Thanks, Rabid. I can't wait to start playing it live, actually, because it's fun to play.

I had a co-worker record me playing it acoustically this afternoon. (Thanks, Dougie!)

I am not working on reviews but just to say that so far, and as usual, I am loving Danyer's contribution(s) although it's frustrating as usual that it's just a little tooo sloppy at moments to be truly great. I know there's only a week or so for each song, but when the vocals are so together most of the time you really notice when they're not.

Still I love the little uncredited dan natter at the end with (I assume) Denyer making noises at the same time. That is symbiosis right there. Great beats too, although the Uke is probably mixed a little loud, in retrospect. Anyway, I will probably vote for Danyer.

Zipline - Good jam and more together than some of your other entries: same mission, same page. I like the soaring Rush feel and the well done variations w/o straying too far. Great playing all around and the minimalist vocals are wise and fit well. please keep at it!
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for the praise Paco, it means a lot coming from one of the many amazing musicians who contrtibute to this site.

This is my first response, and I only felt compelled because of something you said in your review. Normally, Zipline gets together for an evening and improvises tunes for a few hours, some of which have lyrics devoted to the weekly songfight. What we end up with is 8 - 11 discrete songs of varying quality. Sometimes we get a great 12-minute jam, and other times we end up with 5 minutes of me rushing every drum fill

So, ALL of our recordings are done live with no overdubbing, and we pretty much get what we get. Last week we spent the entire time on the tune itself because it took a while to really get the feel for the 5/4 intro and then the 7/8 - 7/4 interlude. Of course playing 4/4 during the verses that include the "minimalist vocals" to which you referred gave us all a nice reprive from counting out too much time!

And thanks for noticing how much more together we were on the tune, we really had a blast playing it too!!!

Yes it is from Lolita. I had a sample from a previous project. Thought it made for a good intro.

Only listened to about 2 or 3 so far, but I love Glenn Case's a lot. The lyrics, tune and song structure are all pretty strong. Likely to be a great contender. Loving Melvin's too, as usual.

Will do the rest tomorrow...

B.Ellison: There's a touch of 'Golden Brown' about this, lovely gentle melody, very Melvin(ish) in places, and I really love the organ line, stirring! you will win a fight very soon!! with entries like these, maybe not this week but soon, it's just so accessable, (minor gripe, though nothing to worry about!) not too keen on te fae-out.

The Friedrich Honinghosen Project; Same backing track as last week, much better and more relevant lyrics, once again strangely compelling, though surely "Grudge Fucking" is two words!! :D

Rone Rivendale: Don't really know what to say about your stuff anymore, yep it's better, but it lacks something to keep the ear interested, there isn't a lot to latch onto, quite barren really! sorry!!

Klownhole: Rocky Horror camp gothic wig-out stylee, excellent for the genre but not kicking my can!

Wages: Definately not a poor excuse for a wedding song, totally digging your vocals and playing here dude! some really clever lyrics, espcially the 'wonderful tonight' references... TOP 5.

Damien Verrett: What a really cool song!! with a terrific twist, the background pads really create and acentuate the gentle melody, nice track!

Billy's Little Trip: excellent drive and feel to this, really god playing and singing, maybe let down by a slight lack of variation (who am I to judge...huh?) but otherwise right up there! good work!

spOOns: Hasitly put together, end bit is sort of tacked on, FAR TOO MUCH REVERB!!! and forgot to adjust the squeak! oh well!!

Yes Yes No, Yes: curious backwards/forwards soundscape, not really getting it but strangely interesting nonetheless.... hmmm!

Voh: Good if a little barren, lyrically it feels like you've put too much in, kinda feel I'm sort of dragged along rather than going with the flow, definate promise though!

Andre was here at Midnight: Ooh! now this is one of those songs that really gets under your skin, I totally enjoyed this, the vocal style is compelling with the verging on the pleading, total control... great job... Top 5.

The Narcoloungers: this is like Pauline Murray (penetration and the invisible girls) singing something that should be on the 'Breaking Glass' soundtrack (Hazel O' Connor), seriously good song!

Thank Glennny for the Frisbee: Hammy Hamster's Tales of the Riverbank melody drifts into a warm place that evokes memories of the Lovin' spOOnful's 'Rain on the Roof', what a beautiful song and a possible vote.

Paco del Stinko: Great gothic overtones, almost vampiric in style, the harmony voice intro is inspired and coupled with clean intelligent lyrics and masterful playing make this one of Paco's best... possible vote.

Dangerous: Lovely tune!

Bear Squadron: Sorry! but this is great fun for what it is, you must have had a real good laugh making this!

Emergency Pizza Party: Now this is the absolute bomb as far a rap tracks is concerned, (is that Smalltown Mike in there?) Rap as rap should be, the female lines are just spot on, perfect! 100% and possible vote.

