Re: Spin Tunes 20 Round 3 Challenge - Self Improvement

Some quick thoughts on the Round 3 entries. Don't expect any great insight - I just appreciate the people who took the time to give feedback on the enormous early rounds and want to return the favour. I'm assuming no one here is too thin-skinned, since we're all throwing our songs up on the net to b...

Re: Watch this, guys (Bunny Hop reviews)

Possum Sauce : The vocal could be cleaner, less muddy. Well, the whole track, I guess. But I like this guitar bit and the melody and your vocal delivery. This kind of reminds me of some of Tim's entries (The Pannacotta Army) which is maybe why I feel more critical of the less clean mix than I think...

Re: Watch this, guys (Bunny Hop reviews)

Berkeley Social Scene - BSS songs always seem to give real thought to structure. Good twist here, with the emphasis on verse and pre-chorus, the chorus itself almost an afterthought. Not a huge fan of that autotuney effect on the vocals. The pre-chorus bit is my favourite, with that switch to the h...

Had to sit out the last round because I finally managed to get the Covids. Hopping back in with some croaky folk.

Nice one, Gil. Cheers all.

Honestly wasn't expecting a 40 second uke song to do well. You're weird, Songfight.

Re: Road-rash is a badge of honor (Thrasher reviews)

Possum Sauce - Are the individual tracks slightly off-time? Specifically that (albeit lovely) keyboard doesn't quite line up apart from the choruses. Nice lyrical take on "Thrash" BTW. Yeah, this slightly wonky timings (that might just be in my head, anyway) are fine. Cheers. Yeah, the ti...

Re: Road-rash is a badge of honor (Thrasher reviews)

BSS - Inventive take on the theme. I like the 'tired all the time' section in particular, sets up the chorus nicely. Vocal sounds good on chorus and pre-chorus, maybe doesn't sit so well in the mix during the verses - could just be a competing frequencies thing. Gaping Maw - Thrash half and funky la...

Re: I've got a small problem with (A Very Large Man reviews)

Yeah, some good stuff in this batch. Haven't found time for proper feedback this week, but will try to get some done next round. Do you remember a kids' show called Lift Off? It had a weird premise, a creepy protagonist and I was too old for it, but your song has bits that pleasantly remind me of th...

Re: Stupidkeyboardisn'tworkingcorrectly (Space Bar reviews)

Berkeley Social Scene - I like the light and shade here. Great moment when the chunky rock riffing peels back and leaves the mellow bass. The vocal delivery is about a billion percent more angsty than the lyrics - doesn't detract but feels like an odd choice. Duncan Martin - Very likeable. That thir...

Re: Soap and water for the (Marked Man reviews)

Congratulations, Army and Uniform! Tough title to sing, but a good variety of takes. Some late notes while listening: Agony Sauce - The verses stay interesting with the guitar fx and underwater burbling, but it's in the later parts where this really flies. Love the shifts in the 'sure enough' sectio...

Congrats BSS & JTH! Cheers to Jeff, Piña Colada Armpits, Adam, Paco and Duncan for the reviews. Some good songs around here.

Re: Bark at the (Full Moon On Friday reviews)

Thanks for the reviews, all! Enjoyable fight. A few quick thoughts from me: Banda de Luchadores Melodiosos - The extremely 80s synth in the intro had me expecting a very different kind of song. Arrangement has a lot of movement but manages to keep a spacious, lonely feel. Nice work. Good harmonies o...

Nice fight! Congrats all. And thanks for the detailed reviews. (Yeah, agreed, there was some sloppy timing on my song - it was a bit of a rush job. And apologies for any Billy Joel PTSD.) Sorry, didn't find time to do reviews myself. Possum Sauce - I feel like I should know who’s behind this cause y...

It's a tie! Tom Skillman and Possom Sauce (typo to be fixed soon, I promise) win!
Cheers, Lunkhead. It's actually Possum Sauce (with a u) in case there's been a mix-up.

Nice fight, and thanks to everyone for the detailed reviews. Really interesting to get all these perpectives. Here are some quick notes from me, but don't take anything the wrong way - I rarely know what I'm talking about. Cybronica - Great singing, and that switch to solo voice is a beautiful momen...

Yeah, a great batch of songs. Five on my list after first listen. jb, you're absolutely right about the EQ. Had to mix my entry on headphones, and when I listened later on speakers I had the same thought. Rudedawg, it's a virtual bull fiddle, I'm afraid. Thanks for the feedback, all. Much appreciated.
