Re: Be careful, they might have pens (Je Suis Charlie review
Berkeley Social Scene Maybe it's the headphone listening, or the to me whiney style (you're in the company of some big alt-rock bands there), but I find the vocals rather buried behind the guitars; less so in the chorus. In the end I don't quite get the point. But the French+instrumental bridge is ...

Re: Be careful, they might have pens (Je Suis Charlie review
I'm also interpreting (maybe misinterpreting) the lyrics as an atheistic screed, which is right up my alley. Glad to hear it. That's about right, Occam's razor etc. The point was not so much to argue for that (worthy though it is), but to explore the '(perceived) insult argument' from an oft-ignore...

Je suis Charlie by Nu igen! (with translation of the French parts) Any talk of the supernatural in a non-metaphorical way insults my intelligence -- but if you must, then pray But don't you raise your index at me as you lay down the capitalized Word because I have a friendly middle finger I can't s...

Re: to buy or not to buy: 2nd hand Welson Comet electronic organ
Bought it! :D There were dead spiders inside, now it's working great save for two volume sliders that only lead to sound in a few positions, not over the whole range. (Any ideas to fix that? You're talking to an electronics novice.) Feels pretty solid, sounds are very acceptable, the "Magic Ban...

to buy or not to buy: 2nd hand Welson Comet electronic organ
Hi folks, Browsing a second-hand shop, I chanced upon a vintage electronic organ, made by Welson (Italy), type "Comet". It's only £20 and it's supposed to work fine (just a bit chipped at one end, but that's mere cosmetics). However it's a big heavy thing and with not much room I'm not sur...

MixMeister BPM analyzer
More of a DJ tool, but also useful to build a song around a non-metronomed take. Simple & free.
Note: it gives the average bpm of a track; if you have tempo changes chop up the mp3 at the change points and feed the parts to the app.

You don't need to understand a language to listen to its music. Often it just has a peculiar sound which is as if different instruments are used, and a lot of the time you also get actual different instruments and styles as a bonus. But these days Babelfish or Google will even give you a rough trans...

I don't know where to post this: it belongs to the How To (build a solar-powered guitar?) thread, the "Sold Out" review thread, maybe the politics thread -- it sure is an awesome Youtube video. It's not just cool , it's good on top. Ladies & gentlemen, John Hunt with "Alice Cooper...

I had a pretzel and dipped it in mustard I just took a piss. I didn't hit the flush lever right and it half flushed. I had to push it again. You just redefined the standards for cliffhangers. ... Yes... what happened then? You can't mention such banalities if nothing happened then........ ? ....

Re: You are on your own now USA
This guy's book is an interesting read, so far: http://www.withouthotair.com/ Thanks for that. I've only read the 10 page synopsis and the bit about electrical gadgets (everybody turn off your computers - bye bye home recording), but it reads well and makes one think. The map of Britain covered in ...

vehicle emissions are putting into the atmosphere carbon that has been locked up under the ground for several million years. The methane emissions from livestock simply contain the same carbon atoms that have been cycling in and out of the atmosphere for millions of years as part of the carbon cycl...

JB, as I'm sure you know true Renaissance men and women have a double for each instrument - one for SED (science, enhancement, destruction) and one for music. Renaissance dudes below hamburger living standards may have to combine these though.

Re: How to make old guitar strings sound like new.
Eric, true, but most of the 'penny cleaning' action is about the outer coating, which like your link says is or has a lot of copper. There could be interference but perhaps it's small? (And I wonder if other common coin materials like Ni and Zn would behave similarly since they are chemically close?...

I may try the full boiling treatment at a later point. Any ideas to rejuvenate nylon strings? ++ sciency bit ++ As for the dull pink I got, this helpful page says that "copper which is clean but microscopically rough tends to be less shiny and more pinkish." That would be it... This page s...

2) If you mic and play well, I don't see why it would "probably" sound that way. This is a bigger problem for baritones than tenors Yeah I overgeneralized from my play/mic experience. Still I think you're right about the baritone part - singing an octave above speaking voice my vocals 'sep...

Re: How to make old guitar strings sound like new.
The metal strings of my classical guitar are old and crusty, so why not experiment. I didn't take them off and cook them, but I rubbed them with a "sandwich" where the bread is cardboard and the filling is a cloth soaked in salty vinegar. Result: I think they sound a bit better, they look ...

Thanks - you guys are ace! 1) Right... makes sense. I think the 'unnatural' combination of heavy reverb plus quick decay made me guess it was a completely electronic sound before. 2) roymond and ken your tips are duly noted - cheers. studio recordings should not be held to what's physically possible...

Not having immediate use for any of these, but since I think of them now: Q1: There's this often cheesy "metal slap" percussion sound that seems to have been real popular in the 80s. I've always wondered what it is. For want of another example, check the intro of Another Day in Paradise . ...
