Re: Hey, look over there! (prefight)

Hang on -- you're travelling light with an 8-channel deck? Are you picturing a reel-to-reel machine?? The Tascam Portastudio 488 uses regular cassettes, divides each of the two stereo tracks down the middle with offset read/write heads. It's the size of a beefy 8+4 channel mixer board. Could've bor...

Re: Hey, look over there! (prefight)

I'll second that. When I switched to digital multi-tracking, it was a revelation. You save hours on the tape rewind and queueing alone! The creative flexibility is amazing. For this fight, I assembled the chorus first, then some verses. Then I switched them around and patched them together. To make...

Re: Hey, look over there! (prefight)

Haha! Turns out, I used Reaper (which I downloaded three days ago to test as a DAW-away-from-home) to sequence a better beat, and didn't have the cable I needed to transfer that track to my tape recorder ... so I seem to have recorded six more tracks in Reaper ...

But - my tape recorder doesn't make mp3's unless I put tapes in!

Re: The Great Big Songfighter Birthday Thread

Thanks guys!! I've been in Berkeley for about 3 weeks. Still kind of staggering around blinking at things, but I'm gonna break out the synth and the tascam 488 portastudio this week. I was able to get a ten-pack of Maxell UR-90's at Walgreens! Hope I'm on the boards again soon - smack me if I'm not!...

Great stories. If there's a road-trip songfight I call dibs on using "my brother threw up on our poodle".

Hey guys, hope all are well. I've been out of the mood to write, just playing keys for a group fronted by others. But I'm preparing a move to be a temporary californian: driving from NY to Berkeley at the end of september, I'll be working there for a year. QotD, who's driven across the country? I sh...

Re: I Bloody Well Might! (prefight)

Well, I used the title for a hook line in a FAWM song:

And I think it could be something good, but no time to fix it for the fight.

Enjoy my newbie guitar playing if you can! ;-) I'll try to be posting another one in a few days.

Re: The 7th Annual Gift of Music

I vote for your string quartet too. Actually, I'm planning to write one today as the accompaniment to "I Will Be Acquitted", which was a cappella before. Mine will be keyboarded in, though. Oh well!

Hey all, just cheering from the sidelines. Can't wait to get the free songs - maybe next year I'll be able to jump in again myself.

Re: Drumming without a Drummer

Even a good drum program is no good if you don't know what to do with the beats. I took an arranging course from Berklee this summer and one of the coolest things about it was that they gave us songs to study, and charts to look at, and assignments stealing the grooves of the songs outright. Even so...

Re: She Already Knows that you dig her song. Right?

Happy thanksgiving everybody - Don't Tell Betsy - Simple and smiley. "future.. she's already there" is nice. Interleaving guitar lines are simple but they work together well. I wish the bridge didn't start with the same two chords as the verses, it wanted much more of a contrast. And by the time we ...

Re: Maid to be plaid? (Made to Be Played Reviews)

Weakest Suit - The bass doubling the melody has a nice effect. The guitar effect is cool to listen to for a while. Song is not throwing anything at me fast enough overall. I feel like in those big open spaces between words I'm just hanging waiting while nothing happens. Wages - Ok structure I guess...

Re: Writer's bitch is such a block (Dry Spell reviews)

Jan Krueger - You execute all this well enough, but the lyrics don't deliver me anywhere special Perhaps I was just being too obscure. Or perhaps talking about how great sacrificing others is is too boring. Either way, thanks for the review. Maybe this is an interesting general point. When I say ly...

Re: Writer's bitch is such a block (Dry Spell reviews)

My feeling in this fight is that I don't care about clever title fulfillment. I want the songs to all be about love lost and dying of thirst inside, and rhyme "spell" with "well". Banging Betty - Good story, good feel, good job. Berkeley Social Scene - Has a nice feel and all that but lyrics/phrasin...

My masterpiece, too late for the fight.

Re: Dear Jury: Vote not guilty; I'll pay you! /Acquitted Reviews

I'm not sure where to put this, but I remixed Elaine's track. I can't resist messing with it when someone sends in an a cappella. Will take that under advisement. :D Too funny. I had half the fight reviewed, then a week or two went by and flattened me in the process. Watch this space for the ...
