The reason being is that the other mix was rushed in for Friday and I slipped up on a few things...... any way if anyone is reviewing I'm putting up a new mix which is better since it doesn't have the beginning chopped off and the ending which has a minute of dead air...... sorry for having to wonder about that if you listen to the other version......

alog - the intro voice is a bit overacted, like william shatner not on a good day. also, i'd recommend not rhyming all of the lines there. when the drums start in, there are weird little hitches, like you didn't loop them correctly and you can't dance to it. very distracting to have all the little hitches. this gets very repetitive.

pipefist - Nice intro. I'd leave off the bassy thing at :15. I like the vocals, especially in the chorus or whatever. Did you say "I'm a woman"? Heh. Ok. The clickety drum doesn't seem quite in time. Heh, good ending.

2oo3 - not bad flow. especially in the "chorus" part. you get quieter and less good as it goes on. Some parts of the vocal timbre bug me. not sure if this is a rap voice, naturally... but this is a pretty fun event nonetheless.

littlesmokes - I like this one. Kind of a neat mix. I might vary up the melody of the verse lines, i.e. not sing each one the same in the first verse. Layering of sounds is great. On first listen to the fight this was my favorite. maybe it still is!

cr410 - vox need to be louder to stand out more, i can't understand this. watch the plosives into the mic. the flow is ok, but there's no intensity. not digging it. the chorus comes in later than it should. music is too repetitive. ending was pretty amusing.

nearg - the grungy lead needs more grungy vocals. interesting, but way short.

swindle - the vocals are not quite together. i like the arpeggio. weird!

asperse - that whine in the one speaker is annoying. you've discovered a loop pedal and that you can make noises into a microphone and that they'll keep looping, yes. i've done goofy things like that. wow, that annoying whine is still there. this isn't doing it for me. the whine... arggg

carpetburn - neat. don't think your vocals work as well as last weeks'. the cadence is kind of weird. the multiguitar parts are working well near the end, especially cool is the wiggy one. pretty good!

zero - pretty cool. around :25 or so this is good. this may benefit from a few more vocal takes.

eclectic - don't like your cadence, amd the vocals and music are not at all together. i don't see what the title has to do with your domestic disputes, but maybe i'm not understanding your lyrics enough.

gavin - the wah guitar is cool, but seems out of time with the rhythm. vocal is pretty pitchy. you shouldn't try to hold the notes that long. i think there's a pretty good song here, but the performance is making it difficult. watch the mic poofs.

roner - the vocal is so not immediate. maybe you need more effects. not really in tune with the music or stuff. also, weird cadence. what connection do these lyrics have to the title? seems a weak connection.

jerry - ok, so, uh, what's the deal with this song? does this have anything at all to do with the title? it's pretty good, but i don't see why it's in this fight.

draft - nice atmospherics. how many people are in this band? maybe the vocal is a touch loud. i think the mix is a little weird. also, the drums are a bit harsh. bit pitchy in the vox. pretty cool, generally. i don't like the monosynth noise at the end (it's distracting from the rest of the song), but this is good.

hinc - my entry. don't pay attention to any philosophical details you hear in the lyrics, they just made for good rhymes the weird synth solo at the end is the first thing i recorded for this fight.

hans - ah, i forgot to download this from the board. here we go. glad to report that this is worth coming back to. "some people say" vocals are particularly good. i like this, but not as much as little smokes. might be a little repetitive in the words.

there are three in total, although the drums are played via midi, and the mono synth is actually a dying ebow (battery dying) and was the second take of TheHipCola. Mono-synth=gutar. Thanks for the reivew.

here's what I'm up to. I have to say, that I didn't look at the artist name for each song before I tried this. And it was REALLY hard for me, cause I'd tag a one word response on the tune, about half way through, and then I'd have ..thoughts. I really enjoyed tunes that I called "medicore" for example, cause I'm TRYING to review the song, and only the song, instead of the person, performance or production this time.

i'm just glad people are listening, i figured people wouldn't like this song, and it's pretty far from what i usually do. i wasn't just going to write some boring poprock song with lame vocals, i was trying to capture the essence of the song title with noise. the fact that others don't appreciate this, was expected and does not bother me in the least.

