Re: Nur Ein XV Final Round "Pistols At Dawn"

Two acts enter. One act leaves. Congrats to both the finalists, and Jon Eric for a rarely precedented victory! (Unless my information is incorrect and no one has actually won Nur Ein without winning a round before the last one). The Cavedwellers song was also fire, and Balance Lost, also a shout out...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Six "Homestretch"

I thought all 5 songs were worthy of the finals. I loved all 5 of them. I wasn't going to be surprised with any combination for the finals. I think we are very lucky Balance Lost (Balance Regained) wasn't in the competition anymore. That was an amazing track Pete! Say Hi to Melvin for me! Just want...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Six "Homestretch"

Maybe I've been listening to too much Yes last week, but I kind of want the 7 minute version of that song. I will even take the 12 minute version

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Six "Homestretch"

Ok so I'm pretty swamped today again but here's some quick hit reviews. These particular 5 songs felt pretty close to me from the beginning since each of them has strong points that are really strong, but at the same time, each had particular things that I thought kept me from thinking they were rea...

Re: Nur Ein XV Final Round "Pistols At Dawn"

Glenn might feel differently, but I thought our final song last year served best to put more focus on Vowl Sounds' song hahahahahaha

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Five "North Beach Vampires"

R5 North Beach Vampires: Sorry again for the delay in putting these together, it’s been a hell of a week at work and at home. My reviews are in results order, not my ranking order, again because I’m too lazy to reorder the template hahaha. The origin of this title came from a bunch of riffing on som...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Six "Homestretch"

What I realized last year is the challenge is as good as you make it for yourself. Of course last year Glenn and I went a little overboard anyway, but that's sort of our personalities.

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Six "Homestretch"

I think you guys should hold a betting pool about which challenges came from which judges, I'm super curious now to know what you think.

I'm also curious to know what you all think are good challenges, because I have a theory about this. Possibly for a different thread though.

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Six "Homestretch"

Yes, speaking for myself (and I think most of the judges in this case, if not all), I think we prefer to be more inclusive of multiple rhythmic concepts than exclusive, if that will get more interesting songs. So I would say polyrhythms, polymeters, cross-rhythms, have at it. I now have "I'm A Barbi...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Five "North Beach Vampires"

Chinese language tangent, with the qualification that I have the most minimal knowledge of Mandarin possible: This came up in conversation in our house today. As Mandarin is a language where the same word can mean different things depending on the intonation used, how does this affect melody writin...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Five "North Beach Vampires"

did the internet fail us? this is where i looked for how to pronounce it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7pwmjeBY2bA Yeah unfortunately that YT is completely wrong. I don't know who let that up there. But much like the "ts-" in Japanese, a double vowel in romanized Chinese is still one sound, not ...
