Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Five "The Only Way Out"

C4D929B2-364C-436A-BAB7-4E406F948367.gif Yawn. If I’d known you didn’t know what you wanted I might have had time to make a better song. Instead, I bugged the heck out of Cybronica for her educated opinion on music theory. I knew I would get panned for only having 2 hours to record. I considered no...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Five "The Only Way Out"

However, you establish the key of C and then go up to Gm in both chords and melody. That's an upward modulation in my book. When you bike up and down a hill, and someone asks “did you bike down that hill?” do you say “no! I only biked up!”? I don’t really anticipate making it through this round for...

Re: Nur Ein XVI - The Only Way Out

Challenge: My verse is in C and my chorus is in Gm. The transition back to C involves Adim -> D7 -> C. Which is downward. I hope you didn’t mean to specify something else that isn’t a technical definition of modulation! Verse After years of repeating the same mistakes You’re convinced there is no es...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Three "Pleasant Row"

Thanks, judges, furrypedro, Tommy G, and everyone else who's shared their reaction to this song. I had no idea it would catch on. My wife has been singing "NEIN! WE ROW!" all week. At first I was going to do some lame Penny Lane inspired song and toss in some foreign lyrics - probably French. When C...

omg. I read that whole thread and it was hilarious. Mean as hell but the insults were pretty funny. Haven’t read it in years… wow, that was hilarious! …in retrospect. Y’know, new people come around and think these forums can be heated… but today it’s mostly friendly jabs compared to back then. We’v...

And I don't mind telling you guys, if I'd been a judge that year, I'd have made the same call.

Oh good, I was concerned I wouldn’t have a reason to bring up the villanelle incident this year.

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Two "Drag Me Around"

Well, that's adorable. You never said 1890s! I love subpar Bertolt Brecht pastiches and you nailed it. I don't know if this is sarcasm or not, but I sincerely thank you for having more than "I forgot to listen to this song and now I forgot I listened to this song". FWIW I did have a post-grunge son...

I’ve been enjoying the challenges this year. They strike the right balance between difficult and inspiring. Good work, judges!

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Two "Drag Me Around"

The intro of my song is the riff from round 0 morphed into the new song. The outro of my song is the part of the field recording that comes before the start of my round 1 song. Lyrically, the narrative goes along with round 0 and round 1. Genre-wise, it's a good in-between song for a modern album, a...

Re: Nur Ein XVI - Drag Me Around

This song (attempts to?) bridges round 0 and round 1 both lyrically and sonically. You better take Or you’ll be taken You better speak Or you’ll be spoken to You better wake Or you’ll be woken up Just like me from the firey cackles of hell They’ve been dragging me around Making me do their bidding T...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round One "Pareidolia"

I wrote a song inspired by my daily walks and so I took a walk with my FIELD RECORDING EQUIPMENT to gather some AUDIO for insertion into this SONG MUSIC TRACK. It's a subtle, boring take but I hope the track makes up for it (J$'s narration voice: it doesn't)

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Zero "Semiprecious"

it was made from a semiprecious stone, lapis lazuli Wow. My first idea was to write a song about lapis lazuli rosary beads. Paint derived from the stone was traditionally used to depict Mother Mary. Whiteley died from a heroin overdose in the early 90s, and the way he talked about ultramarine had t...

Re: Nur Ein XVI: Round Zero "Semiprecious"

I made a song. Songs have repeating elements. I made sure to gradually emphasize some of my many repeating elements.

The song is about someone who profits from disassembling precious things. Ergo, “semiprecious” is wordplay.

I hope this matching criteria is sufficient to make it to round 1.

Re: Modern democracy (was: COVID-19 freakout thread)

Trump was entertaining. Lots of good quotes. But I’m glad that show got cancelled.

Biden’s Inauguration was off the hook and I am more than pleased by the messaging.

Caravan Ray, didn’t you bet me that we wouldn’t have a government by now?
