Re: Take A Deep Breath And Smell Those (Foxglove reviews)

ARSEnal - I like the MIDI arrangement, having done plenty of this kind of thing myself. It presents the melodies cleanly and lets them be clearly heard against each other. In this case, the overlay of instrumental sounds works pretty well, though after the solo opening I was hoping for some thunder...

Re: The Good Place

We're still enjoying it but to be honest I'm wondering now how long they can stretch this out. I suspect maybe they are leading up to another big twist near the end of the season that recontextualizes everything again. That might work, but doesn't seem like a sustainable strategy for the show over ...

Re: The Good Place

I just finished the first season a couple of days ago. I'm not in love with the show as a whole, but the plot twists have been superb so far (and incredibly audacious, especially for a sitcom) which will definitely keep me watching a little longer. Keep at it! Now that the central twist has been re...

Re: The Good Place

Season 2 is proceeding splendidly. My wife and I love love love this show. It's brilliantly written (both the overall plotting of all the twists and turns, and the dialog and character development) and brilliantly performed (D'Arcy Carden! William Jackson Harper! Manny Jacinto! Obviously, Kristen Be...

Re: The LEGO Batman Movie

I'm still hoping to see this at some point. I enjoyed the LEGO Movie but thought the plot was incredibly formulaic, and I thought Will Arnett's Batman was one of the highlights of that movie. From what I've heard, the LEGO Batman Movie is not just a good LEGO movie but actually a good Batman movie.

Re: Flame On! (Flamethrower Reviews)

Chthonic Doom - Some nice riffs and pretty good heavy vocals, but for me I don’t think it lands as hard as you want it to, and in particular the constant crash cymbals just create a bed of white noise that I find really irritating. James Owens - You really doubled down on the “sing-along” challenge...

Re: So You're Saying You Like Me? (Darling, You're Strange Reveiws)

Berkeley Social Scene - The 5/4 meter feels very natural which is not always the case with compound meters so well done on that front. I love the lead guitar especially in its use of feedback/distortion. The chorus is nicely memorable but the vocal melody on the verse just feels meandering and rand...

Re: But in all seriousness... (Zero Gravity reviews)

Micah Sommersmith—The new piano sounds good. This is really unlike your other songs I’ve heard. I kind of miss the accordion, but I like this, too. Your more restrained vocal performance is appropriate for this song and sounds great. Did you record two vocal tracks, or just process a single track i...

and, of course, there's that "astronauts from Ohio" meme that was going around a while back ("why are they so anxious to get out of Ohio?") Once in college, I was at a conference with other young people from across the US and I overheard this brief exchange which I will forever c...

Re: But in all seriousness... (Zero Gravity reviews)

It's a slow week for reviews, it seems. Here are mine. Berkeley Social Scene - The guitars are, as always, great, especially the jangly picking and that trans-Neptunian solo. The synth strings that start things off are pretty darn cheesy, which for me detracts a lot. Friends of Olaf - I’m not oppose...

Re: Big Little Lies

I was a bit disappointed. Also read the novel which I liked - but shifting the setting from Sydney's northern beaches to California seemed pretty silly (though the scenery was quite spectacular in parts). True - that change didn't make it as bad as I thought it was going to be - but it did lose a l...

Big Little Lies

I recently finished watching the HBO miniseries Big Little Lies, and it is fantastic. I read the novel it is based on a couple years ago and loved it, but the series might be even better. It's about a group of parents of first-graders, and their children, and the tangled web of relationships between...
