I was going to perform and/or record Christmas music for relatives, but I'm in the second week of having a terrible cold and I can't sing worth a damn. It's like the universe doesn't WANT me to make music. (The SCA group I'm with was all set to do some music at a local Christmas festival, but THAT w...

It's got a stereo headphone out, into which you can plug a TRS splitter.

Re: What's a good set of e-drums?

Have you noticed any idiosyncratic behavior in the high-hat pedal? I've noticed that if you're trying to play anything that requires reasonably quick switching between open- and closed-hat hits, you're going to get some very fake truncated sounds. Yes, that's what remains frustrating to me, as ther...

Awesome, Reïst! I especially love the juxtaposition of the very informally-staged video of you at the drums and the beautiful-sounding drums in the song, especially the snare drum. What's your drum recording setup?

Re: What's a good set of e-drums?

Well, I happened to run across the Yamaha YDD-60 at Costco. They were selling it for $100, which is way less than I've seen it anywhere online, and they had one set up to try and the pads and pedals seemed pretty good, so I made it my early Christmas present to myself. Not bad at all, it turns out. ...

How about those all-in-one sets of percussion pads (e.g. http://drums-percussion.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-Digital-Drum-Machine-Kit?sku=501096 ), for those of us with NO available floor space? I wish I could get something like the Alesis kit Ken mentioned or some vDrums (or a real drumset f...

Weekender - November 14 and 15

Well, so much for MY weekend. My entry for "She Already Knows" isn't even going to make it out of the writing phase now. I'm going to be spending the rest of this weekend babysitting people and picking up slack. QotD: When someone who is inextricably part of your life - someone from whom i...

Re: Xmas bonus is coming, what should I buy?

You can't start with recording your guitar Do you mean that I can't first write the song on the guitar? I ask because I'd feel stifled if I had to pick a drum beat before I ever get the inspiration for the tune. I know, I've tried that approach. No no, you can WRITE however you like. (Personally, I...

We're up at my dad's lake house this weekend, but I'm having to isolate myself in a spare bedroom and do a day's work over the VPN. THEN I'll start the recording process on my entry. Something is wrong with me. Friend flooding, eh? And the Fightmasters have been known to sleuth it out when it occurs...

Even though I've only been hanging around a few weeks, Songfight has already kicked me in the ass to re-familiarize myself with multitracking software and get my guitar chops back together. And more particularly, jb calling me a "pussy" has inspired me to pack up a couple instruments and m...

Re: She Already Knows (pre-cognition)

Crud, I was planning to do my first entry for this fight cycle, and I really like this title, but life has administered a few well-judged kicks to the balls lately, and I don't want to just dash something off, especially for my first entry. :(

Re: Jealousies expressed of the prodigal son (Frank reviews)

When I saw this fight title, I worried right away that people would either do silly stuff (which I see has extended to the reviews :-) ), or use the fact that it's a hard phrase to connect with (partly because of the name - "Frank" has a more specific set of connotations than, say, "J...

Re: Therman One World None

I'll put in a vote of liking for this new name. It's short, it doesn't make reference to diseases or bodily functions (AFAIK :D ), and it sounds like a bunch of other things - Thurmond, Herman, theremin, merman, German - which'll make it more likely to get stuck in people's brains. I look forward to...

Bumping this thread - given the pace of change on the Internet, the hosting situation is probably all different than it was in January... What are people using these days? Is Bandcamp still good? Are there any hosting solutions you'd particularly recommend to somebody who would probably be directing...

Huh, for some reason I got the idea that you could vote for up to 3 songs. Is there a limit to how many you can vote for? Could one conceivably vote for ALL the songs? Or would that just cause an error message? If not, it should. Funny how people seem to subconsciously coordinate on a musical theme ...

The Stone Cold Crapper? Though actually that might be better as a gritty, depressing novel set in Appalachia at the turn of the century or some shit like that. Plus, I understand the Japanese have electronic toilet seats that warm up. I'm having band name trouble myself. Up to this point in my life,...

Hey, did I not say "electronic drums"? Did I mention programming or sequencing at all? Did I not, sight unseen, guess the VERY instrument and technique used to produce those sounds? DO YOU DOUBT MY PSYCHIC POWERS? If so, you do so at your peril! PERIL, I say!

But SF doesn't care about country, so neeeever mind. Well, I have close relatives who are country fans (though they are more likely to listen to Johnny-Cash era country, bluegrass or "Americana" than mainstream Trace Adkins type country), and I would say I'm puzzled by it rather than apat...

My day job involves Oracle databases. I feel for you. LOL. It's miles better than my previous job, which was tech support and LAN administration. At least when people bitch to me now, it's about things that they legitimately can't do for themselves. But yeah, it's still a crisis-driven job in large...