Er, the spoken word is kind of lame. It reminds me of some stuff some of my friends did when they were in high school. The techno is way off beat to me, and the little pauses annoy me. With the way the loop started out, it seemed like you were going for an Autechre feel, but then you just didn't do it right. I guess you weren't taking this seriously, but you didn't actually make it funny. Boring.

Welcome to Songfight. One of us listens to a lot of Ochre and Lamb, and it seems like you're trying to do that subdued psychedelic sound and it's not going anywhere. The sounds clash in all the wrong way. Everything is peaking. I can't enjoy this. Better luck next week. Take out the sine. I don't know if this is a binaural beat, as I'm not listening to this on headphones.

Get down off the mic. Or get a pop filter. Everything is peaking out. having a cheap mic is no excuse. Bass line is okay, but it's too quiet, and you need to do more EQing. The rap is not enjoyable. The beat is boring. Egh. Stopped listening to it at two minutes.

I like the intro of this. You did a really good job of making those drums sound real. I'm listening to this on my mom's computer, and I think the sub is up too loud, and it sounds like the bass might be too up front. I'll check that again when I get home. The staind vocals aren't doing anything for me. But the song is overall pretty good, I think. It always seems like you're getting ready to go crazy. I'd like to hear you experiment with your vocals more. Don't be afraid to sing, dude. I like the end.

EDIT: Okay, after listening to this at home, the bass isn't bad at all. The sub was turned up way too much at my mom's house and I wasn't getting any of the highs. The separation is really good, and I still definitely love the mastering on this track. How exactly did you do your drums? I still feel the same way about the vocs. Except that they don't sound quite so Staind-ey. I apologize for that.

This is enjoyable. It's just short enough to not get annoying. The vocals are off key in just the right way. I like the lyrics. Good song.

JESUS that guitar. Way too tinny. Maybe you have a bad setup, but you can get rid of that. Everything's all fadey. The wah is screwing up the EQ really bad. They are in the same range. And you should definitely cut some of the highs on the rhythm guitar. The vocals are overpowering way too much. And you should be singing punk or something, this doesn't suit your voice. You're way too close to the microphone, and you could stand to put some reverb on your vocals and don't sing directly into the microphone to get rid of the pop. Your singing is off, but if you had more confidence, I think you would sound better. The chord progression is good. Download some better recording software, like Cool Edit Pro or Adobe Audition(which is the same thing). If you have dial-up, get Audacity. It's a small file. PM me if you want some help with that.

Heuristics, Inc

The intro is pretty decent. The vocals bother me a lot. The other dude with me says he just wants to change the song at that moment. I, however, can see the appeal in the music. It's just not our style. The bass bridge is horrific, says my other band member. My brother in law hates this, but he's hated everything so far. I think he hates life.

Please everyone stop using preset loops. Vocals need to be turned way up, as do the guitars. Generally this song is suffering from bad mastering. I can't hear the song well enough. It sounds like I'm listening to this on headphones with a blanket between my head and the speakers. There is definitely good potential in this, but I just can't hear it. I like the vocals when I can hear them. Just bring everything to the front more. The beat would be less noticeably preset that way. Also I would suggest starting the song with something other than that preset beat. Or if you were using it to make sure you recorded the song on beat, which is what I usually do, take it out and just go into the song.

EDIT: On good speakers, this does still sound muffled, but not quite <i>as</i> much. I would also like to say that this song has a lot of good potential. It's very well composed. Around 2 minutes, the vocs sound a lot clearer. I think it's a possible vote, despite it's problems, just because as a song it's good.

