On the topic of video editors: DaVinci Resolve has a free version that can do almost anything you'd ever need (if you're not a pro).

Weird... the channel (#songfight!) has been up for a very long time.

Re: Niv and the Exploration

no idea what the heck the Max the Cat entry is. Unfortunately, whatever the Max the Cat one was, I can't find any tools that can make heads or tails of it. Looking at a hex dump it looks like a project file for some DAW (Apple, presumably, so maybe Garageband?) with ID3 tags tacked on... there are ...

Re: Gear Acquisition Syndrome

Does software count? I dropped some money on yet another pack of virtual instruments I'll never use because I never have time, but they're insanely cool. It's a bunch of virtual brass instruments from Samplemodeling. The unique thing about them is that there are no pre-recorded articulations - you c...

Re: mixing tips

For floating point engines it only matters if the DAW clips the signal coming out of a plugin, or the plugin does it (floating point can go above 0 dB). In any other case it doesn't matter. That said, if you want to make extra sure not to do it, just trim everything by 10 dB before you set up any pl...

I've been home for about 10h now. Sleep next. After that I'll see about writing something.

Re: Circle of Titles - The Return

Looks like I'll be busy with work stuff for the entire weekend, in preparation for next week's vacation. This is the only time I had available for writing and recording a song.
I think I'll be very late.

Re: Collecting royalties

You guys are so lucky. In Germany the only option is GEMA and if you sign up with them, it's an exclusive deal (they automatically get to do the collecting for everything you've ever made). I recall an event where GEMA charged an artist for putting up his own songs on his own website...

I've re-lyriced lots of (parts of) songs to make them about Raving Rabbids... because of reasons.

True. I just checked the archives and the time for CoT has never been less than 14 days - the longest was about 5 weeks.

Re: Sample rate and bit depth survey

24/44.1 for the last 10 years or so. To explain the terms a bit more: sample rate determines up to which frequency you can capture sounds - and nothing else. The theoretical limit is half the sampling rate, but for technical reasons (to prevent aliasing) a low-pass filter needs to be applied interna...

Re: Open vs closed back headphones survey

I do almost everything with closed-back headphones, simply because they're better for recording (they leak way less sound) and this way I don't have to switch between different models.

Re: Deals On Gear and Software

If you need a workhorse software synth, you may want to look into SynthMaster, which is currently on sale. I haven't used it myself but I hear it's extremely flexible if you're willing to put in the effort (and put up with a quite complex user interface). If you get SynthMaster Player + the crossgra...

Re: Studio acoustics: speaker mounting

AFAIK you can't really use foam to dampen bass, due to the extreme wavelengths involved (rule of thumb being: 1/4 wavelength of insulation or don't bother). The only category of things that really work and don't have the size of a small building is bass-eating cabinets that have a membrane or someth...

Re: Nur Ein XV Round Four "Carte Blanche"

You know, "Carte Blanche" is from the French for "blank check." I don't think it is. The French word for check is "chèque". A more faithful translation is "white card" or "blank paper". On donnait ainsi à l’ennemi une grande feuille de papier vierge...

If you have Essential, the update is free.
If you have another edition and purchased/registered after 1 March, the update is free.
In any other case:
Assistant $49
Editor $99
Studio $149

And yes, the changes look very convincing...

While we're at it, the information about the IRC channel on songfight.net is outdated. We moved from euIRC to Mibbit quite some time ago, due to some difficulties with euIRC.

Re: The Curse Of Creativity

My own take on the subject, split off into a separate post for better readability, has more of a focus on "maintaining" creativity in general. I think the true curse of creativity is what happens if you paint yourself into a corner where you feel pressured to be creative (or to be creative...

Re: The Curse Of Creativity

I'm not a huge fan of Peterson - I think he uses way too many convoluted sentences to make his ideas sound fancier than they are. Anyway, I watched it, and the whole thing is about trying to turn creativity into a career, not about creativity as such - even if he takes several minutes to get to the ...
