Re: Circle of Titles 2022?

All right, I've gotten more titles. With fluffy officially bowing out, that leaves one holdout who expressed interest but hasn't submitted titles yet. I've reached out to that person individually, and I'll give until the end of today, before I send out the assignments. Thanks y'all!

Re: Circle of Titles 2022?

Bump. I said I would distribute the titles yesterday, but as of right now, I actually only have submissions from three participants. If you're interested, let me know your titles as soon as possible, and I'll get them out there!

Re: Circle of Titles 2022?

All right, I gave it a week and we have: myself Phlub Pigfarmer was a maybe, but since the titles definitely won't be assigned before August 15th, probably a no? Note that the deadline for this is typically pretty lenient, so T.C. let me know if you're able to reconsider fluffy was a maybe Lichen Th...

Re: Circle of Titles 2022?

I'm sorry to hear about your dad. May his memory forever be a blessing. I'm a maybe on CoT. Thanks, fluffy. He left a big legacy and a very large number of sad friends. So far, we're at three yeses and a maybe. I'd want the circle to be a little bigger if I'm going to run the sidefight. Or if Circl...

Circle of Titles 2022

Traditionally, I've run a side fight called Circle of Titles shortly after Nur Ein. The timing is a little messed up this year because my father passed away around that time, but I'm back in town, feeling a little more up to things, and wondering if there's any interest in spinning up that circle ag...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Three "Can't Let It Go"

Holy cow, you guys. "Plan A" didn't sound very good. "Plan B" fell through. I had some good friends help me with a last-minute "Plan C" while I also salvaged some pieces of "Plan A." That means that attributing all my guests is going to be a mouthful. First, f...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Three "Can't Let It Go"

My "Plan A" fell through, so I'm scrambling here. On the bright side, my lyrics were finished (like, all the way finished) on Wednesday afternoon, which is about three and a half days faster than my average for rounds 0-2. And also on the bright side, I'm sticking with the same song idea ...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Two "Floating In the Water"

Jon Porobil - this is really fun, appreciate the energy you bring to the vocals. i really liked the alternate lyrics in the reverb thing you mention in the lyrics thread, but I can't hear that *at all* when listening to the song. i'd love to see something done that actually surfaces that material. ...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Two "Floating In the Water"

I'm sorry to see Night Sky drop out. Your first couple of songs this year showed a ton of improvement and promise, and I had been looking forward to seeing what you did next. On a first listen, Elks of the Economy are a clear favorite. I also loved Stacking Theory . The "solved it!" award ...

Re: Nur Ein XVII Round Two - Floating in the Water

My song lyrics might be a bit inscrutable, so I've included this "cheat sheet" here if you'd like to use it. I recommend at least trying to listen without the help first, but hopefully this will clarify if you're confused. Cheat sheet The lyrics of my song switch without warning from time ...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Two "Floating In the Water"

Pretty sure I'm in. Apologies to Niveous or whomever is checking the email, because I sent two files within a minute of each other, both just BARELY under the deadline. The first was an empty mp3 file, thanks to an annoying glitch in my DAW. The other is my entry, in relatively polished condition. S...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Two "Floating In the Water"

I'm on my third song idea, and third time feeling like scrapping it all and trying again. This happened to me in Nur Ein XV, Round 3, "Rear Window." I managed to salvage it into arguably my best recording ever up to that point. I believe in you! Plus, I also scrapped two ideas and started...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"

Congrats to Moss Palace and Stacking Theory. Again my favorite of the round came in 2nd. Go figure! I liked almost all your songs. Even the two eliminated competitors upped their game considerably between rounds 0 and 1; this round gave us the best Lichen Throat song I've heard yet. I probably won't...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"

Here’s that song the Jon Porobil guitar line reminds me of: rx6Zgz0TZuA Oof, busted. Yeah, it was one of those moments where I realized I was drawing from an influence pretty closely, but instead of reworking the idea, I just leaned into it. The similarity is undeniable, but I was hoping my song wa...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Zero "Friday the 13th"

I promised some reviews - here ya go! Adam Adamant - Silly lyrics. The combination of silly and macabre reminds me of The Smiths - that guitar tone doesn't hurt either! I think the EQ/filter treatment on the lead vocal is a bit too heavy-handed. In the ending section, around the two-minute mark, I'm...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"

Well, okay. I don't hate my entry, but I'm frustrated that I never really had that "aha" moment. But hey, it's early going yet. For ease of reference, here's the palindrome in my song: My musical palindrome is limited to the solo in the bridge, but it's long (38 notes) and it has two other...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"

Any instrument or track. However, I will be looking for a complete phrase. For example: an 8 beat measure with 6 being palindromic and 2 completing the phrase does *not* qualify. Oh boy, now that really muddies the water. Musical phrases can start on a downbeat, right? Or end on an upbeat? This que...

Re: Nur Ein X-Seven

Hey everyone, I think it is time to be honest with myself. I am struggling to keep up with this year's Nur Ein. This past October, I left a job that I had for one day short of 21 years to venture into a new job. Sure, I had left a toxic toxic place but my new job is no cakewalk. It ended up being a...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round One "Deified"

Arguably the most famous example in pop music is the bass solo from Paul Simon's "You Can Call Me Al." Half of it is played normally and the other half is the same recording backwards. (It's at time code 3:44 in this video): uq-gYOrU8bA There are also some great examples in the Spintunes r...