The Little Smokes and Steve Durant

This is definitely the most well-mastered of the songs I've listened to. Vaughn doesn't like how you're singing. I don't mind it so much. At about :35 the song suddenly loses me. The lead afterwards is too timid. Nice trumpet though. Could be turned up and given a higher EQ to be brought up front. The chorus I just can't dig. The drums sound nice. About 2 minutes, the drums are either time stretched or peaking really bad. Doesn't fit very well, in Vaughn's opinion. Again I didn't really mind it. I like the dual vocals. The ending kind of falls apart though. Like you just lost interest in the song. But it's still not too bad, especially production wise aside from the trumpets.

Nearglobal

You were definitely going for a They Might Be Giants sound, it seems. Turn that bass drum down. Sing out more. I'm glad it's so short. It could've gotten very old. It's a nice little blurb of a song.

Pipefist

This sounds very different on these speakers than it did on headphones. Maybe we should've brought the guitar out more at the front. And in retrospect we should've maybe added more reverb to the vocals.

Rone Rivendale

Again with the spoken word and then the bad techno. You can make the mic sound better, even if you don't have a great one. Get some EQ patches or something. Beat is repetitive and annoying. This isn't really very funny or anything.

Swindle Staccato

The piano is very nice at the intro. I really like this. Very muppets sounding. Recals Octothorpe a lot. I like the coffee and cream line. The electronics aren't annoying in this. This sure does sound like the Postal Service. I loved the outtro. I dig the hell out of this. I wouldn't be terribly ashamed to lose to it.

I like the Carl Sagan sounding intro, but not much else. The bass should be brought out more. I've heard much better rap on here. I would not give this a 2 out of 3.

The Zero Effect w/Radio North

I like the Rolling Stones intro. I'm told this is very Sonic Youth ish. The vocals are kind of annoying. Maybe it's just because they are so flat. It sounds like a live recording that really wasn't so well recorded. This reminds me of a band that plays at this open mic near me called Zurn Scott. They are really enjoyable, and for that you get points with me. I could see this being very fun to listen to live.

Carpetburn

This song sounded pretty decent at first, but after playing it on loop I got tired of it the second time through. Decent guitar work, but not much else.

alog - i enjoy the bass like square wav in the right channel. this song is a bit repetitive at times but the chaos of the rythm is very unsoothing (which is good).

asperse - while reviewing yourself is probably taboo, so is creating such a strange and, well kinda shitty song. yes, its true, i just got new delay effects, but i did this because i belived it represented things otherworldly. thanks for anyone who has time to review it, but keep in mind expression surpases enjoability to me... and spelling means nothing. lol

carpetburn - nice rythms! nice execution. song is a bit derivative but still decent, i'd like to hear more of what you've done.

cr410 - i find it humorous and, frankly delightfull. i used to hang out with some frat kids from this engineering school, yea... sometimes it was like that.

draft - very nice. i can't say much other than i enjoyed this song. one of the best this week

electric spoons - i found this one kind of satirical, probably because i'm so synical. lol

gavin - not too bad. like the lead guitar, but the level may be a bit too high.

hueristics - makes me want to hop in a car and drive kinda fast, not too fast. i guess i'll have to take the bus though.

This is my first post and review.. I've been reading and listening to song fight for a couple weeks now and plan on trying to submit something for this weeks fight (2/6) but thought it would be cool to be giving back some reviews in the meantime for all the listening enjoyment i've had these past weeks.

A-Log
The speaking part isn't really doing it for me either.. As far as the 'halting' drum pattern in the beginning goes, it is a bit disorienting at first. Once the higher-pitch x-files tones come in it starts to work a little better. I actually do like a bit of the vocal break that occurs at 2:38.. 'see, feel, touch..' maybe just because it is refreshing to be out of that loop, but who knows.

