Re: A Grand Parade
Vom Vorton every time I close my eyes, I see disaster and I’m crossing all my fingers it’s not too late but everything just seems to keep on happening faster no matter how hard we stamp on the brakes and when we raise our voices they change the laws to spite us but if we throw a party then they won...

Just wanting to make it clear that you can't randomly draft the majority of the world onto your side of the argument like that.

Vom Vorton my baby joined an e-bike gang I voted no, she went against my will my baby joined an e-bike gang now I can’t follow her uphill she says she doesn’t want me meddling I can’t tell if she’s really pedalling, any more my baby joined an e-bike gang but I don’t trust the technology yet my baby...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII Round Six "Question Mark"
Cavedwellers - good song, particularly the catchy chorus. Mix feels a bit muddy, the vocal in particular gets a little buried at times. Lyrically, I'm a little mixed - some of the "answering" here feels a little... patronising? But the rhythms / rhymes / word choices in the chorus are fun...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII Round Five "Choose Your own Adventure"
Crazy tough rankings at this point. Stuff I don't like in the songs I like best, stuff I think is great in the ones that don't quite work for me. Good work on fully getting into the challenge, everyone! Cavedwellers - I have some issues with this one but the energy and great brass arrangement mostly...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII, Round Four: "Partly Fiction"
Sorry if these reviews are a little grumpier and more perfunctory than usual, I've been in so many long meetings already this week and it's sucking my will to live. Berkeley Social Scene - this is fine but there are a bunch of other songs here that are more than fine and I can't hear anything here t...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII, Round Three: "Co-Pilot"
I don't really like guitar solos and will often go to great lengths to avoid them..! Is that weird for a guitar player? Probably! Massive high five! I really think guitar solos should be deployed extremely sparingly and the fact that many SF / NE entrants include them in every song is a continued p...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII, Round Three: "Co-Pilot"
Getting really hard to rank now! There were things I liked about all of these, some very tough decisions. Berkeley Social Scene - why does this remind me of Boffo Yux Dudes? Something about the energy and nerdy lyrics sends my brain immediately in that direction. The energy is great and the chorus i...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII, Round Four: "Partly Fiction"
Clarification time! When I think of a "list song," one of the first examples that comes to my mind is TMBG's "Money for Dope." That one surely would qualify - the entire lyric is just a long weird rider list (or a list of things one could sell for dope.) Another TMBG example of ...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII, Round Two: "The Numbers Don't Lie"
Berkeley Social Scene - I think this is my favourite of the BSS songs from this Nur Ein so far, it has a good energy and the rhythmic twistiness of the lyrics is fun. The verse melody feels a little awkward to me, but the pre-chorus and chorus work well enough that I don't think it's a big criticis...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII, Round Three: "Co-Pilot"
Guest should sing lead, main contestant is welcome to sing BVs / harmonies etc.
Anything else, you take the usual risks with five judges ranking as they see fit.
edit: feel free to recruit more than one guest, if you feel ambitious!

Re: Nur Ein XVIII, Round Two: "The Numbers Don't Lie"
Personally I'm going to be ignoring the chord progression entirely and listening for sounds of royalty and road noises. So - as long as I can use the recording of that time Print Harry farted in the street as I drove past Windsor Castle - I'm good to go? Yep, and I'm just pencilling your name in at...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII, Round One: "Blind Spot"
Berkeley Social Scene - a frustrating song! The percussion in the intro sounds really cool and then it drops out until late in the song, leaving a very by-the-numbers BSS track that stretches out to almost five minutes including an instrumental section after the solo where nothing interesting is ha...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII, Round Zero: "Sink or Swim"
The accompaniment at the start (and all the way through, although less noticeably) was a Casio PT-80 that I've had since the mid-80s. It makes quite a cool, if slightly limited, sound. Hell yeah. I have a PT-30 and I do love a lot of those sounds. My shadow for Blind Spot has a few tracks of MT-65 ...

Re: Nur Ein XVIII Round 1 - Blind Spot
Blind Spot by Vom Vorton In with a shadow for this round! I used egg shaker, tambourine and wood block. The song is about the period in my early 20s where I was drinking far too much in a semi-successful attempt to combat social anxiety. Which is unfortunately harder to pull off in your 40s so mayb...