Zipline: Not too keen on the intro, but loving the Cure(ish) 80's jingle jangle, I'd love to hear more of that, I'm also quite fond of the sols after the first verse, a good song that maybe with a little extra (maybe a chorus!) could be a real contender!

Jimmy and his TV Jet set: Wedding march is unessesary, seems a little tacked on, i like the bongos and the nice way this speeds up during the chorus, could probably do with a little open hi-hat just to keep the ear interested and the track fresh.

Melvin: Apart from the obvious weezer comparisons, this to me has a little of 'Candy' by Ash about it, good strong chorus and another strong entry as always!

Sorry I'm a bit drunk!!.... I'll do the others tomorrow.... (did I already say that?

My FIRST set of reviews!

Post by the_prisoner »

Let me just preface this by saying that as the Zipline drummer, I will sometimes take the opportunity to critique the drums or drum programming. If you listen to my playing you will find that I'm a good player but NOT the kind of monster player that takes far more practice time than I am currently playing. I probably consider myself a jazz drummer first and foremost, but certainly enjoy playing all kinds of music from 70's prog to 80's dance to R & B to disco! Ok, here goes the reviews:

Adnoisium - Hauntingly hypnotic. Were those Casio PCM sounds?

Andre Was Here At Midnight - Maybe it would have been better if it were in time? I liked the piano a bit, but fire your bass drummer, even if it's a machine!

Bear Squadron - Nonsensically annoying . . . yet almost cute!

B. Ellison - I like the progressions in the chorus a lot! The verses were just ok, but an overall solid effort.

Billy's Little Trip - Fairly well recorded, but it sounds a bit too mechanical. A decent cut, but I lost some interest toward the end.

Cranial Biffida - Depeche Mode meets Marilyn Manson? I liked the darkness of both the music and the lyrics. A good song.

Cynthia Size and her Eclectic SpOOns - Funky as all hell, call it funkatronica! Was there a fraction of feedback in the loop? I liked it.

Damien Verrett - Soothing and disturbing, what a combo! I think I enjoyed the track . . .

Dangerous - It's not that I'm against drum machines, but they take some time to program well, and even with the good live playing on this track, I couldn't get past the drums. Sorry.

Danyer - Funny shit! Marginal playing, but a mildly entertaining song because of the lyrics/vocals.

Deux Freres - Anok song, just not my style and the drums were lackluster. A good effort though.

Emergency Pizza Party - A nice reprieve from the other tracks. A touch monotonous, but also interesting and well "sung." A good song.

The Friedrich Honighosen Project - Should I kill myself or you? I actually liked this morbid track, but I'm not sure why . . .

Glenn Case - Of course, well recorded, and I like the bars of 6/4 in there. For me, the chorus outshined the verses. The drums were appropriate, but off at times. Excellent vocals and an overall good track.

Jacob Lynn - I really likes this tune. Finally someone programmed some interesting drums besides Glenny! Cool piano, one of my favorites!

Jimmy Jet and His TV Set - I like the changes in feel and time. Not the most amazing instrumentals, but I liked the track.

Klownhole - Ozzy would be proud! After hearing so much folk and techno this is a welcomed cut that is also performed well.

Melvin - Well recorded and nicely performed. Sometimes grating, but it held my interest throughout. A good track.

The Narcaloungers - The opening guitar reminded me of the acoustic guitar that leads into the vocals of Changes by Yes. And the vocals (which I liked) certainly resembled Natalie Merchant's take on Because the Night. I liked the keys a lot, but the drums were just off too much. A good song.

Our Dog - Not sure. It was different, interesting, throaty. good metal drums. short, sweet and grimy!

Paco del Stinko - A well written, well played early 70's metal-inspired cut. So, Paco, how do you REALLY feel about marriage?!? A damn good song, possibly the best of the fight!

Rone Rivendale - A drum machine stolen from Madonna meets marginal music and flighty-bad vocals. Pretty poopy! Glad it's short.

Thank Glennny for the Frisbee - One of the better tracks because of the solid vocals and inspiring arrangement. Maybe too many stringed instruments, maybe not. A very solid song!

Voh - Bittersweet morbid lyrical fun made me laugh! Sweet acoustic guitar work. Nice cut.

Wages - Hmmm, nice effort, but I wasn't thrilled. I kept hearing "Finish What You Started" in the guitar line. Maybe hit and miss, but overall just ok.

Yes Yes No, Yes - What the fuck is this track?!? Who shat on the Leslie?

Zipline - By far the most musically ambitious song of the fight (if I may say so myself!) Recording was good. Sparing vocals were solid considering Martyr is also playing bass at the same time, as is Glenny during the intro/outro. Drums were occasionally off, but considering all of the odd meter and limited recording time, they were pretty damn good. Clearly our best song to date, and a solid live recording with no overdubs. This was a really fun song to play too!

