Re: Book yours now! (A Doom With A View prefight)

My friend, who was supposed to come over to sing and play guitar, canceled three times. Thus, you're stuck with an old school Lichen Throat arrangement that was intended to be the demo, though I was fairly happy with it. Is there a tradition of musicians being flaky? I don't think I've had a single ...

A Doom with a View by Lichen Throat Saturday morning in bed: Sleep still lingers in my head. I hear your sweet voice, but I can’t make out what you said. Start to feel a gentle shake. It’s just a little earthquake, Barely enough to get me fully awake. Wander barefoot down the hall, Past our photos ...

Re: Time to Sing your Predictions of the Future (Sing of the Times Reviews)

Why does everyone sound like it’s 1975? I wonder if the title provided a subconscious impulse to evoke a particular style of music. Berkeley Social Scene—The bass line is a highlight here. I’m not wild about the vocal melody in the bridge, but the guitar solo is nice. Overall, it’s a little too 70s ...

Re: Time to post some (inter)stellar (The Thirteenth Moon Reviews)

Berkeley Social Scene—My favorite aspect of this song is the combination of percussion and guitar rhythm, which is done very well. Nice mix, pleasant vocals. My attention is not fully seized, but there’s nothing that stands out negatively, either. If I listened to this 20 more times, I can imagine t...

Re: Tuning Vocals in Post

Thanks, JB and Pigfarmer, for the explanations. It seems like you're saying slightly different things, though. I understand JB to mean "start on the same note (C) and move up using differing patterns (depending on what mode is chosen) of whole and half steps." I understand Pigfarmer to mean "start o...

Re: Tuning Vocals in Post

For the "Notes In Scale" (the list of notes between "Pull to fixed pitch" and "Correction strength") it says "-1" means "not in the scale", "0" means "in the scale", and "1" mean "in the scale and snapped toward". Seems slightly confusing. Do you only ever have 0's and -1's in there and not 1's? Al...

I've been using Ardour for the last several months. Here's an example of what the two built in pitch correction control interfaces look like.

Re: Let's all sit down and read (Poetry In The Streets Reviews)

I apologize for the late reviews. Lots of traveling, etc. I’ve slept in three time zones this week. Berkeley Social Scene—Nothing wrong with this song, but it doesn’t seize my interest. I think a more energetic percussion arrangement might have been desirable. The guitar playing is very good, as is ...

Re: Tuning Vocals in Post

I can't help but think that this might be at least partially aimed at me. I don't have any compunction about pitch correction, but I don't seem to be very good at using it. I have tried it several times, but it always seems to sound overly electronic. The only time it made it onto the finished mix w...

Be forewarned: I'm attempting to play a guitar--for the first time ever--on this week's entry. Also, I think I've set a personal record for highest density of allusions.

Re: Red Warrior Needs Reviews Badly (Blue Woman Yes reviews)

Wow, with the exception of mine, everyone’s songs sound so professional this week. This is a really strong fight; probably the highest percentage of songs I’ve ever voted for. Berkeley Social Scene—The vocal sounds good, as do the guitars. I like the contrast between the verses and the chorus. Solid...

Re: Automatic songs, automatic reviews (Yes, You're A Robot reviews)

Berkeley Social Scene—I think I’d like a higher density of percussion notes; it might make the song seem faster without actually increasing the tempo. In general, though, this is a solid, enjoyable song. It’s also among the better BSS vocal performances, in my opinion. glennny—This reminds me of Pin...

Re: Where's The Shredder for the (Tearing Down History Reviews)

Lichen Throat - This is really quite compelling. Your vocal is working with the music for me this time. I've been playing around with this on my guitar today because I wanted to get a better handle on its construction. I think it'd be neat if the final time through the chorus it ended on an A major...
