Re: Nur Ein X - Round Five

Erik is the guy I call when I need encouragement to spend a ridiculous amount of money on a guitar. Five minutes of talking to him and I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT.

I'm the guy he calls when he needs to sit in silence in a child-free house. He usually asks me to leave as soon as he gets here.

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Five

Oh, and hey, sorry about all those bells this week! I fired everybody in my in-house bell choir.

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Five

I'm sorry to see Ken go and I agree these are some of the best songs I've heard from him. (admittedly, I probably missed a lot of good stuff as I tend to disappear in early June and re-emerge in late April) I'm always fascinated by how far apart the judges can be and it's a good reminder of the rand...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Five

FBF : The mid-tempo plodding of the verse doesn't inspire me a great deal but the way the song builds gives the arrangement a classy injection of flavour and dynamics. I particularly like the odd sprinklings of synth and guitar. Funnily enough, I said to Erik (of àtlm fame), "This tempo is goi...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Five

Frankie Big Face Frankie collaborates with David Bowie and Kim Deal on this one, and it sounds great. Verses are clever and interesting, I especially like the back full of arrows line. Fight requirements met with aplomb. Ask yourself a simple question? Can anybody beat this guy? The tinkly bells in...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Five

We need more reviews. Not necessarily from me, but I'm here and I'm avoiding other more important things. Here are my reviews in the order I would rank them: àtlm - The high concept is lost on me - never read Joyce. But Leonard Cohen set to a train beat I understand! I'm a little sorry I didn't sing...

Re: Nur Ein X - Two Day Shadow?

Two Day Shadow - Frankie Big Face One day we matter The next day we shatter Some clicks and some clatter Come before the fall I'm beaten and battered You're withered and tattered We're locked into a pattern Fueled by vitriol A face forlorn and fallow A two day shadow A back full of arrows And a cate...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Four

I started to write full reviews, but then I thought it may seem dickish to criticize songs after the results have already been posted and I was the winner of the round. So I thought I would just say that I really enjoyed Ken's song for the interesting arrangement which complemented the lyrics so wel...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Four

Thanks for catching the relationship of the "Woe-woe-woe..." to a banshee wail. I was very nervous about not including the title in my lyric and there was one place I could have shoehorned it but I decided to go with my gut and I guess it paid off. I didn't check out your YouTube links ye...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Four

À Tous Les Monsieurs The drums are also top notch, and I don't think the song would have worked as well in the hands of a less-skilled drummer (I think they sound like real drums, anyway. If not, then they're extraordinarily well-programmed!). This singer doesn't sound like Frank; did you kick him ...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Four

Frankie Big Face This song is so loud and high-energy that I kept worrying it would run off the rails, but it never does. That "Woe-woe-woe-woe-woe is me" is both incredibly catchy and a clever angle on the title! I also really love the staccato synth in the background under that chorus. ...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Four

FBF- super lovely awesome. I always imagine you think punk-pop is too easy for a man of your musical distinction(probably unfairly) but I am going to play this to my other half 'cos I know we'll both jumping around the room to this. People always accuse me of being FBF-friendly but if you want my v...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Four

Also, I don't mind announcing early that À Tous Les Monsieurs would probably have been my #1 this week, if he hadn't been immune. Jazz guitar funk! Meta lyrics! Four-part harmonies! Rap break (with some tight spot stacking)! Awesome stuff, Erik. That doesn't surprise me at all because, when I liste...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Four

As an aside, I used the new Drummer Track for the first time in Logic Pro X to make this track and that thing is fucking awesome. Saved me hours and made my song so much more interesting than if I had use a loop.

Re: Nur Ein X - Banshee lyrics

Banshee - Frankie Big Face Can I get a word with you? Can I get a word with you? My job, my age, some lies, a picture With my dog, a date, a fifth of liquor And by every measure we are having fun A pulse, a beat, a light, a flicker Of romance, a dance, a strong predictor We were always meant to be, ...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Four

Last night, I had a dream that I was being scolded by a couple of non-existent female friends who were offended by my assumption that a banshee has to be a woman. This is what happens when it's Saturday night and you still haven't started your song. But I'm finished now so :P . My voice instrument i...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Three

Thanks for the unexpected win. Not to be self-deprecating, but I did not expect this entry would do anything but just get me by to the next round. No plans of winning immunity as is evidenced by the fact that I completed a song entitled "Banshee" on Tuesday night. Had I known immunity was...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Three

Jon, thank you for your kind words about my song. I thought about singing a verse up the octave but it seemed out of character for the song. It may have wandered dangerously close to stadium rock territory. If I had, say, used a VST for the didgeridoo , I would have chosen a higher key, which probab...

Re: Nur Ein X - Round Three

And FBF nailed it in particular. "Tuckeroo" was an interesting choice. . First off, excellent! Makes me very happy. The last thing I wanted to do was sound misinformed or, worse, that I was making fun of the place. I chose my reference points carefully and well, apparently! (Kudos to the ...
