for the Listening Party as well)

Just updated the form with my video! I also switched my night preference to "Either" - I had August 28 before because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get the video recorded this week. But I did! I'm excited for this!

Hi kids.

I’m not going to be able to pull together a set, but would love to send a quick hello vid - would it be okay if I popped that on the g-drive thing-a-me-wots-it?

I've just switched my night preference from "either" to the second night. Not gonna be able to have a video ready by the first deadline, but will definitely have time to work on it this week.

Sure. That could probably be squeezed in somewhere.

Hi All,
A reminder that the deadline for participating on the 21st is today.

If you want to participate on the 28th, the deadline is in a week. We will not likely be able to include anyone who hasn't signed up and provided their video by next Sunday in the next show. If you can't make it, just put that energy into the live fight. Title available soon.

Ken

Just popped a teensy 17 seconds of me and Lollypops halfway up our mountain. Feel free to pop it in somewhere if it works. No pressure.

I updated the form with my video yesterday. The video quality isn't great (and the singing isn't much better :D) but on the plus side I got it down to 10 mins.

Will this also be on YouTube or some other more-open platform? I want to be able to link friends to this and a lot of them absolutely refuse to touch Facebook with a ten-foot pole.

Of course! The plan has always been for it to be on YouTube, just like last year. And just like last year, we've made Facebook events as ways for folks who use that platform to show their interest and/or get an event on a calendar as a reminder for themselves, same idea as the Google calendar, etc.

Ah, okay! I thought this might have been a Facebook streaming event instead.

For folks who missed last year or who didn't understand the plan for this year, we'll be once again using the Song Fight channel on YouTube:

https://www.youtube.com/songfight

Please subscribe if you haven't already. And if you missed last year all four nights plus the Seth Gibbs tribute plus the live fight are on the channel, a total of probably 20+ hours entertainment for you to enjoy.

I've been terribly frustrated editing video on my own and found that hiring someone from Fiverr.com to do it for me was totally worthwhile. Just a suggestion for anyone struggling. Just remember, you didn't have to buy a plane ticket or pay for a hotel to go somewhere for Song Fight Live this year, so you can use some of those savings to get your video done.

Speaking of video editing frustration, I think this is the last time I use Final Cut Pro for anything. Holy heck, that editing software really wants to excel at a handful of things at the expense of any sort of flexibility, huh.

Between the crappy way the “story line” works, the ridiculous UI problems that happen when you have more than 3-4 layers, and the way that its effect plugins and title generators make it really hard to do anything that wasn’t specifically put into their various templates, I really should have tried DaVinci Resolve this time around.

For folks having trouble getting their videos small enough for the Google Docs form to accept it: Handbrake is a fairly straightforward program that does video conversions, and it comes with a bunch of useful presets. The default "fast 1080p30" is probably perfect for submission purposes.

Or, if you're a bit nerdier, I'm using FFMpeg with:

Code: Select all

ffmpeg -i sockpuppet set.mov -c:v libx264 -preset slow -tune film -crf 22 -b:a 256k sockpuppet-2021.mp4
which is resulting in a bitrate around 5.5Mbps, and should be about 450MB large.

In case anybody is having trouble finding pertinent details in various posts in this thread, we'll be trying to keep the first post updated with any emerging details (like the signup form, etc.) added to it as we go.

Oh, and another way to reencode your video at a good streaming bitrate is to upload it to YouTube as an unlisted video, and then after it finishes HD processing, use youtube-dl to download the processed version. YouTube's processing is pretty good!
