Hi all, I've been entering songs pretty steadily for the last few months, but I thought I'd introduce myself properly (anything to distract from the pandemic, election uncertainty, and the confirmation that about half of my country-people support a lying, preening, fascist, racist, misogynist etc.). Anyway, I'm Matt, I play saxophones reasonably well, harmonicas a little less well, guitar and bass pretty badly, and keys about as well as a very important male character in a sexist 1950s movie types. I grew up playing alto sax in school, but occasionally had the opportunity to dabble in bigger and smaller horns.
I have played in occasional jams and bands over the years, and have always loved performing. I learned about Song Fight probably around 2007 or 2008 when I played in a band IRL with irwin (nutwalls, suckweasel, other charming band names). I never actually entered until the pandemic gifted me with a junked (but as it turns out repairable) Korg T1 and forced me to clean out a spare room enough to turn it into a home office/music room. Had no idea what I was doing when I submitted my first entry for "Please Scream Inside Your Heart," as Matt Just Matt. That was a stupid name, so since then I have been entering my songs as Night Sky, which is a collaboration with my wife, who writes most of the lyrics, and our friend Steve, who provides the drums (when they're good; when they're lame, that's me). I still have a ton to learn about songwriting, recording, production, and probably most of all, time management. But I feel like I've been improving, and have been edified that the community here seems to like my sax playing and provides such great feedback to help me improve at this craft.
When I'm not songfighting, I work in water policy for the state of California, among other crazy things.
