Music Experiment Results

If I recall correctly, someone here participated in the experiment Franck describes in this NYT article . It was years ago so I'm not going to dig through the archives to make sure. Anyone else remember a "rate the indie songs and pass along to your friends" website? I remember noticing that the fro...

Mostess is in a musical

If you're in the greater Detroit area this late July/early August, come see Mostess play Ladslav Sipos in an outdoor production of "She Loves Me!"

Re: Help and suggestions wanted ... recording on Linux

I tried a Linux set up a while back (Ubuntu). I got Ardour working after dealing with something called JACK. I got my hardware set up right and got to recording. It was sheer nonsense. There were these tiny buffer under-runs that would happen once every few seconds because the OS would ignore the in...

Re: One can only hope (prefight thread)

We're working on an entry. Here's the first sketch. And because it sounds like Dan Fogelberg on valium, here's the second. Ugh. It might not be worth it.

Re: nanostudio and garageband

This is why I like GarageBand: even a crummy vocal take can be normalized, pitch- and time- corrected a tad, . Oh? Can it? Do you use that stuff? I haven't. Not out of any sort sense of it is "cheating" or anything - I know my vox very often need pitch or time correcting - I have just never found t...

Re: nanostudio and garageband

The one fight I've ever won by myself as RangerDen (Vest Factory) was recorded with the laptop mic in my Smackbook inside my closet. I clipped twice. I apologized with reverb and effects and mysteriousness. Goes to show that there is a sweetspot between songwriting and production in order to place ...

Feels like old times around here! Only the brave will post OtM's name: hungry troll is hungry.

Too bad I didn't get my entry finished past the I-wonder-what-this-would-sound-like phase. But here's a taste of what might have been...

Hostess Mostess Album Help

Imagine if Hostess Mostess made an album consisting of songs from their SongFight! catalog---all re-recorded with solid performances, all mixed carefully and mastered properly. If you have any opinions about such a thing, I have 2 questions for you: 1) What is the ideal song list? 2) What tracks wou...

Re: Archive data fun

(*You will recall "Prayer for Pancakes" does not count because that was the one-hour skirmish done for Spud and JBs TV appearance, after which it was deemed all entrants were the "winners") It was a 14-way tie with 2 votes each and I bet I know who cast all those votes. Perhaps our moderators could...

Re: Quantity and/or quality

============= EDIT: I have actually written a song for this week - but If I get around to recording - it will be entered under a pseudonym. It is one of "those" songs that a respected professional does not need to be associated with. So you are safe this week HoMo. Your professional standards may e...

Re: Archive data fun

There actually was a quite noticeable uptick in the average number of votes per song at one point in time (July 2nd, 2008), which is when the "All We Could See At The Window" fight ended. With a little poking around on the boards I was able to determine that was in fact when Spud released the new m...

Re: Archive data fun

I whipped up a chart showing number of votes across the horizontal axis, and number of songs that received that number of votes on the vertical axis. I did not include songs from fights where votes were not recorded. Surprisingly, the most common numbers of votes received were 1, 2, 3, and then 0. ...

Re: Who's been to Turkey?

This is a pretty awesome place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pamukkale Bring a bathing suit. Make sure you do a Turkish bath (bring lots of cash: you're supposed to tip everybody). Do it towards the end of a hot day of walking around. I loved Topkapi though it's super touristy. The Grand Bazzar, not...
