Re: Nur Ein XI- Round Six

Lunk - you are correct, your song was in five parts, it was under three minutes, it therefore met the challenge. The problem with judging Nur Ein is that as you get into the later rounds, you have a small group of excellent songwriters competing, and you have to slice things really fine to come up w...

Re: Nur Ein XI- Round Six

Hi, all. As you have probably noticed, I have not posted any reviews since Round 2. Life has just kicked me over and over again the last few weeks. Since the start of Nur Ein (in chronological order): my dog died, my wife's old cat (who still lived with her ex-husband) died, someone tried to break i...

Re: Nur Ein XI- Round Two

A pretty strong week. I know things are going well when my notes about the song I ranked lowest say “Not great, but not bad.” I could have ranked any of the top 7 songs as the top song, this is just how they shook out in my current mental state (which has not been good the last few weeks). From best...

Re: Nur Ein XI- Round Zero

There was a lot of half-assing going on this round. Fair warning to everyone, you'd better get your whole ass into the fight in the coming rounds, or you will be gone. I look at a song as a marriage of three parts – structure, lyric, and arrangement. Not only does each part have to stand alone, but ...

I encourage everyone to do just that. As a judge listening to 25+ songs and ranking them in two days, I absolutely will not have time to puzzle out your lyrics if they are unclear. If I don't know what you are saying, it could hurt you.

You know what they say: Those who can, do. Those who can't, judge.

Re: Gift of Music 2015-2016

Nice work, Schlimminy Cricket! You did a beautiful job with that track - it's not at all how I would have expected someone to take that one, but it is lovely. In an odd twist of GOM fate, Mr. Cricket was both my gifter and my giftee this year. I have a rather long list of excuses for not finishing; ...

Re: Gift of Music 2015-2016

Well, I got my assignment, so I know I'm in. Here are my choices (apologies for the tardiness): Sunbrain - Gravity British Sea Power - Who's In Control? Swervedriver - Duel And You Will know Us By the Trail of Dead - Worlds Apart I'd love to hear someone take on of these and make it their own! Happy...

10-26-2015 Body Art

Last week, I celebrated my 40th birthday. As a present to myself, I finally got the tattoo I've been wanting for years. It's my first, so I wanted it to be something special, and of course, music has been the driving force of my entire life. Song Fight connection: the music you see is the first meas...

Old punks never die, they just write shorter and shorter songs because long songs are too hard to remember all the way through.

I'm not sure if I missed it, but do we have a practice space lined up? I'm thinking that my set is going to be a three-piece garage punk set (getting back to my roots), but we'll have to practice at some point.
