Melvin Goes to Hollywood

Post by melvin »

Just thought I’d share the news that nine of my songs (including five from Songfight!) will appear in Shred, a new Tom Green movie coming out this fall.

Songfight songs:

The Vishnu Cycle
Rhymes With Lucia
Sugar Shaker
We All Need Love
I Like to Pretend (Rone Rivendale cover)

Non-Songfight songs:

It's Not Fair!
Aches & Pains
Say What You Wanna Say
Tokyo Ghetto Pussy

And yes, Rone will receive credit as lyricist for his contribution.

Here’s a synopsis of the forthcoming filmic masterpiece:

In Shred, two washed-up snowboarders must transform a gang of misfit "shredder" wannabes -- including a midget, an 80-year-old lady, a biker and a chubby kid -- into professionals before their boyhood nemesis has them all banned for life and plows over their fledgling snowboarding camp.

The celebrity ensemble cast includes MTV alumni Tom Green (Stealing Harvard, Road Trip) and Dave England (of Jackass fame), as well as Renee Renee (actor, snowboarder, skateboarder and host of Slam City Jam skateboard contest). The film is written and directed by veteran David Mitchell and features appearances by numerous pro snowboard riders including the notorious Wildcats, Ross Rebagliati and more.

I’ll update this thread again once I know the release date, and I will be certain to post photos of Rone and I guzzling champagne at the premier gala.

Very cool Melvin, congrats.
Are they using your songs as is, or are you rerecording them?
Also, give us the details of how your songs got picked. Contest, agent, etc? This sounds like an interesting story in the making.

They're using the songs "as is", somewhat surprisingly. I think the production shortcomings will be less evident beneath sound effects and dialogue.

I've been pursuing music placement in movies, commercials and TV shows lately, so I submitted about 30 tracks directly to the film's music editor. I almost got a gig for a Hellman's mayonnaise ad last week too, but it didn't pan out.

Various music placement agencies are happy to look at indie artists because our music is... well... cheap to license! In fact, I'm getting a licensing fee of a whole $2 per song, which means the only way I'll make money is in the form of songwriter's royalties. Therefore, I now have a vested interest in Tom Green's film career, which is kind of weird.

But what's kind of neat is that half the music for the film was created for Songfight! I wish I could get them to put the URL in the credits!

Congrats! Which service did you use? Or does "directly to the editor" mean no service?

Yeah, it's not the money, it's the fact that your hard work will be appreciated by hundreds of thousands, maybe millions. If it becomes a cult fav, it will be around for generations.

Thanks for all the support, gang!

Agree with you BLT - it's the songs having an audience that matters far more than the money, no question. And in answer to Bill, no agency or service was involved - it was a direct contact with the music editor.

Holy shit, that guy's a genius.
Why did Madonna...[chhhoooorrrrkkkk]...why did Madonna feed Alpo dog food to her infant child? Well, she had no choice. It's just what came out of her breasts.

Just so you guys know, I've known about my involvment in this whole thing for a couple weeks now. Melvin told me on myspace that his cover of my I Like to Pretend would be in the movie. It's pretty sweet.
From spoken word to actual singing, I can screw up any style with style. :D

Incredible. Don't forget the little people who voted for you and helped bring those songs into the public consciousness!
