Fans of Amy Adams' face will love this movie. Fans of geopolitics will find it annoying; fans of mystical philosophy may find it bemusing.
Fans of science fiction may or may not be impressed, depending on age and experience; or so I gather from the film review sites, which I consulted after seeing Arrival. If you're into action scenes, I wouldn't recommend it; if you like speculative fiction, you may receive the impression of depth. One thing is clear; either you'll be swept away by what some say is visionary filmmaking, or you'll wonder what the fuss was about.
Put me in the latter category. Personally I was reminded of Neitzsche's "eternal recurrence," which made the movie sort of thoughtful, but it didn't make up for all the silliness holding up the plot.

Re: Arrival
I thought it was a pretty compelling movie, even without many big explosions and chase scenes.

Re: Arrival
"Impression of depth" is apt. I'm in the shrug camp.
