Re: Drifting along with the tumblin' (Tumbleweed Reviews)

p.s. So tell me about all your switches mid-review between second and third person. Is this something you routinely do with your reviews of male musicians' songs too? Just curious ;) There's definitely unconscious bias there, no doubt, thank you for calling my attention to it in such a polite manne...

Re: Drifting along with the tumblin' (Tumbleweed Reviews)

The John Benjamin Band This song is about how everything affects everything else, even after death or breath, because y'know, like, a tumbleweed spreads its seeds as it rolls. So in a way, it's actually only AFTER death that it can ensure the extension of itself. Uh, so that's that I guess. I like ...

Re: Tumbleweed

TUMBLEWEED by The JBB VERSE Happiness and love and discotheques None of these our science detects But this is what the state of the art reflects: Life on Earth has lasting effects CHORUS The living dead are all aware They’re rolling like a tumbleweed Even my last breath of air Is rolling like a tumb...

Thanks for letting me babble, fellas, and editing it so I don’t sound like the babbling fool that I am. Well, not as much as usual anyway.

It turned out swell and I had a great time. Your podcasting skills are on point.

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

At that price point though... send that shit back if it's defective for sure. I mean either way the Dual Rec has independent master volume controls for every channel, that’s one of the things it was known for, as not every amp had that back when it came out. Without actually futzing with the amp it’...

I don't get the "linen, silk and leather" part.
eh, it’s a contortion of “sticking through” to move from Porcupine Solidarity to their to spines piercing various materials.

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

It's true the Muff acts as a boost, but it definitely dirties the tone further as well. It goes from "That's a growly sound" to "Things are getting serious now".

That doesn’t even seem physically possible if the drums aren’t miked. Wonder if there is a world record for loudest unamplified drum set performance.

Re: Don't get pricked on all of the (Porcupine Reviews)

And here I thought I had successfully drafted that criticism to describe what a listener might think about that line when they hear it rather than what you yourself were thinking when you wrote it. Guess I failed there.

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

I'm no expert but that seems like an odd pedal order to me. Personally I prefer tuner->volume/wah->gain/overdrive/fuzz/etc.->boost (optional)->time-based effects. Also it's interesting to me that you're using an amp simulator pedal into an amp. I'm curious to see what exactly you're doing with the ...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

The Big Muff has a massive mid scoop that can make it drop out of a mix, even if the level is up high, so even Gilmour and whatever would put a color boost after the Muff to EQ it to sound good. Yes, that's what happens if I have it earlier in the chain. After the drive, though, the midscoop is com...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

I can’t say I’m super knowledgeable about where to put the pedals. My Youtube research indicates that delay before gain wasn’t unheard of and it made sense to me because at the time the Joyo was last before the amp. Basically it was my preamp, so a I was hesitant to have fx after it. Only recently h...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Yeah Anderton videos got tiresome and too self-involved and i don’t like Dorje (Chappers’s band) at allllll. I have tried a lot of things to get what I want for MÀG shows. It’s basically similar to a Blink 183 or Weezer tone as the goals. Here’s what I’ve landed on, currently, as my pedal chain from...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

A 15 watt tube amp *is* plenty, though I don't think anybody makes a 15w solid state amp with a decent speaker. The money's just not there-- I think if they did, we might discover that 15w is enough for solid state too. If you know of an apples-to-apples comparison of some 15w solid state amp to a V...

Re: Don't get pricked on all of the (Porcupine Reviews)

Balance Lost Digging the atmospheric synths Lyrics are a little on the nose for my taste I like the rhythm when the guitar comes in. Very XTC. Porcupines do stink more than usual when they're stressed, but that's not a super well-known feature of the creature-- I spent the week reading about porcup...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Yeah I’ve never, in my admittedly limited but not zero experience, seen anybody who tried to distort a power amp. I mean, to what end? Especially today. I see a lot of guitarists in our DC scene with amps that they will never play louder than 2. Ever. Just obscenely massive wattage even tube—anythin...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Actually I think it is key to have a speaker that is rated for a higher wattage than your power amp can produce. That way you never blow your speaker.

(P.S. I'm certain there are aspects of the relationship between pre-amp and power-amp that I have stated incorrectly. Looking forward to more experienced heads chiming in.)

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

Okay, so basically gain is on the pre-amp and volume is on the power-amp, and in a perfect signal chain they'd be equivalent, but amps aren't perfect so you get different sorts of overdrive and clipping based on which signal is being cranked up. Good to know! Yes. And unlike the pre-amp, which we o...

Re: The Guitar Doctor Is In

I have a Fender combo (Princeton 112+ from the 90’s), and my understanding is that the volume potentiometer is a “reverse logarithmic” type. That means most of the volume comes really low on the dial and as someone pointed out the rest is just gain. The signal to both preamp and power amp are contro...
