Re: Remixfight

Okay, here we go. It's been fun but I think I'm done with working on this now. https://songfight.net/forums/download/file.php?id=1490 Some notes: - Unfortunately many of the raw tracks had already been heavily processed, making it difficult to get everything out of them that I would have liked to ha...

Re: Remixfight

I spent a few hours on a mix, using all of the original track in exactly the original places. I'll relisten after a good night's sleep, add any tweaks that come to mind and then I'll upload it. I also recorded a live stream of (most of) what I did, which I can share with you guys if you're intereste...

Re: Remixfight

Just to be absolutely clear - by "remix", are we talking about the common meaning where an artist/producer takes an original work and adds their own things to it as they please, or the stricter interpretation where it's really only about creating a new mixdown of the existing material with nothing e...

Re: What was that? (Disembodied Voice reviews)

That’s why practice outside of the context of songs is important. Those of us who started our musical journeys in school or with lessons have spent a ton of time playing or singing exercises out of method books, which helps to develop technique and an ear for pitch. I disagree with this. Exercises ...

Re: What was that? (Disembodied Voice reviews)

While you guys were busy arguing about a particularly low-effort and non-constructive review post, I listened to the songs. I tried commenting on different aspects of each song, to the extent I could think of something. Reviews do not cover the lyrics, I added a few token comments about them for the...

Re: Deals On Gear and Software

Until 2 Dec, UVI is discounting Falcon 2 and most other things by 30% (Falcon 2: $/€349 -> $/€244). Falcon 2 is one of the most flexible modular synths that I'm aware of, including a pretty powerful sampler. If you want to get into sound design and you like maximum flexibility at the cost of a steep...

Rebalancing/splitting fully mixed songs

Can't believe anyone posted this yet... in these modern days, there are tools to split/remove e.g. vocals from a finished mix that don't sound completely terrible. You get 4-5 separate tracks out of them (think bass/drums/vocals/misc), and/or a set of faders to re-balance these parts of the audio. O...

Re: Hold your breath for (The Smoke Is Rolling In reviews)

I don't know how Jast's template works. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It saves a local copy of the markup from songfight.org at the time the fight is downloaded. If the markup was wrong at that point in time, then the links my template contains are wrong, too. If it was correct, the links will be correct, too. (I did ...

Re: Niv and the Exploration

no idea what the heck the Max the Cat entry is. Unfortunately, whatever the Max the Cat one was, I can't find any tools that can make heads or tails of it. Looking at a hex dump it looks like a project file for some DAW (Apple, presumably, so maybe Garageband?) with ID3 tags tacked on... there are ...

Does software count? I dropped some money on yet another pack of virtual instruments I'll never use because I never have time, but they're insanely cool. It's a bunch of virtual brass instruments from Samplemodeling. The unique thing about them is that there are no pre-recorded articulations - you c...

Re: mixing tips

For floating point engines it only matters if the DAW clips the signal coming out of a plugin, or the plugin does it (floating point can go above 0 dB). In any other case it doesn't matter. That said, if you want to make extra sure not to do it, just trim everything by 10 dB before you set up any pl...