Hello all. I am B.Ellison. I contribute regularly and read all the posts, but I never contribute reviews. so here goes. BTW. thanks for the reviews, I don't remember who it was but I'm glad someone picked up on the Golden Brown vibe I had in this weeks entry.

First off
the best (no order of preference)- Glen Case, Frisbee/Glenny, Paco, Melvin
the runner ups- Klownhole, Billy's Little Trip, Deuex Freres

Adnoisium- A simple and weird introduction to the basic concepts of marriage.
Andre was here at midnite- Use a metronome next time.
Bear Squadron- Joe Meek's alien voices. basically unlistenable.
Billy's Little Trip- Intro way cool, then I didn't like where it went, and as soon as the vocals kicked in I liked it again. Very Nirvana's sliver (mom and dad went to the show). pretty good overall.
Cranial Bifidia- I don't really go for midi songs. The Tales from the Crypt of wedding songs. Rob Zombie/Mansonesque.
Cynthia Size- The drums are a little thin sounding, and the main vocal is too low/backup vox too loud. Wish it was a little less effected too, because I really like the melody.
Damien Verret- Not enough voice, too much reverb. Liking the lead guitar part. breakdown cool, coming into the outro was cool but the editing was a little rough. Good track though.
Dangerous- Bossa Nova? sweet. I really like this bass line, and the lead guitar is rad. The bass is too low and muddy to make out how cool the part really is though.
Danyer- Too dissonant to be listenable. Cleverish funny stuff in there though.
Dean Sky- Sounds like Syd Barret or Brian Eno covering the Grateful Dead. With Johnny Cash singing. Good bouncy vibe.
Deux Freres- More Grateful Dead. I love this drummer. Very well mixed and produced, if not my personal taste in music. Well executed, one of the better entries this week.
Emergency Pizza Party- Not a big fan exclusively midi stuff. Or the need to swear. Like the "welcome to hell this is your wedding song"
The Freidrich Honighosen Project- Only vaguely resembles an actual song. The "marriage is like a job" thing is cool.
Glen Case- Oh, here's a song, really an actual song. Cute, good poppy vibe. It bounces, its catchy, and its well mixed and cleanly produced. There's something rough about the way the chorus comes in, but the part itself is really cool. Top contender.
Jacob Lynn- An attempt at IDM that doesn't really work. The vocals and piano are rad, it just takes a little too much time to get there.
Jimmy Jet- Why is the sample not integrated into the song? As is, it comes across as unnecessary. The two sections of this song are cool, and each by itself would be part of a really good tune, but together they don't work.
Klownhole- Coming out of the last acoustic tune, the intro was immediate and jarring, but in a good way. Very APC or Tool's Opiate. Cleanly put together, one of the stronger entries this week.
Melvin- Another very strong entry. Harmonized lead guitars? sweet! Catchy, rock-radio ready pop music. Not my style necessarily, but very well put together, good variation, good vibe.
Narcaloungers- Patti Smith? Heart? Somewhere in there. The synth near the end comes in a too noticeable way. Overall okay.
Our Dog- METAL!!! but seriously not a fan of metal. Good for what it is.
Paco Del Stinko- Well done Dead Kennedy's horror rock. One of the better produced entries this week. Not my style, but very well done, good pacing and variation. Top mention.
Rone Rivendale- Don't like exclusively midi tracks. the vocals don't fit melodically with anything thats going on in the rest of the song.
Thank Glenny/Frisbee- Yes, this is one of this week's best entries. Kind of don't like the wrestler line. Lyrics remind me a lot of Modest Mouse. Instrumentation/Vocals are spot on. Cute and catchy, something I would listen to outside of songfight for sure.
Voh- Think there may be a shaker in the background, but I can't tell. Nothing really strikes me about this.
Wages- Cleanly done, mixed well enough, but there's something about it I don't like.
Yes No Yes- Incomprehensible. Some good things in there somewhere.
Zipline- Problem with the cord? editing rough, and the middle drags, but each section has its merits. Mathy and interesting. A more developed version of this would be really good.
And in the end the love you make is equal to the love you take.

Not to the best of my knoledge. They're some of the default vintage percusion in Fruity Loops. I've been meaning to get a wider variety from Synth Mania, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

hey if i decide to quit being lazy i'll type up some real honest to goodness reviews soon. but in the meantime, i just wanted to say i was surprised to see that so far nobody has mentioned how cool it is that paco del stinko managed to bring in dr. teeth for a guest vocal spot...

also:
wormsweater wrote:I suppose that’s supposed to be “wedding song” but it sounds more like “weneedig sond.” Or “we need a colonic.”
for some reason i got the impression the song was about condoleeza rice -- sounded like "we need (a) condi"
