Re: My Life

That is an awesome story. I was expecting it to end with your guitar in flames, or otherwise damaged by proximity to a fire. The cat puke was an unexpected twist. A+

Re: Top Scientists: Pop Music is Getting Worse

Of course, the real issue with all these "scientific" studies "proving" that music is awful now is that they ignore any kind of social/economic analysis and treat "music" as a huge monolithic entity. For instance, it's easy to record and disseminate music on your own n...

Re: Top Scientists: Pop Music is Getting Worse

2. Simpler and louder I see this Spanish study get cited a lot in online arguments about the decline of pop music and I still don't like it. Their thesis is basically that newer music has less variation in pitch and timbre, and is louder than music of the past (they go back to 1955). Here's the pap...

Re: Top Scientists: Pop Music is Getting Worse

That is really sad. My "old man" opinion is that MTV put pop music on a bad path to cementing image over music. Digital production techniques made it all too easy to pour autotune and brickwall limiting etc. all over everything. (Similar to how so many movies get digitally color graded to ...

Kong: Skull Island

I watched this for free on a plane. It was so dumb, oh man. The Kong CGI bits though were kind of awesome. Also it did manage to capture a bit of the kind of fun of old 80s action movies like Predator, in that you don't know who's going to get killed at any moment.

Table 19

I watched this for free on a plane, expecting it to be a super dumb comedy with terrible jokes. It actually turned out to be a pretty decent comedy with a lot of good characterization and acting.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Very fun and entertaining, in spite of a lot of superfluous and hokey stuff. I guess that's pretty much any good Star Wars movie.

Most anticipated albums of 2018?

Does anybody still listen to albums anymore? Anyway, maybe some of you know of some artists who've got new albums set for release this year. I know Jenny Lewis has been recording for a while now, I'm hoping her new album comes out this year.

Fun-A-Day 2018

Every January is "Fun-A-Day", a global event for which people resolve to make art every day in January. Jonathan Mann got started doing his "Song-A-Day" project for Fun-A-Day in 2009 and he's still going! I started trying to just make any kind of music every day for Fun-A-Day two...

Re: New Year's Resolutions?

So here we are, 2014. How did everybody do last year? I don't have resolutions from last year to review, so I guess I'll just make some for this year. 1. Do some money related stuff I should be doing but am not 2. Do some health related stuff I should be doing but am not 3. Trade in my 15 year old ...

Songs posted. Unfortunately the Macaque Attack song was nowhere to be found in the fightmaster inbox for some reason. I DM'd about it and will add it to the fight as soon as I get it.

Re: We gave them up (Our Forfeited Friends prefight)

I have been away visiting family. I brought my work laptop in case I needed to deal with any work emergencies. I thought I had what I needed on this laptop to be able to update Song Fight but it has turned out that I do not. I've made a couple short attempts at it and this morning I had time to spen...

Just write an "Our Forfeited Friends" entry and submit it late. I probably won't have time to update the site for a day or two still at this point.

Yeah, the conclusion is an epic amazing payout!! I loved his different voices and styles for everybody, particularly JB, Spud, and Caravan Ray.

Re: I Fall Into the Songfight Gap

I was listening to a stream of random songs from the archive and Jim of Seattle's "Get A Life" came up. http://sfjukebox.org/songs/get_a_life/Jim%20of%20Seattle It references this thread! I wonder if that's the only time anybody's done that...? I came here to read the discussion, and to sa...

Re: Song Fight! Jukebox

I forgot about this, but, if you want to listen to a stream of random songs from the Song Fight archives, you can do that on the Jukebox: http://sfjukebox.org/players/xspf/songs/random/10 That will open a Flash player (you may have to tell your browser to allow Flash) that will load and play 10 rand...

Re: Don't have a cow! (Sacred Coward Reviews)

There's a form I use to post the results, and it tabulates the votes at the time that I load the form. So there is only a very very brief window between when I load that page and when I submit the form where new votes could come in and not wind up being counted. We don't really get enough votes, or ...