Asperse
A lot of these sounds and textures are fairly horrifying.. in a soundtrack crunchy dark-room monsters kinda way. Makes me think i'm stuck in doom3 or something. Yeah, I really dig the drone and noise intro. Once the speaking/singing starts it loses me. I dig the part from 2-3mins a lot. Those vocal samples and the percussion work for me there. The drone does start messing with my head eventually.. like after a really loud concert and your ears are stilling hurting... but go figure, thats often something that is present in drone type music.

Carpetburn
I really like the intro to this song a lot. Guitar eq seems a little high or off somehow.. maybe the drums too? Vocals remind me a little of 'at the drive in' (in a good way) I think the mix could use some help, but am not used to describing that kinda advice in a written form.. maybe i'll learn. I do like the bass as well during this song and the chorus harmony was nice. Perhaps the song is a little busy in parts for me, where it keeps me from really getting into it and going on the journey all the way.. but there are some very enjoyable moments in here nonetheless. Somehow I get reminded of 'sea and cake' as well.. maybe its the drums. Anyway, nice work!

Man.. that bass is REALLY low (pitchwise). I like the intro to this one too. And the guitar 'hits' riffs are catchy. The rapping could use to be tightened up a little as it sounds like your tripping up and it doesn't let the listener relax enough to trust the flow. I like the funny bits between the raps. The lyrics are sciency and funny. The chorus interests me in the part where it goes from the higher voices to the lower pitch 'galaxies floating on a dark matter stream'. Yeah, I think if the rapping was a bit tighter and clear, this would be more listenable.. but, as I can't pick it all out, the story/song loses me i'm afraid.

Draft
This song is pretty good. The textures and playing are well done. I don't mind the 'staind' vocals.. it fits the tone of the song quite well. That bass is nice and deep and I like where the leady guitar synth is sitting. Midi drums? Well.. nice work on those midi drums! Yeah, I dig the chorus and the singing.. nice tone in the vocals.. that little bit of grittyness. I think this song could also use a crazy bust out part (like someone else mentioned) but works well nonetheless. The ending might be a little protracted.. but overall great work. I think i'll go check out some more of your songs.

Not sure that the vocals are really meshing correctly with the music in this song. Almost sounds like two different musical ventures going on. I find it interesting how the keys or whatever go in and out of working. I like the ending and its short and sweet with that little echoing 'door' part.

Ouch.. mega-tinny! Anyway, maybe its your setup. As far as the song goes- The lyrics are interesting to me. Sounds like you have a decent enough voice, but maybe just need to keep on gaining your chops and experience. I almost could picture morissey singing these lyrics.. heh. The wah guitar is a little much at times.. Well, I do think there is a song hiding in here somewhere.. it just needs to be carved out a little.

Dig the music on this track.. nice tones. I think you have a good voice, but the rhythm of the singing is not working for me. I think its maybe the '1 2 3 4' equal accent thing your doing on every beat that is not allowing this song to breath.. especially given the subject matter.. this song would want to be less rigid and more, well - floating! The chorus works marginally better because there is some variance of accent. Anyway, I think i'd like this a lot better if the rhythm was different on the vocal delivery during the verses. Otherwise, I can hear a lot of good going on in this one.

Heh.. I like the 'uh' bit with the hip hop piano in the intro.. and there's some kinda funny high pitch vocal noodly bit thats interesting. Whoa.. was that something about a shark? Heh. I like the music during the chorus. Something about the eq is way to muddy in this song. Like all the eq i'm hearing sounds very middle of the spectrum. Weird. There are a lot of nice riffs going on.. but sometimes it seems like the instruments aren't really part of the same song.. not a key problem, but a feel or style difference. Tough to explain, but it just seems like.. especially the piano isn't really part of this song. Perhaps its just the mix thats messing with me. I can't really understand the lyrics and haven't looked up them in the archive (if they're there..) but i'm curious as it sounds like you were singing about sharks.. and thats cool. heh.

