Re: Backup Planning - what's your scheme?

I've read multiple accounts from random people on the internet claiming that Degoo mysteriously lost some of the data (or compressed? Who knows) and wouldn't let them download some of the data. At least one person also claimed downloads were insanely slow for them. Just something to consider. That a...

Re: Tuning Vocals in Post

I don't like pitch modification to the extent that natural intonation and modulation is lost. It gets even worse if you use it for harmonies. They always sound super artificial - even though Melodyne tries to add in some humanization, it still sounds robot-y. And, of course, less than subtle pitch c...

Re: Tuning Vocals in Post

Semi-related: So I tried out Pitchmap (which is currently on sale, too) on a few full mixes. I can't say I'd recommend it for that. It misses way too many things for my taste, so if, for example, I try to change the scale, clearly audible parts of the background still use the old scale. It might wor...

Re: Tuning Vocals in Post

To answer the question about Essential vs. Assistant: Essential does away with all of the detailed pitch and timing editing. These are the things you can do in Assistant but not in Essential: Change the phrasing intensity within notes (from super flat to exaggerated) Change the pitch transitions (fr...

Re: Tuning Vocals in Post

ReaTune is pretty aggravating to use IMO. It's difficult to "aim" corrections, and its pitch detection is pretty bad, at least on my vocals. The big benefit in all of the paid options (except the dumbed down versions of Auto-Tune) is that you can adjust the detection results after the fact - just sp...

Sale probably going until 6 Dec. PS. Celemony is running a sale on Melodyne: "essential" 50% o...

Re: You wouldn't dare... (Try Me Reviews)

If you want to fairly compare mixes/masters, do level matching - relevel one of them so that the average loudness (e.g. integrated loudness according to EBU R 128, as reported by plugins like Youlean Loudness Meter) is the same. So, if song A is reported at -6 LUFS and song B is reported at -12 LUFS...

Re: Strange music artifact

Interesting, I've always felt that music sounds a tiny bit higher played at very high volumes...

The other thing is easy to explain, though. Those weak sound waves simply get more tired on their way to you.

I wish I could say the same about stackoverflow and programming related IRC channels. It's a bloodbath over there!
I'm happy to say that #git on Freenode is usually type 1, too. I'm sure that's one of the reasons that this is one of the last IRC channels I'm still active on.

Re: Deals On Gear and Software

I think the audio demos are enough to judge how well the phrasing works - if not how complicated it is to build phrases with their software. :) - Hollywood Choirs sound decent enough to get some basic choir-type sound in the background, but they sound kind of boring and too "uniform" if that makes a...

Re: Cooking

It wouldn't hurt, of course, but since most recipes aren't in that format and it's a ton of work to restructure them like that, I figure it's more time-efficient to do the chronological ordering and maybe just tweak the recipe slightly so it's easier to notice parallelizing opportunities when skimmi...

Re: Cooking

Personally I'm a big fan of "mostly" mise en place, separating the bulk of preparing ingredients from the other steps. Maybe it's not the most time-efficient way to go about things, but it sure helps keep chaos away. To easily plan out a recipe, I prefer a roughly chronologically ordered version wit...

Re: ‘Decent’ cheap gear guides?

FWIW the cheapest mic that is worth considering is Behringer's XM8500 at ~$20. Thomann has audio samples: https://www.thomann.de/gb/behringer_xm8500.htm

Obviously you can't expect a large diaphragm condenser sound from it, but it's a surprisingly decent dynamic mic.

Re: Artist interrupts new single with an ad

I've never heard of this before, so I checked it out a little yesterday. Is there a reason I should use this instead of Spotify or is it s Lyft v. Uber/ Pepsi v. Coke kind of thing? Other than them trying to move to a fairer revenue model? My reasons for using Deezer are a little incidental: they u...

Re: Aquaman

I don't even remember most of the storyline. All that's left is a vague memory of the plot, and the main thing I remember is that the character arc felt very formulaic (though "Alita - Battle Angel" which I watched more recently did this even worse and with more stupid demographic targeting). It loo...
