Re: Nur Ein XX Final Round "XX"

Congrats to both BSS And Grumpy Mike! You truly brought your A-game and this was as close as it could get. I will admit that technically you both nailed it. It was the overall visceral effect that decided it for me, a subjective response to two awesome songs produced virtually flawlessly. “Exceeds e...

Re: Nur Ein XX Round Six "Dark Cove"

How can all five songs be so good? I struggled with this bunch and loved it. Grumpy Mike - SOLID! The humming and claps opening is instantly engaging. The almost-metal arrangement is tight and clean. Vocal performance spot on. This is the chorus I had in my head much of the last 4 days. Very catchy!...

Re: Your Studio Monitor Recommendations for Mixing

I had Mackie HR824s, which i loved until I blew either a speaker or the crossover. Try getting those babies serviced (!). I also downsized, to Mackie MR524s, for $200 used. Love them, too. I usually mix in headphones (Sony MDR-7506), then play back in the monitors, and go back and forth.

Re: What doesn't kill you.... (Silver Birthday reviews)

It is interesting, very interesting... Is this microtonality? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic_temperament Also I made one of these out of a damaged Laurel Canyon acoustic I got for free. :) https://www.kiteguitar.com/ Love that! I’d heard of Kite but never played one. I’m curious how well it bl...

Re: What doesn't kill you.... (Silver Birthday reviews)

roymond : Oh, twinkly! And then so much reverb and chorus. We’re in this dream pop soundscape, until suddenly…trap-infused drum beats? Very adventurous structure here and I want to give points for that. Cool chord shift starting on after “within you” for sure. I find myself more intrigued by what y...

I considered starting to play guitar with one arm tied behind my back,
This. This is the right answer.

On a related note: Let this act as attestation that I will hold nothing against anyone who doesn't know the thing that they're not expected to know even though it exists.

Re: Nur Ein XX Round Four "Cracks In The Sidewalk"

So I learned after that fact that, without written notation, it can be difficult or impossible to discern 5/4 from 5/8. My thoughts are this...it's all about perceived meter. You can notate a song in any meter you like (even carrying across bar lines), but notation doesn't define the actual meter. ...

THIS was an awesome round! These are extraordinary songs that didn't exist a week earlier. Congrats to everyone who rocked it. I like providing feedback/reviews but it's been a crazy few weeks. I'll do my best from here on out, as it starts getting very interesting towards the finale. Please don't r...

Re: Song Fight! turns 25 in June

I built a PC from parts in the mid ‘80s and got an audio card that would sync to my Tascam 4 track Portastudio, using one of its tracks for the sync signal. I forget what software I used! That gave me three tracks of audio and however many MIDI instruments the CPU could handle on the PC. I bought a ...

Re: Nur Ein XX Round Four "Cracks In The Sidewalk"

I bet it's tough to come up with challenges that work for well for everyone, given our varied skills and experience, and appreciate the thought and effort that goes in. I think fitting everyone just right all the time is just too unrealistic of a goal. Just my 2c. Not that I was driving any of the ...

Nick Cave's "Where the Wild Roses Grow" as a model That is a classic, and a great model for that round;s challenge. But it's in 6/8, not 3/4. :P And Logic absolutely does support setting the meter/time signature to whatever you want, as many times as you want, during a song: https://suppo...

It’s gonna be tight. I may arrive Thursday late, work Friday remote, leave Sunday. But it’s worth it!
“The man” just informed us we can work remote a couple weeks in August, so I’m gonna stay a little longer, at least to catch Spud’s Sunday event. Still arriving Thursday.