The Little Smokes etc
Love the voice! Can't tell if the vocal is male or female, but thats sorta interesting. Like the music.. nice feel. The 'lead?' guitar is a bit outta rhythm in sections. Enjoy the horns. Nice tempo change at around 2min. I like the vocals and lyrics in this song.. nice line about a sugarcube. Something about this reminds me a little of 'blue oyster cults' don't fear the reaper.. but, regardless- nice work on this one. Sounds like with a bit of tweaking perhaps.. especially on the rhythm of that one guitar.. this thing would be pretty enjoyable.

Near Global
Vocals need to be louder.. or rather music softer.. in either case, way out of balance here getting in the way of me being able to 'listen' to the song. Really short though wow.. lets play that again. The music is a funny little clunky riff.. almost like techno-oompa.. heh. I also hear the comparison to TMBG that someone else mentioned.

Pipefist
Whoa.. can't place this style right of the bat.. besides hawaian lounge? (joke) heh. Like the chorus.. and the slide guitar. The drummy bits sound a little odd during the chorus.. a little distracting. I do like the vocals on this piece. The lyrics seem funny and interesting so thats cool. Reference to 'metroid'.. nice! heh. Yeah, thats a very catchy chorus. Cool song, not too shabby.

Somehow this song is really catchy even though the vocal delivery is over the top vibratofied.. somehow i'm hooked on those harmonies. Also the lyrics are interesting. Wait.. two songs entered with lines about sugarcubes? Little smokes had a line about sugarcubes in coffee also.. weird. Okay, I see.. both your songs are sharing a bunch of lyrics. Nice entrance of the beat.. I was not expecting that. The chanting bit is a little unexpected at first.. but I think it works in a bizarre way. These lyrics are cool. I dig this song for sure.

This vocal delivery reminds me of weird al's version of 'amish in paradise' The chorus is really catchy.. but I can't shake the weird al rap image. Besides that .. whoa.. hah, love the line 'Whose ready for some heavenly spheres' .. these lyrics are quite funny to me. At points the rap is really well done.. and the weird al thing is a compliment in my opinion but might not be what you're going for.. who knows. The music wasn't that bad either backing this thing up.

ZeroEffect.. etc
Man.. I thought 'the who' was gonna bust through in the beginning.. but then it quickly lost that vibe and went somewhere ... different. I'm having a little trouble getting over the 'ween-like' vocal range of the one voice. I had a roomate back in the day that listenend to more ween than was healthy.. heh. There are some really catchy parts to this song.

Okay, not sure who i'm voting for yet, but my four contenders (in no order) are draft, the little smokes, carpetburn and pipefist.. will have to listen a little more to make my mind up.

I can't wait to submit a song.. song fight is the coolest thing i've found for people into making music in a while on these here intarwebs. Take care ya'll.

just for the folk who talked about video game samples. no i don't really play many video games, and all of the sounds on that song are homemade. the droan was made with cool edit pro and is just a sine or something of that sort i can't remember. the other noise where made with my mouth , a mic and a pedal. not that i mind being told my stuff sounds like dark video games, to the contrary i quite appreciate it. thanks for the comments!

This has happened before (not to me but to other people). They were up in the public domain a day or so early. Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery. I don't even care that you didn't seek permission first.

But not crediting your source? That implies you wanted people to think you had some original thought. This is irritating and therefore, in my eyes at least, you are twats.

Not sure if my first post should be a review, but I seem to be breaking all the rules and upsetting most people so here goes...

Two out of Three:
This is pretty cool, I like the spoken matter of fact rap type thing, sort of bloodhound gang, besides lyrically you've got a touch of tongue in cheek humour all in all a good job.

Pipefist:
Sounds a bit John Sebastian, which isn't a bad thing, nice jingly jangly feel and very good vocal execution, in and out just right.

Anthony "A-Log" LoGatto:
Yeah this sounds like something I'd do, and I don't have a particularly high opinion of my own stuff, the spoken intro could be a little more weird, after that it's too repetetive.

Carpetburn:
Terrific band name, Billy Bragg type vocals, I like this, sort of stuff i wish i could do myself, probably won't win because it's not 'pretty enough'.

