Re: Don't get pricked on all of the (Porcupine Reviews)

Sure all that’s true, and there’s also the consideration of what kind of vibrato we’re talking about, as the usual cello (for me, violin) vibrato and electric guitar vibrato are quite different techniques. The subtlety vs bigness of the vibrato, as it were, change of velocity, timing, etc. While you...

Re: Don't get pricked on all of the (Porcupine Reviews)

I liked the solo, JB, it’s just ever since I got called out by the old cat about playing long sustained notes without vibrato, I started not being able not to notice it. I tend to do no do vibrato when I’m thinking too much about what to do next, so I’m not fully in the moment and details of playing...

Hedgehogs v Porcupines would be a good terrible video game for Glenn to be #1 at.

Who is in Los Angeles?

Hey Fighters,

This is mo. I was around here for a while back in the early aughts and then I moved to a different country for like, oh, 15 years or so. Now I'm back in the US and am living in Los Angeles. Who's here? I'm looking for people to play music with!

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

I mean either way the Dual Rec has independent master volume controls for every channel, that’s one of the things it was known for, as not every amp had that back when it came out. Without actually futzing with the amp it’s a little hard to tell if it’s an amp maintenance problem, an amp design prob...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

My only note about the drummer volume thing is that if you've ever had to be on stage in an 8 person band so that you're the one who has to be next to the drummer, and your ears are more or less at cymbal level, you won't hear anything else for the next couple of days. My last keyboard player got st...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Thanks Mo and everyone. I guess I should elaborate on my use cases. Recording : no Making my 4x12 easier to manage in practice space : yes. Finding a cab or combo for infrequent gigs : yes. Enhancing my rig : no. Ok so what I'm getting from this is that you are open to any of the possibilities, whi...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

I mean the Fender Princeton 112+ is a 65 watt solid state amp, very similar topography to my old Yamaha actually so pedal boosting isn’t really going to kick it into overdrive as much as just be louder. Headroom to spare, especially if you don’t get to turn it up much

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

I mean a Muff kind of just sounds like a Muff, big and nasty, no matter where you put it so I would guess on this case it’s all about the flavor of the Muff tone as the last thing going into the clean amp rather than as a boost per se, where I usually understand that goal as boosting the tone you’re...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Well the usual order is to have delay (time based effects, to be specific, so delays and reverbs) after gain so that you are repeating the distorted sound rather than distorting the repeats. The first way is clearer repeats, the second way can be great too but you have to be a bit more careful with ...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

also, you're a delay pedal before gain guy? Interesting choice, may I ask what you like about doing it that way? Do you have the CC modulations up, and are using it kind of as chorus-y thing?

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Yeah a funny thing, in China most people don't own amplifiers, so the venues pretty much always provide backline amps, so I had to design my rigs at the time for the fact that I never knew exactly what amp I was getting on a given night. So similarly, I was getting a Fender-y clean tone from whateve...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Dude check out the Quilter Labs amps. That's my next thing to try. If they really have cracked the code for a solid state amp that can do that edge of break-up that to my knowledge only tube amps have been able to do up to this date, then it's a game changer. Their amp heads are like 2 lbs. They use...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Oh I totally have seen people try to maximize power amp distortion hahaha. Crank the volume and then set the gain to taste, theoretically that's more power amp distortion, or at least closer to the way a non-master volume (NMV) amp behaves. The problem is, by the time you get any kind of power amp d...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

(P.S. I'm certain there are aspects of the relationship between pre-amp and power-amp that I have stated incorrectly. Looking forward to more experienced heads chiming in.) Well there's quite a lot of people who have different opinions about it. Guitar tube amps are basically built to specs that ac...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Yeah, exactly, gain is how much input signal goes into the circuit to be processed by all the fairy dust, and volume is the level of the output signal, that's the simplest way to think of it. They are very different beasts in a guitar amp circuit because what kind of signal the amp circuitry sees de...
