Re: Song Fight! Turns 20

People can already enter with as many band names as they want, and the workarounds that have been used are just because there's no way to tell things apart otherwise, both in the software and by the humans using it.

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20

There's no rule against multiple entries per person. Just a suggestion that you focus on making one good entry instead of three crappy ones.

Re: The MP3 Effect

8” disks were floppy disks because they were, well, very floppy, being a semi-rigid casing around a mylar disc. 5.25” disks were compact versions of 8” disks and were still a semi-rigid casing around a mylar disc. 3.5” disks were a harder case but the disc inside was still mylar and floppy. When mp3...

Re: The MP3 Effect

Vinyl is something that has turned into a niche fringe geek thing, even though it may sound better. I don't wonder that analog camera technology is the same. Vinyl doesn't sound "better" in any objective sense, but it's a very different experience of active listening which is very easy to...

Re: The MP3 Effect

IMO, if you're listening hard enough to your music to tell the difference between high-bitrate mp3 and FLAC etc., you're paying too much attention to the minutiae and not actually enjoying the music. 128kbps CBR mp3 sounds like ass and can really take me out of the thing but like, as long as I'm not...

Re: Song Fight! Turns 20

How are we counting fight #1000? Are we including the special one-off private challenges and retroactively-inserted shitposts? What about fights that only existed at the earliest live shows?

Re: Least-shitty distribution and manufacturing channels

Funny thing is my opinion on CDBaby had changed somewhat since they've restructured their pricing to actually be pretty okay these days. But wow I didn't realize they were taking that big of a cut, jeeze.

I have been thinking about a couple of songfight related things:
1. Bring back instant band
2. Organize a cover fight
I would be extremely into both of these things. I've missed instant band especially.

Re: Happy 2024! Got any plans, goals, etc.?

I don't do resolutions, I just have things I'd like to go better next time around. It looks like my 2023 goals were: Work on VRChat stuff: YES, I made my own avatar from scratch Work on games: NO Work on music: SORTA, I did some game jam music and started a meditation podcast but I didn't do nearly ...

It's not breaking any rules but uh. You should probably reconsider this whole idea.

Re: No key to the handcuffs so (I Won't Let You Go reviews)

Just the other day I was telling someone how I always liked DH's singing vocals on MYCC and Duboce Triangle better than his more famous persona, and then I find out that he did exactly that and won with it. Heck yeah, welcome back to Song Fight!, please continue to be awesome.

Re: Halloween 2023

As usual I was very lazy so I set up a video projector in my car port and showed old-ass halloween cartoons and put out a bowl of candy as a free-for-all. Only a couple kids came by and took candy and of course they took all the best stuff. Earlier today my weird neighbor asked me about it and I off...

Re: Bandcamp's implosion and some alternatives

Yeah my point was about what happens to the streaming landscape after Spotify's upcoming payments-threshold change. I mostly have my stuff on Spotify and Apple Music because it doesn't cost any more than getting it on iTunes/YouTube/etc., and occasionally it's useful to be able to send a Spotify lin...

Re: Bandcamp's implosion and some alternatives

The things that bother me about that line of thinking: The AI/spam/fraud crap works because it gets a lot of listens to begin with (and meets the threshold) It leads to a conceptual chicken-and-egg situation where indie musicians have no reason to put their stuff on streaming since they won't get pa...

Re: Bandcamp's implosion and some alternatives

I mean, insofar as the services for getting your stuff on the mainstream streaming services go, they're all pretty much equivalent these days. I didn't have a good experience with amuse.io, pricing varies somewhat between the others, it's all just a pick-your-poison sort of thing at this point. Pers...

Re: Bandcamp's implosion and some alternatives

Even if they really did have no knowledge of who was a union organizer or not (which sounds fake to me), making such a major decision without working with the union is also incredibly bad-faith, and possibly illegal. The point to a union is to have collective bargaining and the union was completely ...

Re: Bandcamp's implosion and some alternatives

And, like I've said a few times, I *hope* Bandcamp continues to be a good platform, because it still has a lot of stuff going for it that no other platform does. But I'm skeptical, and it's good to have a backup in place so it isn't a gigantic crisis if/when something does happen. Songtradr has aspi...

Re: Bandcamp's implosion and some alternatives

I get the impression that Epic *wanted* to make changes but their hands were tied by the union and they didn't quite know what to do with them. The first thing Songtradr did was destroy the union. You don't lay off half the fucking company if you don't intend it to change at all. Regardless, it fuck...

Re: Bandcamp's implosion and some alternatives

To be clear, bandcamp is still worth releasing your albums on. It's just a good idea to have a backup as well. CDBaby's streaming stuff was pretty awful for a while but they've redone their pricing to actually be competitive. I think there's still better deals out there though. Personally I still us...
