Re: Aarararrrargh! (Screaming Into the Void reviews)

I'm bummed that I ended up sitting this fight out, because if I hadn't it would have been LOADED with saxophones and it would have been fun to watch you twitch. I like what you do with your horns! Solo alto sax is just the worst sound in the world to me. I ran sound at a jazz/blues club for 3 years...

Interesting fight! Weird abundance of saxophones! Add, Balls to Monte, Pannacotta Army, and Robyn Mackenzie brought the goods.

Re: And now you see (How It Comes Apart reviews)

Night Sky : Oh hey it’s the sax guy and he’s really kicking ass on the sax yet again. Is that a soprano sax for the back half of the solo? It sounds great! That was a generally pleasant listen -- I had no idea who the characters that you were talking about were. I googled “Ollie and Lilly” and got ...

Re: A long four years

I'd be more on board with a split government if one side wasn't going to just stymie everything for the sake of stymieing everything. The GOP doesn't seem interested in good governance, even if they're in charge, but certainly not if someone else is in charge. Then their singular focus is getting b...

Re: Don't wink at me (Eyes In The Dark reviews)

Night Sky - Oh! A different vibe. Swanky lounge time. Is that real bari sax? Tuba? This seems well recorded. I didn't expect a smooth big band type thing on here. There is something disconnected here structurally that I can't quite put my finger on. I like the weird chords. Ah! Damn listen to that ...

Another newish player

Hi all, I've been entering songs pretty steadily for the last few months, but I thought I'd introduce myself properly (anything to distract from the pandemic, election uncertainty, and the confirmation that about half of my country-people support a lying, preening, fascist, racist, misogynist etc.)....

How it Comes Apart - Night Sky Ollie makes his world with Perfect logic His own physics a little magic Heroes fitted With fire and wind To save the world He’s making it up, the same as you We’ll never know if the whole thing’s true We’ll never know how it comes apart Just like him, I follow my hear...

Re: Just like that (How it Comes Apart prefight)

In. Completely forgot about the challenge, so I'll just say that there are more guitar parts in this one than usual for me, and guitars are not intended to be played by saxophone players. OK, that's a little weak. We couldn't bear to write a song about how democracy or the world comes apart under th...

Re: Don't wink at me (Eyes In The Dark reviews)

Thanks for the thoughtful reviews! This actually started with the concept of something like Shore Leave by Tom Waits, with a spoken verse and sung chorus, but I didn't end up feeling like I could pull off the spoken word thing. My wife went down a YouTube hole and came out with some Nick Cave inspir...

Re: Don't wink at me (Eyes In The Dark reviews)

add - Synthy bits a little too 80s MIDI for my taste, but solid arrangement, and I really like the vocal melodies. Amby Moho - Nice pop sensibility in this one, good melodies. Relaxed, maybe a little too rhythmically loose for the style (as if I’m one to talk). Balls to Monte - Optimistic take on th...

Re: Don't wink at me (Eyes In The Dark reviews)

Night Sky - I'm getting an interesting mix of Sinatra and The Doors for some reason-- I think it's mainly from those horns and jazzy drums. I want to hear your vocals better, I like the lyrics and wish I could hear them clearly. Haha, I think Sinatra + The Doors = Nick Cave, which is what we were l...

Re: Did you see that?! (Eyes in the Dark prefight)

In, just barely on time, a bit light on spooky sounds but heavy on spooky murder lyrics from my wife and lyricist. Rhumba beats from Steve, who has become a regular Night Sky feature.

Eyes in the Dark - Night Sky She leaned over the bannister that night As he lay sprawled across the marble floor Like an old bear rug placed carelessly By the cleaning crew as an afterthought. She looked lovely, her hair curled around Her chin, her scarlet lips a perfect oval Around her shock white...

Re: Hold your breath for (The Smoke Is Rolling In reviews)

add : Bonus points for toad percussion, not just toad-shaped, but toad-sounding. Or is that just a guiro? Anyway, it sounds like a toad, which is inspired for the throat wrecking air quality of late. Nice melodies and lyrics, and I like how all the pieces fit together. Alchemy feat. Copernicus : Go...

Re: Hold your breath for (The Smoke Is Rolling In reviews)

Night Sky Do I smell a Chris Wood fan here? Really good performance, but the mix its a tad off. The rhythm section should definitely be louder, but you definitely got something great here. Wow, thanks. I must admit that I don't know Chris Wood, but I'll check him out. This started with lyrics writt...

Re: Don't breathe (The Smoke Is Rolling In prefight)

In, once again with better drums than I could have mustered from drummer friend Steve. I didn't run out and get a thumb piano, but I used my dumpster-rescued Korg T1's kalimba voice, so I kinda half-assed the main challenge. Ran my soprano sax through a Cry Baby for the side challenge.

The Smoke is Rolling In - Night Sky You strut up tight so complacent Sizzling with anticipation got your red hot victory dress You know everybody so impressed Dazzled by your own gleaming shine Fuck all those you have left behind It’s a blue fire long overdue It’s a blue fire and it’s coming for you...

Re: If we make it (Better Luck Next Year reviews)

Lots of great songs this week! add : Catchy and fun tune, juxtaposed with clever and appropriately 2020 lyrics. Enjoyed this. Balls To Monte : Pretty rockin’ fuck you to 2020. Dig it. Brown Word and the Big Whine : I always enjoy your lyrics, and this is no exception. We don’t need no doomsday hucks...

Re: Graphite vs Charcoal (Let's Call It A Draw reviews)

Thanks for the welcoming words and hints, Sober. I'd be happy to be hit up for horns. I came here in large part to motivate myself to learn to arrange horn parts. Re: punching in and compositing takes, I'm definitely aware, but I'm very much on the steep part of the learning curve. For my first thre...
