Boltoph Would have been a contender if I didn't already know what was to come. I don't get it...what is to come? Apologies for any confusion. What I meant to say in my addled state, was that I had already listened to the other entries and so knew what was to come in the fight. And what a top qualit...

And now the vote from the Balham jury... The Big Smokes (us) Contrary to popular views the majority of this song is based on truth. It's interesting to hear people's views about Sarah's wonderful voice against more mellow backing. Next time I'll stick the pin in  Boltoph I wish I knew what a '...

Courage words by Andy Balham music by The Big Smokes Saw you first at a secondhand meeting Leaving with somebody else Saw you next, but it was only fleeting Never thought I'd see you again Bridge Now the brave get favoured by fortune And carpe diem is uttered by some They don't see the downside And...

The Big Smokes (sans J$) will be in for Courage this week. Be warned, it's not the cheeriest of tunes.

J$ has been tasked with kicking you in the nuts every time he sees you until things sound better. Better to whom? ME! Duh. And how would I know what sounds better to you? And why would I care? But, for the sake of experimentation, my next solo song will feature diatonic chords, simple drums and a r...

i'd be curious to hear you do a song with just straight notes on the bass, guitar, and vocal line. Now we're getting somewhere. I just might try that. J$ has been tasked with kicking you in the nuts every time he sees you until things sound better. Better to whom? He's like a hitman - for nuts. You...

Part III of III... Andy Balham Thanks to J$ for the lyrics. I struggled to find the tempo for this and that may be what doesn't sit right for me. I like bits and pieces of it, but the overall feeling is too leaden. Still, got to use the phrase 'dogging'. Baron Von Smith Nice 80's feel going on. This...

verb! Just checking what usage, as the vocal is certainly a little lacking in the tune department and you may have been trying to remind me that songs usually have a tune. i may be crazy, but it sounded like your voice, guitar, and/or bass were all playing in different tunings. You may be crazy, yo...

Part II of III ... The Hell Yeahs As ever the music and voice go so well together and there is an interesting story underpinning the song. It sounds like you went direct-in to the board, and slapped a reverb on it, rather than trying to get some of the room sound by mic'ing an amp.

Well that show me I should probably always use my Pod XT and Ampworks bass. It was an interesting experiment though.

Part I of III reviews, nice to be back... Motor Monkeys The music is immaculately put together and the riffs are good and fat, but you need a little heart in there. The lyrics on the middle eight, however, are top notch (any rhyme of toque and rock is good by me). Noise Brigade You have the ability ...

Re: All time top ten songs

Heaven - Talking Heads Simply Red has an awesome cover of that song. Until recently, I thought it was a Simply Red song. Please. Please. Do not mention that version. That said I got to love Gimme Shelter and Ziggy Stardust though covers (The Sisters Of Mercy and Bauhaus respectively - forgive me I ...

Re: All time top ten songs

I should mention that, as when making compilations or playing DJ for people, you shouldn't have more than one song per artiste. :) i agree! i go so far as to exclude anything from a side project or solo project if it comes up. Yup. It's tough, but fair. I look forward to being pointed towards some ...

All time top ten songs

I've often referred to songs as being in my all time top ten, but only this evening have I tried to actually assemble such a thing. Here they are in no particular order and will be subject to editing as I think it through a little more: Holiday In Cambodia - The Dead Kennedys Jolene - Dolly Parton L...
