Re: Question About Mixing Down

The difference is mastering, the combination of EQ, compression, clipping and limiting (applied AFTER you mixdown) to increase volume and help your mix translate better in many different listening environments. If you like how your song sounds as is, then I wouldn't worry about making it any louder....

Preamps = Yes?

Yeah, there are some other threads about preamps, but they're all from like 2007 and I didn't feel like necromancing them. Recently I got a chance to get at the guts of some pro mixes, and I've been completely impressed by the tone of the solo'd lead vocals: present without being harsh, full soundi...

Re: Wall*E

Yeah, definitely see it on the big screen. This one is certainly going in the Blu-Ray collection for me. I also loved the short at the beginning, which was so much better than any of the previous shorts they'd opened their movies with, as far as I was concerned. Really? It was pretty good (made me w...

Re: Nur Ein III- Final Round

With following the precedent and the voting falling the way it did, I don't think there's any need for controversy. ask any suffragette if precedent is a reason to continue an unfair practice. It is clear that Nur Ein needs a better way of dealing with ties. However, experience shows that changing ...

Re: Virus or just spyware?

Whoever isn't using AVG Free Edition or Kaspersky (commercial) is an idiot. There, I said it. I've never used any anti-virus software (just a router with reasonable firewall settings and some common sense) and I've never had a virus or trojan. If that makes me an idiot, I guess I'm ok with it. I ha...

Re: Nur Ein III- Final Round

I was out of town over the weekend, and these songs served as the soundtrack to my train ride home. Unbelievable. Never have I seen a challenge so thoroughly whomped.

Re: Vocal Dynamics

Spud, don't be afraid to ride the faders / edit volume envelopes. In a typical mix I find myself riding the faders on nearly every track, and certainly for the vocals. For quieter bits, you might want an expander Why? The only reason I could imagine using an expander on Maddog is as a gentle noise g...

Re: Keepin' it short

I say throw out the standard song structure. Maybe try keeping the chorus short? I prefer a chorus that's half as long as the verse. Plus that way you can double it up at the end of the song without feeling guilty. My best song went like this: Intro => Chorus => Another Intro => Verse A => Verse B =...

In the event of a tie for winner in the final round as judged by the previous participants, the tied participants will be ranked by the judges as in previous rounds. In the event of a tie after that ... I love a good combinatronics problem, so just for fun I thought I'd sit down and figure out the ...

What I'm trying to say is yes, it would be wise to have a contingency for that situation (I vote Deathball), but no, we probably will not have one until said situation arises.

Re: Nur Ein III- Round 6

I can honestly say that I've never agreed with the voting results of a round of Nur Ein more. Round 7 is going to be epic.

Now that I'm off the hook as judge (unless, as mentioned, there's a tie or two) I should really get on those reviews.

I used the web browser that comes with DSOrganize. It's sort of like Links but with pictures.

Anyone else got a DS here? So far I've been loving mine, which I got on Wednesday in exchange for trading in 5 crappy Wii games at EB.

The following is something so nerdy that I had to hide it in the background colour. When I was 14 I placed first in the 1998 Magic: The Gathering pro-tour qualifier in my province (B.C.), winning what was--at least, to me at the time--a staggering amount of money, and an invitation to the Pro Tour i...

Re: Nur Ein III- Round 5

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't it totally a force? If I'm swinging a paint can around, my arm exerts a centripetal force on the can, keeping it in its arc. The paint inside the can, however, wants to stay moving in a straight line, so it applies an equal but opposite centrifugal force agai...

[Centrifugal force is] not a force! It's a real phenomenon, but "force" is a misnomer. Correct me if I'm wrong here, but isn't it totally a force? I'm not worried about idle. My wii is cacophonous when spinning the disc. Which, due to it's lack of a harddrive, seems to be always.
