Elks: You get 'On Horseback' by Mike Oldfield. It's complicated how we ended up there, but congratulations.
Thank you so much for these, they are delightful.
Ironically I just picked up a vinyl of Tubular Bells at a yard sale the other month hahaha

I'm just going to say again that I really dug Elks this week, it sounded like it was lifted from our preferred gardening radio show - Ports of Paradise
I think it’s more like that little indie lizard lounge, the song they play when they want you to order more drinks

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Six "Summer Robot"

Be happy to talk chords in this style sometime, but check out the chart for Girl from Ipanema sometime, that’s pretty much The Godfather of this, even though we only used the typical m6 once, the other things really are just versions of that for most of the verses

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Six "Summer Robot"

Some quick hits before I jump in a car to drive back home: Alleviators: Great concept, super fun, great execution as usual. I did think that it felt like it was setting up a story, so that it was the first song of a concept album, and as a result, I wanted to hear the completion of the story--like t...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Five "Novel"

Thanks all; and congrats to everyone else who came through; looking the scores it looked like it was all pretty tightly contested. A lot of appreciation to Cavedwellers, Lunkhead, and The Lowest Bitter, all of whom had good songs; I especially liked TLB’s sample use but also I drink a lot of G&T...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Five "Novel"

Thoughts during lunchtime: The Alleviators - Full of mood, great pace, plenty of space in the mix. All of Beka's vocal performances have been really good, and this one is no exception. When it goes big, it goes real big, great decision. I wonder if it would've been nice to have it get big earlier so...

Re: Nur Ein XVII Round Five - Novel

Elks of the Economy Samples: typewriter, fountain pen writing, paper sounds, book dropped on table (multiple), espresso machine, drinking espresso, dog drinking water, and owl hooting. All of these are used naturally in the song as sonic elements, and outside of the owl hoots, one of the book drops,...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Five "Novel"

I sacrificed myself to so much espresso drinking for this; I hope you’re all happy

Also we have typewriter samples, and owl hooting samples that were made into synth instruments. Another synth instrument was made from the book drops and fountain pen scratching samples

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Four "June Moon"

not to get too deep into a bunch of gibberish but the strongest sounding notes to sing on a particular chord will be chord tones (ie notes that are in that chord), which doesn't mean don't sing other notes, but as a very general rule, you'll find singing chord tones on strong beats will sound better...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Five "Novel"

Clarification requested: we are allowed to manipulate, edit, and effect the samples we take in any way we like? If the samples are manipulated enough not to be recognizable as the original sound anymore, is that acceptable to all, some, or none of the judges?

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Three "Can't Let It Go"

Bunch of random-ish thoughts after having listened to the songs a bunch of times. I appreciate all the work and energy that everyone puts into their songs, the reviewing, the judging. Every single one of those is a thankless task that doesn't deserve vitriol. Well ok, maybe a little vitriol. Just a ...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Three "Can't Let It Go"

BSS : Umm, okaaay. So, this is an interesting choice of subject matter for the lyric. I admit my interest was piqued, however I'm not sure it works as far as a lyric goes. Before I looked into it I was like "wtf are they singing about?" and then when I realised I still didn't feel any kin...

Re: Nur Ein XVII Round Three - Can't Let It Go

Jeff Fal provided a harmony vocal for the prechorus, a unison vocal in the final chorus as well as a countermelody that has a harmony in that final chorus. Mark W provided 3 part harmonies of oohs and aahs in all choruses. Don't look at the metadata Holding on to hope Frayed threads of a heavy rope...

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Three "Can't Let It Go"

Elks guest harmonies will be listed in the lyrics, but if you're familiar with it, you will recognize Jeff Fal's distinctive stylings, as well as stellar BV harmonies provided by Mark Wengelewski, of the 80s hair metal band Wenger. Oh wait, that's not a thing

Re: Nur Ein XVII: Round Three "Can't Let It Go"

I understand that I'm a degenerate, but man I wish there was a book for Nur Ein so we could bet round winners, etc. Not for actual money, because money ruins everything, but like, it's fun to bet on things. Now if only the Celtics would win two in a row.
