Re: New Music Friday - 10/18/19

I had a listen to the Hovvdy album which is pretty solid in a way that made me nostalgic for bands I listened to in the early 00s like Wheat, Lowgold and Sparklehorse. Planning to check out Caroline Polachek and Nils Frahm at some point but I've been listening to the heavy, heavy hits over at Songfi...

Also, is that really how you pronounce "Barbara" in England? If so I am SHOOK and I'm not even named Barbara.
Uh... No, actually. I hadn't actually noticed until now how weirdly I'm pronouncing Barbara there. Apologies to all Barbs!

Re: You won't believe what happened next (Long Story Short Reviews)

Vom Vorton I feel like this could be a track on 69 Love Songs by The Magnetic Fields. Wow, thank you! I take that as an extremely high compliment! Vom Vorton -- I mentioned the four-chord structure in the Third Cat review. Here it is again, maybe even in the same key. This is the problem. Those cho...

I listened to Richard Dawson and Kim Gordon. Both interesting. Both need more listens.

Re: You won't believe what happened next (Long Story Short Reviews)

Absolutely Credible - I kinda agree with comments above that this sounds great but the song under the production isn't particularly memorable (and also about the vocals having some of the Casablancas about them). The catchy bits of lead guitar and the song's general vibe are enough to make it a sol...

Congrats, Heavyset Lingo!

Meanwhile I've gotten 9 votes for three fights in a row, so I'm awarding myself a trophy for consistency. Everybody likes consistency!

Re: Artist interrupts new single with an ad

This is what I find enraging. Absolutely enRAGING . Also they still do the garbage "play count pooling" thing that Spotify does. Pay $10/month for Apple Music, stream nothing but Octothorpe, most of the music goes to bands that aren't Octothorpe. Looks like Deezer are having a go at a fairer system...

Re: Gristle in my teeth and a (Pocket Full Of Bones reviews)

Haven't had the time to listen quite as much to this fight as I usually would, but wanted to get some reviews written while I have a little time to spare. Balance Lost - all the ingredients of classic BL are here, but for some reason this doesn't quite work for me like I want it to. Maybe that's bec...

Re: New Music Friday - 9/27/19

I listened to Tough Crowd by Nervus. Really good punk rock, with super-chunky guitars.

Was planning to check out a bunch of other things on a long train ride but got sidetracked by podcasts. But on my list were:
New Pornographers
65daysofstatic
Moon Duo
Tegan and Sara
Telefon Tel Aviv

G&G = guy / girl and guitar

Shorthand for bare bones singer-songwriter stuff which often struggles against the bigger productions.

Congrats to the Jerks and good to see the podcast back! I'm on holiday at the moment so I'll probably save it for the journey home.

Vom Vorton VOTE! The vwoooom vwooooms are making me very happy. Please make more raps. I'm pretty jealous of people who can rap, as my accent precludes it. Thank you! I'm back in a sort of new-wavey comfort zone for the next fight but I will consider it, I really like writing twisty lyrics with int...

Fly Pan Am have a new album out today, their first in 15 years. Big news if anyone else was massively into Canadian experimental rock / Constellation records in the early 00s! I had a listen and there's a surprising amount of death metal screaming on it, which I did not expect. Enjoyed it though. Li...

Re: Aquaman

I thought it was fun, especially when it turned into a treasure hunt movie. After a bunch of comic book movies that take themselves Very Seriously recently I enjoyed seeing one where an octopus played the drums and Dolph Lundgren was the king of the fish people.

Re: The Stars Are Melting! (Liquid Starshine Reviews)

Chthauhaus - this is solid, but a little repetive and minimal for me, and I'm not crazy about the lead guitar sound (does it start out as a real guitar and then change to a synth guitar later on, or do my ears deceive me?). I do like the chunky bass and rhythm guitar though, it just kinda feels lik...

Re: New Music Friday - 9/13/19

I listened to a bit of Metronomy and Charli XCX last night, I was enjoying Metronomy until about seven or eight tracks into the album where the energy levels seriously dropped and didn't seem to recover. I exercised my "four bad tracks in a row and I'm out rule" that I just made up, and switched. Ch...

I listened to a bunch of stuff on Friday, most of it good, nothing really blew me away though. Probably my two favourites: Gruff Rhys - Pang! The Utopia Strong (spacy modular synth-prog band with snooker champion Steve Davis in the band!) Also checked out: (Sandy) Alex G - House of Sugar Maybe Don't...

Had a first listen on my lunch break, this is a cracking fight! I'll write some reviews once I've had some more listens, but particularly loving the Don Mattingly's Mustache track - really good stuff.