Gavin:
Just a bit too Folky for my liking, though it's not a million miles away from what carpetburn have done it's just not done as well, also TOO LOUD MAN!

Now the instant this kicks off, I go WOW! fantastic until 40 seconds in then it all drowns into one noise, but recovers enough when the horn comes in, all in all if I heard this on the radio I'd be dissapointed that it didn't live up to the high standards set by the opening few bars, but a bloody good song nonetheless.

A-Log (*1/2): The poem is cheesy, but in a 1920's kind of style. I may be the only one, but I like it. The song however, does not display any creative talent after that. There's a certain amount of repetition that I can take. But this song just went on, and on, and on, and on, and on, with out changing. Reminds me of that horrid Bloodbath song off of the blade soundtrack. Just so you know, I'm not biased against instrumentals, but I am biased against bad instrumentals.

Asperse (**): Farts? Did you record yourself farting? OK, I was liking it until you came in with your boring voice. I feel like I'm doing some pseudo-scientific binural beat testing or something. Five minutes is way too long.

Carpetburn (***): Ahh.. a nice relief. Nice music, don't particularly care for the singing. It's not too bad, though.

cr410 (**): Invest in a better mic. Or maybe EQ it with more highs. It sounds like my ears are plugged up. And believe me, I know what that sounds like. Not a big fan of rap. I don't have a lot of experience in this genre. But it *is* boring.

Draft (****): I like this song. Peaceful, and cool. Reminds me of Starflyer 59. And you can sing!

@Eclectic Spoons (**): Vocals seem a bit off. I wish it would have built a little more.

Gavin (***): I like the guitar riff. Gives it a space-western feel. I like your vocal tonality, but it is not exactly in tune.

Heuristics, Inc. (****): I like the darkwave sound you've got going on here. Is this your typical style? If it is, I want to hear more of your stuff.

Jerry Jurkowicsz and the New Crusaders (feat. Johnsonic and the Takahah Surprise) (***): Vocals are a little quiet, and a little unclear. That doesn't mean I don't like the song. I'm not really seeing how the song relates to the title.

Little Smokes (****): Groovy. Horns=teh win.

Near Global: Me. Yeah. I guess I succeeded in creating an annoying little blip of a song that's so stupid but so catchy that you can't help but listen to it twice. And yeah, TMBG is what I was going for.

Rone Rivendale (*): Oh dear, not more of that bad techno. I know you mean well, but if you're proud of this, you're horribly mistaken.

Swindle Staccato (***): OK, so the lyrics are stolen. Production is pretty freaking sweet, though.

Two out of Three (**): If this is rap, I'm going to kill myself. Aaaand it is. The sample at the beginnig sounded so promising. Really needs to build at the "chorus," more than just a light pad in the background. The pad should be there through the verse, then build the drums, and add a nice synthline or something. Thoroughly boring.

The Zero Effect w/ Radio North and Maya (****): I just went back a couple decades. Back before I was even born. Ever heard of Steadman? Reminds me of that. Guitar is too loud, vocals too quiet. I feel like grabbing my girl, kicking off my shoes, and taking her out to the prom dance floor. I'm going to be singing this one for a while.

I don't know who I'm going to vote for. I'm going to have to listen to the good ones for a while.

About the Jerry Jurkowiscz lyrics and if they relate to the title. I saw the words "floating" and "dark matter", which made me think of poop, aka the dark shark.

The basic storyline is that a friend of the shark leaver is thought to be a girl, and s/he's seeing this other guy you don't care too much for. That dude finds out his squeeze is a guy, stands her up. Sharkleaver got pist about that (he didn't know the full story) and exacts revenge.

So, it definitely relates, in that the lyrics truly did sprout from the title, just not in the nebula / atomic physics sort of way some of the other titles do.

I mixed this at 2AM after playing a show, so I apologize for the less-than-perfect mix.
