Re: a guitar that you just don't care for

I mean, out of my electric collection, the two guitars that see the most regular recording use are my mint green partscaster (aka the sonofsupercar guitar--with all mods and parts that guitar probably cost about $700 all-in)), a $500 (used) Edwards Les Paul and a $150 Chinese Tele copy that's actual...

Re: Fixing a guitar

Well I'm a tweaker by nature so almost nothing I play is stock. The smallest mods I've done are to my Tele (compensated brass saddles) and the most to my partscaster. That one has locking auto-trim tuners, a Wilkinson VSVG trem bridge, Dimarzio 54 Pro neck and middle, Duncan JB bridge pickup with a ...

Re: a guitar that you just don't care for

For Gibson-style guitars on the less expensive side, I'm all about used Japanese guitars--Tokai, Greco, Orville, Edwards bi have an Edwards Les Paul that is actually really nice. Big, musical sustain great neck carve, long tenon. The top is probably flame maple veneer on top of a maple cap, but the ...

Re: Happily ever after...? (Grim Reality reviews)

Hi everyone! I was going to reply like a few days ago to the question of what the hell with all the "vs." stuff, but it looks like Lunkhead has already filled the vacuum. I was more pleased with the unicorn song myself overall, although I did have more guitar wankery to do on the realty so...

Re: Unscripted fairy tales. Discuss.

One time after Coltrane had taken yet another 10 minute solo, Miles Davis went up to him and asked why he couldn't keep it more concise. Coltrane told Miles that "that's how long it took to say what I had to say." Miles listened, thought about it for moment, then nodded and walked away.

Re: Remember, No Take Backs! (reviews)

I have tried to reply to this thread a bunch of times off my phone but I guess it just doesn't like posting here. It was a joy to play Anti-M's old Sigma from back in the good ol' days when we were WestCo floor mates; that guitar has aged really well tonally. My acoustic from back then hasn't aged n...

Re: Your guitar tone sucks! (guitar tone/gear talk)

Remember how I said I never bond with Teles? I found a USA G&L ASAT Special 2ndhand in one of my local guitar stores that I'm thinking about quite often. I'm not like obsessed with it yet, but I played it and a Gibson Les Paul 60th Anniversary (which was about 3 or 4 x the price) and while the L...

Re: Guitar distortion pedals

My thing about the RAT is just that it is always so THICK and loose to my ears, and I like setting up the gain pedal so it's tightened up and I can get that blade-like cutting tone on the bridge and the thick, smooth tone on the neck pickup. It requires a fair amount of balancing with the tone knobs...

And don't even get me started on amps....

But if you want an Epiphone, the price is probably better here.

Re: Recommend me a keyboard synth

Yeah, but what's made here and what's marked for export vs. domestic market are two different things. So there isn't actually a lot of available choice, especially in terms of non mass-market things like synths. I mean, for example Boss and Digitech pedals are pretty available and cheap here, but ev...

Re: Guitar distortion pedals

Although I would like to add that I really have discovered that as I get older, a lot of the time I just use the pedals for flavors; my base gain tones are more and more just based on cranking a tube amp and riding the volume knob for different gain levels. There's just something about the attack an...

Re: Recommend me a keyboard synth

Well I know I can get the GAIA in China; they sell it at the local music chain. I've been looking for other options and it looks like they are pretty hard to get out here, so I might need to wait until the next time I'm in a musical instrument-friendly country. There are plenty of keyboards here but...

Re: Guitar distortion pedals

Yeah with the Fuzz Factory I usually have it set with the Stab ALL the way down and the Compression up just to the point the noise goes away when my volume knob is about a 7 or 8. Then season Drive to taste. That gets you the oscillation in a controllable way, as you have it full on if you kick your...

Re: Recommend me a keyboard synth

Ok, I'm interested and will look about a bit for one in China. I know that I can get my hands on the Roland Gaia, which actually appeals to me the most right now just because its interface is knobs and sliders and not so many menus, which is just more intuitive for an old codger like myself.

Re: Guitar distortion pedals

I don't have a TC Electronic dirt pedal, but I do have the Vortex Flanger, Hall of Fame Reverb and Flashback Delay and they are all great, GREAT pedals (and not too expensive nowadays, either!). I am especially a fan of the Vortex because it has a really good sim of a through-zero flanger on it, and...

Recommend me a keyboard synth

I've always been a terrible keyboard player. When I was 9 I had piano lessons for 6 months and the teacher eventually told my parents, "just leave him with the violin. He just doesn't get piano." So, a few decades later, I'm looking to get back in the saddle here with a keyboard synth, som...

Re: Your guitar tone sucks! (guitar tone/gear talk)

By the by, remember how months ago I said I was in love with Jaguars? I've played every Jag I've come across in a music store and I have bonded with a total of zero of them. I don't know why, but when I actually play it, it doesn't sit right on my body and I never feel comfortable with it, not the w...

Re: Your guitar tone sucks! (guitar tone/gear talk)

Since the last time I posted here, I've picked up a couple new interesting guitars and of course modded them. I know no other place I can talk about them where there's a minute chance someone might be interested, so here I guess is where it will all go. The first one is a this: http://www.avianguita...

Re: 10th Annual Gift of Music

I do find it a little funny that you would recognize hearing that style before, I don't think I've been contributing enough to SF or other things recently that anyone would pick up on my playing. Actually, I didn't know it was you. But back when we were talking about guitar tone, I found out you di...
