Re: New Video Camera

I've been using a Canon 80D to shoot almost all my video for the past five years. I use a 50mm prime to photograph artwork, but the lens I use most for video is a little flat pancake 24mm lens . It's great. My current lighting situation is incredibly poor, but even pushing the camera much harder th...

Re: New Video Camera

Budget? That’s the biggest factor. I’m probably the most overkill here, in that I use a Canon 5D III with a 16-35 2.8L as my “webcam.” A used dslr that’s just modern enough to be able to live monitor in that way (my 5D II can’t, for example) is a good way to go. Something in canon’s rebel or double ...

Re: SF Live! Online Edition 2022

My studio setup should be functional if not complete by then, so I can probably do some presenting etc. I think the night jb and I hosted went alright.

Re: SpinTunes 19 Round 4 'What Was That Noise?' Challenge, reviews and comments

Another SpinTunes done, and likely the last music I ever write in Texas. See-Man-Ski - Super Natural Way : The boopy farfisa or whatever organ is fun, and your understated approach with it is tasty and generally perfect. Good sense of space. Have you ever tried putting like a 3% swing on your drums?...

I was wondering how you got away with that part, but when I quoted it I saw what you did. That's a good hack. Sober, you can also work around by putting an empty tag (e.g. ) inside the word after the semicolon.
This is awesome to know!

500 Internal Server Error triggered by specific text string

I posted this in discord, but I'll post it here and clean up the discord mess. When posting a long set of reviews, I kept getting the 500 Internal Server Error whenever I'd hit preview or submit. By trial and error, I trimmed down the post to find that a text string that consistently gives the error...

Re: SpinTunes 19 Round 3 'Let's Circle Back to That' Challenge, reviews and comments

Unfortunately I didn't get to these reviews until after results were in. I still feel the exercise is worthwhile for me, though. Also In Blue - Howling at the Moon : As fun as it is, and as good as it feels to have that leslie spinning right up front and hard panned, it's good to put a bit of room t...

Re: SpinTunes 19 Round 3 'Let's Circle Back to That' Challenge, reviews and comments

Thanks for writing reviews, seemanski! [...] At first I thought this song was about recovering from addiction. I saw the six month chip as being the chip you get when you have abstained for six months from something. I'm guessing it is more in reference to going on tour at war. [...] You're right on...

Re: Songfight Live 2022 IRL Interest Poll

I'm interested in a live show because putting my dumb videos together is a ton of effort. On the other hand, a live show strips me of all of my post-production tricks that make me sound less like shit. A real conundrum.

Bummed we get no With Joe or Fluke Wilson this week. That's ok though, as we have a lovely batch of songs here. *** Melody Klein - Etude No. 15 - Virtual : Seems like you're often right on the threshold of whatever gate you're using or is built into the vocoder. Not sure if it adds or is distracting...

(Thank you crumpet for the template) My notes. I'm trying to find a balance between "old-school Songfight mean" and "Spintunes nice." *** Just - Melody Klein : Fun groove right away. I love that there is attention to detail, in that every note/hit has a different enough velocity ...

Re: Community Check-In and Feedback

Does the IRC still exist? Anyway, yeah I think the discord is great for bullshittery that doesn't need to be preserved in any way. I don't think anyone has ever used the voice chat except maybe sometime around songfight live. Maybe I'll start to idle it. I get that slack is useful for folks who want...

Re: Community Check-In and Feedback

I have problems doing reviews too. I'm not a technical person when it comes to instrumentation and I feel like all I have to say is either "I like how this sounds" or "I don't like how this sounds" or "This sounds like INSERT BAND HERE". And yeah, for some of the long ...

Re: Community Check-In and Feedback

I’ll write them, but I can’t give any production tips since I have a tin ear. I try to leave my personal musical bias out of it or honestly I’d be discounting some otherwise decently constructed and executed music. As far as being able to talk about what I’m hearing, I can really only speak to the ...

Re: Community Check-In and Feedback

Yeah, it's reviews for me. I admit that I almost never review a fight that I'm not in, but I review 100% of the time I'm in. I've griped about this a lot, but getting better at songwriting and production is basically the whole point of songfight for me. And reviewing (and getting reviews) is a huge ...
