Re: What was that? (Disembodied Voice reviews)

NOTE: I feel like there's a more than usual amount of genre/familiarity bias in my reviews this time around. Apologies to those that only got a few words, but know that I listened to the whole fight many times over, generally enjoyed it, and just didn't end up with interesting thoughts you need to h...

Do you come up with chords and noodle (or mix/match) over it? Or do you find notes you like first and have that dictate the chord progression?
This is all after the song is written, so the chords are set.

Re: What was that? (Disembodied Voice reviews)

Not really. Or maybe in the loosest of ways. I guess I must have some kind of feeling for what I want, but I really do just randomly try notes to see what works. That's kind of fascinating to me. So do you have tricks for finding notes, like you know you like certain intervals already, or is it mor...

Re: What was that? (Disembodied Voice reviews)

2. play each interval and match both notes. So, play a C and then a D, then C and D#, then C and E. Work your way all the way up to C again, practicing the octave jump. This seems like a great exercise for more than vocals. When I'm recording lead guitar or a keyboard melody, I just stumble around ...

Re: What was that? (Disembodied Voice reviews)

If you think folks should strive not to take reviews as personal attacks (and I do think that) then you should probably treat the songs themselves the same way. Also, this vocal advice is great. I've struggled with the same thing over the years. I've mostly done what Ken says, but I might try mholla...

Re: What was that? (Disembodied Voice reviews)

No-one forced you to read it, or comment on it, but if you are going to dismiss every review you disagree with as "whining" then this conversation is over. And sadly, you proved my point. j$ Sure, keep ignoring what I'm complaining about and pretend the problem is that I disagree with you.

Specifically aimed at you :} And then you joke about how your comment was simultaneously directed at everyone and no one. No I don't. And also, whining about reviews ? Grow a pair. If you can whine about songs no one forced you to listen to, I can whine about a lazy, mean-spirited post that doesn't...

Re: What was that? (Disembodied Voice reviews)

I always wonder how to strike a balance in reviews between being constructive, honest, respectful, and enthusiastic when possible. Arguably being negative but specific is the most respectful you can be because of the work you have to put in. And it can give you something useful. But dismissing a fig...

Re: And now you see (How It Comes Apart reviews)

I'm late, so here are... not so much reviews, but random comments. Phlebia - Soothing guitar tone. I like the relaxed vibe of the vocals. It fits the arrangement and the story. There's a nice trick there where the lines sound sort of banal until you realize they're not figurative ("when they te...

Re: Don't wink at me (Eyes In The Dark reviews)

Owl - Cool chorus. Your singing is real nice there. The vocal is eq'd a little harshly. I like the way these guitars crunch. thanks for the review! Can you clarify what you meant as far as the harsh vocal EQ—too much high end? (I think I just put on some preset like “Mud Free” in Reaper) I don't kn...

Re: Don't wink at me (Eyes In The Dark reviews)

Some short ones: Night Sky - Fun arrangement. Some really good chord changes and transitions in there. I'm torn on the vocals. In some spots, the muttering quality is nice, but I feel the urge to hear some real belting. Owl - Cool chorus. Your singing is real nice there. The vocal is eq'd a little h...

Re: If we make it (Better Luck Next Year reviews)

Third Installment: Sweeney Toad - Moodly. The plodding quality has some pros and cons to it. It builds a nice atmosphere. The bowling alley and beer line seems like a bad tonal fit. Switching to the other vocal style is smart for variety's sake. Hardmonica - Thick sound. There are a lot of good voca...

Re: If we make it (Better Luck Next Year reviews)

Second Installment: Cavedwellers - Cool riff, especially that line that sometimes extends past the chords. The vocal sounded way too loud but then I realized I was listening on my computer monitor's speaker again. Better on the headphones, so must be a mono/stereo thing. Could still stand to be lowe...
